Since everyone's predicting that the Cutie Mark Magic theme of season 5 will involve the CMC getting their cutie marks at some point, which I can't necessarily blame anyone for thinking that, with a season 5 synopsis like this:

"Season 5 will really delve more into how the magic of cutie marks and friendship can impact those around you," teases Hasbro Studios Executive Director, Brian Lenard.

 

 I'm just going to say that is the CMC do get their marks and it effects the friendships of those around them (coughtheotherCMCcough), there will likely be a falling out. Why? It's been foreshadowed. Anyone remember waaaaaaaay way way way back in season 1; a little episode called "Call of the Cutie". Apple Bloom was once friends with a pony named Twist, and immediately after Twist got her cutie mark, they stopped being friends. Stopped talking to each other, stopped being seen together. Everything fell apart, and Apple Bloom got herself new friends- Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle.

 

Foreshadowing.

 

So yeah, it's gonna happen. Again. If somepony else gets their cutie mark before Apple Bloom, then likely, it'll impact the friendship enough to have her pack her bags and look for new friends that are blank flanks like her. And with the experience she's had in the past, if she gets her cutie mark first, the outcome will still probably be the same, with her moving on and finding new friends that have cutie marks, if Scoots and Sweetie don't get them, because that's what she's accustomed to, apparently.

I just home at least one of them forever remains a blank flank. (or at least into adulthood) I'm interested in the concept of adult blank flanks that can still find happiness in their life without a cutie mark

IMO they have to get their cutie marks eventually. I'm glad they didn't stick with the "must get cutie mark" theme in S4 as we saw some great development for Scootaloo &, to a lesser extent, Sweetie Bell, and I think eventually that we need to cross another threshold. They can only stay blank flanks for so long before it gets tiring, IMO.

 

I'm not saying that everything needs a conflict, but the CMC could use something to really test and grow their friendship and bond.

In order to clarify this rumor (and because it crops up ever time a new Season is about to air), I will tell you something that I was told by one of the writers awhile back.  The year that you see any of the Cutie Mark Crusaders get their Cutie Marks is the year that you will see the series finale.

 

Now don't panic here.  All they're saying with this is that the Cutie Mark Crusaders getting their Cutie Marks is such a final stage of their character development, a culmination of everything they've worked toward throughout the series, that it's something that wouldn't really be encountered until the character arcs are being closed out.  And this couldn't really happen until toward the end of the series.

The year that you see any of the Cutie Mark Crusaders get their Cutie Marks is the year that you will see the series finale.

 

Agreed, I don't think the CMC (or at least one if them) will get their cutie mark during season 5...unless it's the last season.

There is a singing competition episode with Sweetie Belle being judged by Rarity, Vinyl, and Octavia. Diamond Tiara gets a song this season so this is likely present here and may be the foil that makes SB realize that it is her love for music and not wanting to defeat a rival that is important that earns her CM. It is assumed SB will have a music themed mark. Coincidence?

 

JT himself said that this is the season that something they have built up for years will finally be shown. The only non head canon thing that they have not shown and referenced constantly are Starswirl the Bearded and ... the CMC Cutie Marks.  

 

Starlight Glimmer is still out there ... the connection is too juicy for the writers to pass up. 

 

 

 

 

I'm completely content either way ... if it happens or not. Though I think its finally going to happen. CMC will always be the CMC with or without their special talent known.

It's a little insulting to the writers to think they could not expand upon the CMC's characters after they have gained their cutie marks.

 

Much like Twilight becoming an alicorn princess, the CMC getting their cutie marks would just be another step down the road in the continuation of their character development.

McCarthy and (maybe) Mitch would be the only writers really privy knowing that. The other staff writers would not know that years in advance. Cause you know ... not high on the totem.  Most of the writers go through a system of pitches at a writing summit for that season only. Mitch kinda filled in a little as Story Editor this season so he may be aware of more. Also, as we have been proven time and again ... directives do change with MLP:FiM.

I'm pretty sure it won't be before "Appleloosa's Most Wanted", the sixth episode of the season, anyway. There has to be a lot more development for Apple Bloom in the episode coming up for that to happen.

I think the CMC need to get their cutie marks and move onto to the next step

of their lives but it could also start a good road to Gen 5 with our CMC being

in the for front to come.  I mean you can only work out so many stories of

them trying to get marks before you get into a bad loop of coming of age

I think Season 3 was still going on when it was mentioned.  I don't remember who it was that said it (though it might have been McCarthy).  But the short version of it is that the Cutie Mark Crusaders getting their Cutie Marks would be such a final step in their development, that it 'wouldn't be inconceivable' to have it happen in the last season of the show.

 

Whether this is still the case or not is uncertain (though I was hearing from writers about Princess Twilight as early as mid-Season 2, and we know the end result of that).  But I can't imagine they would have the CMCs reach their ultimate goal unless they thought the show was going to be coming to an end.  

 

After all, and I've said this before.  The CMCs are about getting their Cutie Marks.  That's why they're called the Cutie Mark Crusaders.  If that goal is accomplished, they aren't the Cutie Mark Crusaders anymore, because they accomplished what they set out to do, much like how the Fellowship of the Ring can't be called the Fellowship of the Ring after the Ring is destroyed.  

 

Though I suppose they could come up with a new name for their group, should this happen before the last season of the show.  But again, I just don't see it happening until then.

I'm hoping they get their cutie marks this season, or at least one of them do. It would be really interesting to see how it affects their friendship, and what they do after that. They could still be the "Cute Mark Crusaders" too, they wouldn't need a new name, just a new goal to keep that going. Maybe helping other ponies find their marks?

 

 I really don't want that to happen in the series finale season, does anyone else just hate that sorta thing? It's like when I hear people say Twilight becoming a princess should have been saved for the finale, I hate major changes to a series being made right as it's ending, because then you can't see the effects, and it just leaves a hollow, empty feeling. That kind of feeling is the last thing I want this show to end on.
