What do you think Luna/NightmareMoon did on the moon?

It was already answered in the comics. She was the queen of a race of shadowy darkness things that corrupted the animals that lived on the moon and made a kingdom of dark shadow monsters!

But then you have to ask "Is the moon hollow?"  I've seen some old Sci Fi stories with aliens in caves in the moon (Sorry, ICR names -it has been decades & I'm bad w names)

 

It doesn't have to be hollow, she didn't have to be physically existing, she might not have had a body at the time, mentally trapped in darkness.

Taking into account the insane amount of time she spent on the moon, and the kind of mood she woke up on, I would assume she was asleep the whole time. Otherwise it would have been maddening. That kind of isolation.

It's kind of hard for me to take into account any comic related info, since I mostly skip on everything non show related.

Well there is a couple of ideas the fandom has speculated on. Went all "Let it Go" and built herself a castle, met and possibly fought aliens, founded her own moon kingdom, suspended animation, etc.

 

I myself am partial to the idea that she didn't "physically" exist during that time. Nightmare Moon was sealed within the moon in more the metaphysical manner than being plopped on it's surface. (Otherwise why couldn't she just fly back?) Nightmare Moon was trapped in the abstract realm of the moon. Luna on the other hoof? Oh poor Luna. Lost within the recesses of her own partially possessed psyche.

Stayed on the moon for a thousand years and spent her free time giving the citizens of Equestria nightmares. I like the Fiendship is magic arc for Nightmare Moon because it ties into exactly how Luna got her dreamwalking abilities, as well as explains exactly why ponies were so terrified of her, when she'd only caused an uprising for what seemed to be a few minutes before being EOH'd in the show.

She probably didn't do anything. I'm guessing she was asleep in a sense during most of that time. Prolonged isolation to social creatures, especially with the very social ponies, would be psychologically damaging & traumatising. Now, multiply that by 1000. NMM and/or Luna should've been a shambling, even catatonic wreck. Lifetimes upon lifetimes spent alone, in one fo the most barren & sterile, stimulus lacking environments imaginable, should've at least unhinged her.

 

Instead, NMM resumes where she left off, and Luna is responsive and receptive after the exorcism, and reverting back to her old ways just a month or two later. So I'm guessing not much was done, since it seems like there wasn't much passage of time for them.

She was put to sleep inside the moon, dreaming nightmares, which is represented by the "mare in the moon" symbol.

I highly doubt she was in any kind of physical form.

Don't worry, though, there's no such thing as time when you sleep. Beyond the veil, perception is not linear anymore.

I think she was imprisoned in the moon. Which would kinda explain the Mare in the Moon pattern that was on the moon until she escaped. So she was in stasis the whole time.

 

Or maybe she was just locked in darkness the whole time, kinda like illidan.

Honestly though I believe she was dormant.  I would hate it so much more for her if she was aware and lonely for so long.

Two possibilities:

 

-The first one is that she hibernated, and didn't feel the time pass; well, she did, but not one thousand years.

- The second one is in the comics, and that would make the moon someplace we can live at (don't think the creatures or Nightmare Moon can survive without air or in extremes temperature)

 

Either way, she didn't feel as lonely as some fanfictions love to write about

I feel as if Luna would have gone insane, all jokes aside, if she was awake. I feel like even Celestia would not be THAT cruel. Let her sleep the years away instead of awake on the moon for a thousand years.
