gaming PC Gaming has been sorta lame since Steam came out

A Black Circle

As I said in a post in another thread:

Remember the days of Daggerfall, Doom, and Deus Ex?

Back when PC Gaming had an identity, a personality, a reason to exist?

Since Steam released, I'm a console gamer.

Back then, it was a tough decision.

Do you care to provide any evidence or even a line of reasoning saying why PC gaming was stripped of its identity because of Gabe Newell?

Switching platforms solely because of the implementation and use of a social game delivery system is like saying you won't buy a car because of Henry Ford. If that is honestly how you feel, and you are not just trying to be witty and edgy, I would like to hear you elaborate. Also, an inanimate object or concept only has the personality given to it by it's users. As a Steam user, I think the community has a fine identity.

This is clearly a troll. Gabe Newell is one of the reasons PC gaming is becoming more popular, not the opposite. If you are actually serious I would love to hear your reasoning behind it. I'm sure it would make sense.

Steam is not Facebook. I have people in my school say that. Yes you can friend and upload pics...but it's just of games. With out Gabe PC multilayer might suck.

I don't really have an input. Because before Gabe Newell, I was playing things like:

So... I couldn't say how pre-Newell games were like..

What did Gabe do to damage PC gaming? It seems to fine to me, difference is we have services like GOG and Steam where games are more accessible and have really good deals. It's not perfect, Steam could use some quality control and a good refund system but other than that it's pretty good.

First of all, the PCMASTERRACE Stuff is REALLY annoying.

And all of the really fun PC games just stopped around 2004.

And, for me personally, as a singleplayer gamer, Steam caused good singleplayer games to stop being made.

I don't like multiplayer, which may be the reason I feel this way, Idunno.

Maybe it's just sheer coincidence?

Before Gabe Newell I was plaiyng Putt Putt Goes to the Moon and Spyfox, so maybe I don't have a good frame of reference. However, PC gaming is still great. I don't care about the console wars or whatever, but claiming that PC sucks because of our lord and savior, Gaben, is kinda dumb.

I mean honestly, outside of console exclusives and Nintendo most platforms have the same games anyway.

That would be PC Gaming fanbase and for the most part it's a joke. Though I will say the condescending attitude towards console gamers is annoying as people buy consoles as a cheaper alternative to a good gaming rig.

That argument is invalid as what classifies as a "good game" is entirely subjective. There are plenty of single player games released after 2004 that I find are really good. To name a few: Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Outlast, Amnesia The Dark Descent and Wolfenstein The New Order.

That's not Gabe's fault. That's the Post-CoD AAA game industry's cynical mindset that "single player games don't sell anymore! CoD's sales prove that gamers don't want them,"

That's good but it's nice to have access to the game long after it gets taken off shelves. Plus now you can re-download the games or put them on some USB device and transfer it to another computer and not have to worry about disc decay.

First of all, the PCMASTERRACE Stuff is REALLY annoying.

Then it's doing EXACTLY as intended. "PC master race" is a joke meant to annoy console fanboys.

Subjective.

Call of Duty is responsible for this, not Valve. Funnily enough, CoD is one of the most popular franchises for consoles.

...then buy physical copies of games? There's nothing stopping you from not going digital on the PC, aside from easier library management, cheaper prices, no need to keep track of software license keys and not relying on antiquated media for games.

You have not come up with one good reason why Gabe Newell or Valve have "ruined" PC gaming, and instead you make up reasons, try presenting opinion as fact and even pin the blame for some things on Valve when something entirely different is responsible. If you're just gonna be edgy and say "PC gaming sucks because of Valve!" without providing any legitimate reasons why, then you should just stop.

That really wasn't Steam's fault, mate. Instead of aiming for Single Player story and replay value, gaming companies have found that MP is more profitable. Even good single player games ruin themselves to touch into the MP a little bit. Bioshock was great, Infinite was good, too, but Bioshock 2? Hated it. They spent too much time and too many resources on the garbage MP.

Assassin's Creed did an "okay" job of implementing a multiplayer mode, but I'm more excited about the co-op in Unity than I ever was for the PvP matchmaking. Even so, I'd prefer they forgo both forms of multiplayer if they can make the story better, longer, faster. They have the technology. They can rebuild it!

At least it's nice to see some SP games heading back in the story-telling direction and away from competitive multiplayer...

Putt Putt games were AWESOME. :U

I'm not being sarcastic. That little purple car will always have a special place in my heart.

There is definitely a rise in condescending attitudes, but it's not just from PC gamers, either. Why must gamers fight over something so trivial? Ugh.

If anything, I would blame the success of consoles for the downfall of PC gaming. Console games has been vastly outselling PC since... forever, especially in recent years. There's still some big PC exclusive franchises, like Civilization, but aside from strategy games there's little reason to make a PC exclusive game anymore. Even MMO's are branching out to consoles

And speaking of single player games, steam has been a great platform for indie game developers to sell their games and get noticed. Some of the best single player games I've played in recent years has been indie games I bought through steam. Binding of Isaac, FTL: Faster Than Light, Super Meat Boy, Legend of Grimrock, Risk of Rain ect. It's taken a long time for consoles to start catching up on this

Consoles are actually more common than PCs in only a few countries, namely the United States, Canada and UK. Globally, PC has the majority market share at 51%.

PC gaming isn't in danger, it is the danger.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmnaaaaahhhhhhhhh, PC Gaming is still wonderful... Sure, DOOM and the others were great, but you can still get them on Steam and other places, Hell I JUST beat The Ultimate DOOM this weekend on Steam... But what did Gabe Newell do? Nothing... he founded a company that made games easier to access and play, not to mention the company that made Half-Life, Team Fortress (Even though TF2 suuuuuccckkkksssss, TFC is so much better), Portal (Which is, IMO, one of the best single player games ever). Not to mention Minecraft was PC first before going to consoles to please others, and the console versions suck... majority... and don't forget what makes the games? PCs... And I'd rather not pay for freaking online play... Steam is free to use, which makes it so much better...

I was always under the impression that Steam gave quite a name for computer gaming.

But anyway, a lot of the time I just think it's nostalgia for the older games we once enjoyed.

But really, those were the kind of things that were new for its time. The only thing I can think of is that nowadays there's not much individuality between a lot of these more modern games.

Personally, I think PC gaming has gotten better ever since Steam.

Steam was innovative for being able to update games to fix glitches and stuff by using internet.

Pretty, innovative if you ask me.

Also, the only reason I joined PC is because I was sick of how strict consoles were as well the loss of innovation. (Remember, PC is open-source.)

A lot of good PC games have come out since the release of Steam.  Just to name a few

Civilization V - The best civilization yet

Deus Ex Human Revolution - This is a worthy successor to the original

Bioshock Infinite

Magicka

Dawn of War II

X-Com Enemy Unknown

Dishonored

StarDrive

All really excellent games that are worth your time.  The PC game library is almost incomprehensibly vast at this point, with a virtually endless range of titles.  The only really trick is finding the ones you personally like.

The point of suggestions is to tell you about things you might never have heard of, so I don't know why you mention it like it's proving your point about the alleged decline in quality of PC games. Also, just because the game is on a console, doesn't necessarily mean it's a better gaming experience on a console. It might be more fun to play the PC version.

I do like Civ 4, though. :)

PS - If they ever release Fable 2 on PC, that'll remove one of the major remaining reasons I consider console gaming personally necessary.

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!
