I loved the episode, I missed MLP and i would have taken almost anything for the premier only for the show to return

what really surprised my is the fact that magic can interact with cutiemarks

i mean, we've been thought that cutiemark magic is special and unicorns magic cannot interact with it, but apparently you can remove a cutiemark and store it in a bottle, and the default cutiemark is an equal sign

it was the easy way to explain this, a suggestion that came up with on the spot is instead of making it so the unicorns magic is capable of removing a cutiemark, the magic stuff is able to, we can even say that it is the 8th magical item, and he was forgotten

they could've thought of a better name for the stuff too, "The Wand of Sameness"? really?

and by the way, why did the kids had the cutiemarks? dont they need to discover their cutiemark before they change it?

its a very messy comment, i know

I'm new to forums, hope ill get better at it  :squee:

Welcome to the forums my friend, glad to have new ponies here!

You know, there's something I find rather interesting here.

Each one of us has something special

That makes us different, that makes us rare

We have a light that shines within us

That we were always meant to share

And when we come together

Combine the light that shines within

There is nothing we can't do

There is no battle we can't win

When we come together

There'll be a star to guide the way

It's inside us every day

That there is some serious foreshadowing.

Mmh, it has always been one of the main ideas of the show. It's what the cutie marks mean.

OK, I just finished watching it and all I can say is WOW!

This show is for little girls......Right! >_>

Also, was it just me or was Applejack's voice off? It sounded a lot deeper to me.

So many things in this episode that I remember arguing about discussing during the first hiatus! It was a fun direction to go chasing the concept without giving away all the little secrets.

Once again Fluttershy is forced to carry the team. The girl deserves a medal.

I personally had From watching it because the humour was great but Pinkie was funny as always. Also my stomach I also like Starlight glimmer as the villain, since she has pretty much created the ultimate utopian town and the brainwashing thing was downright creepy.

But I also love the concept of cutie marks being taken, since that's what popularised MLP from the very beginning in the 80s. The mane 6 were really good interacting with the villagers (great to see MA Larson back again for this season) and Fluttershy takes a major role to save the day in the end, which is something we rarely see with the element of Kindness. I also love how she has an open mind.

The only thing I thought was weak was the climax since i imagined a big battle like in the previous season premiere. But I understand that the situation was more subdued.

So overall, the humour was great, animation was great, opens up a ton of creative ideas, Starlight was a good villain (although a little bit Sunset Shimmer-ish, seriously why do all of the villains besides TIREK, Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis and Discord, need to be unicorns?)

The story was great, every character had a chance to shine and all around great concept to tie into the shows themes

I'd give it 3 1/2 stars out of 4 or an 8.5/10

A toast to a new season of ponies! /)

I seriously wonder why nopony would follow Starlight into the cave though... maybe there's something really dangerous about it?  Then again, what would the ponies have done if they caught her? Have the royal guards send her to the dungeon? lol

Minor thoughts in 3, 2, 1:

Andrea Libman's performance as Pinkie Pie is improving. She's no longer screaming out her lines and she's been toned down a bit, like it was before.

Some of the village ponies look like the OCs of some the cast and crew members e.g. Tara Strong, Meghan McCarthy etc.

Double Diamond must shower himself in Vanish ditergent every night. Seriously, he looks so white!

Thank god Derpy wasn't there to eat some of Sugar Bell's muffins. (No offence)

Fluttershy is best chimney sweep.

Agreed. That's why Fluttershy is best pony.

Maybe they thought that it was useless to purchase her because they couldn't reason with her, or that she was already too far away...

READ THIS PLEASE. MINOR PLOT SPOILERS IN THIS POST.

I would like to preface this post by saying that I do indeed enjoy the show and enjoyed the season premier. However, looking at critiques of the show and being without new episodes for a long time have made me quite critical of most MLP-related works. I'm not trying to put the writers down or shit all over the show. I'm just giving my COMPLETE and HONEST opinion on the first two episodes because I love the show and want it to get better. If you disagree with a point I make, please tell WHY you disagree and cite examples to support it. I don't want to be the guy responsible for turning this thread into a warzone. That being said, I hope to spark an intelligent discussion and not a flame war. Cheers :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought the season premier was alright. The music and visuals were very well done, and the lack of a complete and perfect resolution with the villain being defeated or converted to a friend was refreshing. I appreciate the attempts by the writers to flesh out the main characters a bit more; the dialogue has improved quite a bit, but I can't say I'm too impressed with the plot.

