Why do people ship Spike with Rarity?

This is my opinion don't judge me if i'm way off

 

Because in that one episode where spike and rarity are falling to their death spike admits he likes her, but she already knew that and started to cry. they lived, and ever since then she liked spike more.

That is actually my favorite scene in the entire series, however I have a different interpretation of it. Rarity does know Spike has a crush on him, but stops him and just lets him have that moment because in her eyes they are about to die.

It was one of my favorite parts too! Not gonna lie I watched that part like five times. Way better said then mine.

Well, he does have a canonical crush on her...

But one new ship I've seen lately is Spike and Sweetie Belle, which I guess makes more sense age-wise. But fans have the power to ship any two characters with each other, no matter how odd it seems.

I saw that ship not too long ago in a fanfic called "The Sweetest Gem", tis actually a rather nice one.

 

 

 

I can't really add more to the discussion as to why, but I can say I don't like it so much, I just find it rather strange and can't really see it being plausible other than the one sided crush that it is.

As most of the others have said, it is canon that Spike has had a crush on Rarity since he 1st laid eyes on her.  IMO, she does care for him (possibly very much), but it is more as a little brother & close friend than romantically.

 

As to the popularity, I agree w a great many others.  Most people have had an unrequited crush & can relate to Spike's feelings.

There's never one blanket reason different people would support a ship. The best I can guess with this one is that it's one of the few instances of legit, consitent crushing on the show (the only other one I can think of is FlashLight, and that's been almost entirely set in EQG) and there's been a few episodes and an IDW comic book arc that heavily features that pairing. So there's a decent amount of canon material to work with, instead of it being completely based on head canon and wishful thinking.

 

Personally, I do very much ship them, but only when Spike is older and slightly more mature, so I can't speak for people who ship it with Kid/Possibly-Young-Teenager-But-Heck-If-We-Know Spike.

People will ship characters based on what they have seen in the show, but not all of them are agreeable. Spike + Rarity can potentially happen if Spike gets older, but currently yes, there is a huge age difference and it doesn't exactly work right now. Other examples include Rainbow Dash + Soarin, just because these 2 have talked to each other more than once for 5 minutes doesn't automatically make them compatible. Then there is the Fluttershy + Discord, which only theories can be made as to why/how they were shipped. And finally, Celestia + Discord. A parade of shipping theories rocketed out after seeing the last 5 minutes of the Season 4 finale, when Discord handed Celestia a bouquet of flowers as an apology and she blushed from it.

The answer is surprisingly more simple than a lot of folks are making it out to be - Sparity is canon, as in its official in the show's story and character backgrounds.

 

Now why is this itself  so significant? Well aside from establishing a foundation of continuity and hard facts for fans to follow and obsess over, being canon often also means you get a lot of background and flavor from the show. And there's plenty going on with Sparity in the show, believe me.   

 

Moreover, despite the fact that we are to understand that Spike is a mere "baby" dragon, as Twilight with her dragon expertise asserts  , he's shown to be far more mentally mature and intellectual, even moreso perhaps than other characters older than him. Besides that relationships with age gaps have been around since the dawn of time, notably here Mrs. Robinson and Summer of '42. 

 

There's many flavors in the world and Sparity is just 1 of many examples.

I must admit I've never liked the Spike and Rarity ship. I've always felt it to be wrong  . But I don't mind others enjoying it

Because Spike's crush on Rarity is canon, and some people think it's cute. I always found it kind of gross since the show treats Rarity as an adult and Spike as a child, but whatever.

Because it's canon and "official". Though they are completely two different creatures/races/animals/insert whatever term you want to, the show suggests/hints that Spike has a thing for Rarity and the community/fans seem to support it. Another reason is they can see themselves in the shoes of Spike, meaning they also have a crush on someone and they visualize that someone as Rarity. So for that reason, they support that shipping. 

 

I don't support any shipping in MLP but IMO, there's a very little chance that Rarity has also the same feeling as Spike...

The first time Spike meets Rarity, his irises turn into love hearts. Later in the same episode, on the way to meet Fluttershy for the first time, Spike swoons "wasn't she wonderful?". In A Dog and Pony Show, he fantasizes about being Rarity's knight in shining armour. In Green Isn't Your Colour he wears a t-shirt with a picture of Rarity and a heart on it, and later tells Twilight and Pinkie (exact words) "I have a crush on Rarity".

Maybe, or maybe not! We can't know for sure.

Maybe that if Sparity had never existed in the show, instead there would have been a very popular Spike x Fluttershy ship (for example) in the fandom, who knows?

Why do people ship Spike and Rarity? Isn't that akin to shipping a ten year old with a twenty year old? It's kind of messed up when you think about it

I think it's been well established within the show that Spike isn't ten. Anyway, I don't ship Spike with Rarity. I prefer SpikeBelle. SpikeBelle forever!
