I have been told I should have diagnosed with autism but aged out of the foster care system before getting an official diagnosis. I honestly do not believe I have any symptoms. Honestly, I think it's over diagnosed to some degree (the foster care system is very well known for that). I was diagnosed with so much already and yet, I am very normal functioning and tend to stay to the social background until problems arise (and then I take control; I am a straightforward and practical leader).

Welp, according to a lot of people, being anti social and obsessing over certain things are some traits of autism. I have a cousin who has it, and he fits these traits. I /used/ to be anti social, but I still have a rather high obsession over aviation . I wouldn't call it autistic though :P.

I was always very quiet and reserved, and while other people were concerned about it, I never even took a moment to think about it until ninth grade.  I wasn't aware of any problem, but I suppose others thought there was.  In fact, at one point during elementary school, my mom forced me to call one of two people twice a week to hang out with them in order to solve the problem.  That didn't prove to be effective at all, and just lowered my opinion of my mom.

My younger sister, who's studying clinical psychology, suspects that I fall somewhere on the mild end of the autistic spectrum, but I don't think I'm autistic or have Asperger's.  More to the point, if I found out I do, it wouldn't change how I live my life.

Diagnosed for autism when I was 8, came back negative.

The closest to a form of autism I come to is that I'm an introvert and I have a hard time sharing a conversation with my dad sometimes, but that's really it. I'm not the most social person, but if I hear something interesting, I'll try to join in a conversation with anyone at the right opportunity. I could talk for 30-60 minutes at a time about a few different things. Unless I'm preoccupied or I'm angry, I like conversations! It's just there's hardly a time and place for them.

So, no, I'm not autistic.

As for asperger's, the only traits I share are a lack of empathy (I can read people's emotions fairly well, I just don't like getting involved) and (somewhat) obsessive interests. I've learned (and still learning) to level out my obsessions so they're not on the top of my mind.

Wait a sec, isn't it impossible for people with Aspberger's to associate with forum usernames?

Luckily, I don't have any Autism spectrum disorders. My brother does though. He's awesome. I miss him. He lives about 400 miles from me and I see him maybe twice a year.  :(

Actually though I don't often mention it I AM autistic

I cannot say it is mild or severe but more of in the middle...

now I have to say my autism honestly gets in the way of my life (could even make a list of reasons)

though I am VERY social I do sometimes come onto the shy side and people have a hard time understanding that

people see autistic people as dumb and....other stuff well my thoughts on this? well simple we are NOT dumb, cruel, heartless or anything you can spit out we are normal people...

speech can be a real pain to me...looking for words...not to say anything wrong...

and many other reasons....

I have IN FACT also got dyspraxia <- or however you spell it which also does not help...

Just because someone is autistic does NOT mean they are dumb or any other negative flaws.

note: I am honestly sorry if I am acting a little on the...strange side or not myself I am both tired and I seem to be having a hard time in life...

Yes, I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome as a child, and now that it's lumped in with autism as of the DSM-V, I just have autism. It's fine though, despite the idiots who fling the term around like it's an insult, it doesn't really affect me by now, since I've learned to cope with most of the symptoms. The only ones I don't really have "under control" are being able to continually keep eye-contact and the "repetitive body movements", specifically, when I'm sitting down, my leg just starts to bounce rhythmically, I can't really keep it still, but it's not anything really problematic, and based on the fact that autism is more of a hardware issue than a software one (neurological pathways as opposed to neurochemistry), it's probably a nervous tic, and something I really can't control, but it's not like I'm hitting myself or anything, so I can just deal with it.

It has never been clear to me what precisely is the difference between having poor interpersonal skills and suffering from mild autism.  As someone with some pretty awful interpersonal skills who tends to be a downright eccentric nerd, it has been suggested more than once that I might suffer from the condition, but with such a vague description and no apparent course of action for correcting it beyond what I would do to improve my impersonal skills the whole concept has struck me as largely irrelevant.  One of the posters suggested suffering from sensory overload, that actually sounds like a specific problem, but most of the details that are relayed to me about autism are far vaguer than that.

The reasons someone can suffer from poor interpersonal skills are quite varied but to many on the Autism spectrum is due to how their brains are wired. The parts of the brain that interpret social rules, norms and cues don't function properly and someone with Autism needs to be in essence trained to learn these things much like how most people need to be trained and taught how to learn a completely different language which can be extremely difficult.

Sensory overload is also a common problem due to a difference in wiring in an Autistic brain, lets say the earth is a tv with the volume set to medium lets say 25 but can fluctuate and go higher in certain circumstances. Because of these sensory issues to many on the Autism spectrum it can be like this TV is set to 50 or even higher. Most people don't even think about but we all take in a lot of sensory information every single day and most people have a filter but with a broken filter certain situations can seem like multiple people are yelling in your ear at once nonstop. Luckily much of this can be reigned in through auditory or other sensory integration training but in most cases there is still a certain sensitivity which can vary depending on the individual.

Yes, I have high functioning aspergers. No one would know unless I told them, and I usually keep that bit of information to myself. My writing is terrible, but most people use computers for most things nowadays, so who cares? I can handwrite my signature, and that's really all I need. I suppose I can be a bit of a Fluttershy type around big groups of people, and I tend to like to keep a small but close knit group of friends. Technically though, everyone's my friend unless I have a reason not to be friends with them, though that really just amounts to a lot of acquaintances I only really interact with regularly at work, church or anywhere else I tend to frequent, while I only regularly interact with a small handful of people outside of those settings. I hate modern social media like Facebook, because it creates social obligations, while AI prefer to manage social interactions on my own terms. Otherwise, I function just like anyone else, aside from my relatively recent and strange obsession with colourful ponies.;)

Nope I don't and judging by the thread, this definitely proves all of the haters wrong. Not ALL bronies have autism, just half :squee:

And btw there's nothing wrong with having autism it's just a stupid insult people throw around on the internet and is more or less an ad hominem attack against things people don't like ("oh you watch MLP? Must be autistic har har har"). Interacting with you guys I would have never suspected it anyway.

Tried out an online quiz that says it is very likely I have autism. I have been asked if I had asperger because a lot of it fit. When I was a child I was checked for autism and I wasn't diagnosed with it but a lot of things I do and how I feel would be considered signs of having autism. Not to mention I was so young but I think if I would go to someone they would diagnose me with asperger's syndrom.

So it is likely I have asperger's syndrome. Which is fine by me as it doesn't really impact my life that much other then how I may do some things differently then others.