If you think about it, Pinkie, Rainbow, AJ, and Rarity didn't really do anything. The only thing Twilight did was come up with a plan, and it only worked because Fluttershy happened to find out BY A COMPLETE CONTRIVANCE that Starlight Glimmer didn't actually give up her own cutie mark and conform to her own philosophy. The not giving up her cutie mark thing was not anticipated, but I totally saw her not conforming to her own philosophy from a mile away. And that's just talking about what happened! If Starlight Glimmer hadn't taken the mane six's cutie marks from the cave or gotten wet like an idiot, the plot wouldn't have been resolved nearly as quickly or simply. The animation and music were VERY nice, but I found the plot trite and lackluster.  It reaffirms the trend (that people other than myself have pointed out) that many of the more recent episodes with all members of the mane six have them obligatorily tag along but offer nothing interesting to the plot, which is not good considering that "the power of their friendship" was credited with showing the people of the town (which is never named by the way) the truth. Their friendship didn't do anything! The townspeople (with the exception of three individuals) didn't give a flying feather about their friendship, and didn't start caring about it until AFTER they found out that Starlight Glimmer was lying to them (which they frankly should have been able to figure out on their own). I enjoyed the episodes for what they were, and am glad to have more new episodes. I am, however, disappointed that the writers spent most of their time focusing on the dialogue and not on the plot. The solution they went with and the fact that they didn't even give the town a name comes off to me as lazy writing.  Though I may have been VERY critical and nitpicky of it, the first two episodes of season 5 were a fun and acceptable start to the season, but were nothing impressive and definitely didn't present a situation that we haven't seen or thought of before.

Also, was it just me or was Applejack's voice off? It sounded a lot deeper to me.

I thought her voice sounded a bit off as well.

Yeah, I thought the same thing too when I heard AJ's voice but I didn't really think anything of it. Also couldn't believe they tried to brainwash the girls by keeping them captive, as well as expressed some socialistic ideas. So much for a kids show

*watches new episodes*

...

Whoa, got a lot of potential there.

Not gonna talk a lot about the episdes' plot here now, just that it was good. Period. Nothing mind-blowing, but an excellent initial situation for the entire season, given the possibility - or even foreseeable guarantee - that Starlight Glimmer will return at one point or another. And her motivation is very interesting, to say the least. Animation got even better than it was last season and the song, while catchy, was nice but rather simple.

Oh, and we obviously have a Hall of Freindship now, cannot wait for someone making an edit of this one:

Woke up today, hopped on my comp and turned on some pony with @Miles  :)

And after the initial viewing, I must say... Wow...

That was fantastic. Like... it was emotional, funny, and introduced several new very likeable characters. I like how the villain was just an ordinary unicorn, and not a mega-powerful pony with an ancient dark past or something - that's fresh. The dialogue was incredibly well written, and it flowed really well. The ending was unique - someone other than the Mane 6 conquered the villain, which is perfect in relation to Twilight's new status as the "Princess of Friendship".

Overall this was a very mature episode. Not only in the subject matter, but the execution. Still a "little kid's show", aye?

Bravo to the MLP team. It's already one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. I tend to jump the gun a lot with proclaiming episodes are amazing right at the start, I know, but this legitimately felt like something different. Good stuff.

I just had another thought. Like I said before, I really liked that Starlight Glimmer is a normal Unicorn antagonist; no metaphysical intervention, no otherworldly beings; not even a real magical artifact. But because of this, we are left to realize that she stole dozens of cutie marks all on her own. It's shown that cutie mark-effecting magic is not up to the power levels of Alicorns. True, cutie mark-effecting magic is nothing new, Magical Mystery Cure was predicated on it. But even then, the Elements of Harmony were what catalyzed the spell that Twilight cast. Starlight Glimmer had no such magical artifact, it was all her own magic. So while it may take extraordinary talent to do so, there are some dark implications of somepony less than an Alicorn being able to strip one of their cutie mark.

So, the episode was actually awesome! Quite different and for once the premier didn't involve some huge battle. Admittedly the take reminded me a bit of George Orwells 1984. xP I really liked it though!

My big question however is who else locked in on "The 8 enchanted weapons?" They don't just mention something like that and not bring it back later. Glimmer wasn't defeated either. I'm sensing connections here...

Man, I was so busy in the morning I couldn't watch it 'til now(okay I was playing video games, gimme a break )...

Anyway, it was certainly rather different than previous season premieres, to me anyway. No huge crisis or uber-powerful villain(still a villain, albeit kinda small-time), but a new kind of mission to help others with friendship problems- and it works. The show just keeps evolving every season with something new it seems, love it. Characters were great as always, the new characters were all very interesting especially towards the climax, and all signs point to a great season to come.

Sure, I wouldn't have minded something a little more action-oriented, but it was a very strong start. Welcome back, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic- you were away for far too long, but we'll always be the best of friends. :please:

9/10 needs moar Rarity

also Starlight Glimmer is kinda cute

I really liked the episode! It was funny (the moment with the cupcakes), the new involvement of the magic of cutie marks (that guy created a damn bridge with balloons!), and Starlight Glimmer was particular: I really liked the moment where she shout "QUIET" to Twilight ^^ Hopefully we'll see her again, it seems.

Making an actual serious non-troll post on what I thought of the episode.

I liked it a lot. It felt new and interesting. And I liked that the mane six weren't the only ones doing the saving.

What's with all this talk of socialism? There is no exploration of equestrian economics in this episode. If anything, the brainwashing is more akin to that of an authoritarian state, especially one with a cult of personality.

I don't really know what I was expecting after so long inbetween seasons, but whatever they were, this opener blew them away completely; very well done! Hopefully the rest of the season is close to this kind of solid writing.

Loved the sass and the message and lesson behind it. I would say it was one of their most mature friendship lessons they featured to date. Super fanatastic~

Have the possible social catch-22s of what equality stands for been brought up in this thread yet?  There's some real-world issues on my mind --though I don't know that can be talked about here.
