  1. 1. Is it foal abuse to name your foal "Troubleshoes" or etc.?

    • Yes, no parent should choose that kind of name for their foal.

    • No, the parents can choose any name they want. I mean we choose dumb names sometimes.

    • No, pony names are like cutie marks and the parent has to go with it.

Personally I think it is insane in a world of magical ponies where names have a meaning for the parents to give their foal such a name.

I can't recall an instance where a pony has had a daft name.

Because it seems like their names naturally reflect an element of them(not a talent, but generally some kind of trait) I imagine it would be possible, but also something that could be considered taboo. Just like naming in the real world, people are less likely to choose a name that would potentially have a negative impact on the kid, unless an exception is made due to certain varied events(family names, names related to an important event, etc).

Seeing as their names pretty much explain them, it's probably a bad idea to call your kid 'Murderous Death-hooves'- it's also generally a nod to their talent, so yeah, criminals are easy to pick out in Equestria thanks to parents.

What about a name that eerily predicts your destiny? Take Granny Smith for example. It must have been awkward for her to be addressed as such before she had grandchildren.

Yes, but did "Murderous Death Hooves" become a criminal because the parent named him thus, or was he destined to become a criminal and the parents just helped society know ahead of time?

I also blame Derpy's parents. -_-

But actually, I think it's cartoon logic, their name goes with their personality/role.

A classic example of plot convenience though it would be rather interesting to find out how parents come up with some of these names I suspect that they are perhaps aided by magical or spiritual forces.

I could imagine a police lineup in Equestria,

Cop: okay we are going to show you the suspects and tell you their names *reads list of names*.

Witness: It was him, it was definitely Murderous Death-hooves.

Added the spoiler prefix as this does cover a character from the new episode. :)

But yeah, Equestrian naming conventions are difference from human namings, soooo...I wouldn't call it abuse. :)

This was exactly what was going through my head when I said that!

Yes, but did "Murderous Death Hooves" become a criminal because the parent named him thus, or was he destined to become a criminal and the parents just helped society know ahead of time?

And therein lies the biggest question of fate Equestria has ever known. Is the talent decided by the name, or is the name chosen by the talent?

I think the only way it can actually be considered abuse is if it causes them harm, psychologically. So, being called McFartsalot would probably be abuse, being called Murderous Death-Hooves would be fine..Kindof. He wouldn't get bullied at school, at least. He's probably a really friendly guy, wonder how he got his Cutie-mark?

Now, this all applies in Equestria, but does it apply not in Equestria?

...

Totally naming my kid Murderous Death-Hooves!

If you ask me, Troubleshoes Clyde isn't his real name. It probably started as a nickname before he got his cutie mark and after getting it, the name stuck. We really can't say for sure, we have never seen what happens to a pony after getting a cutie mark in detail.

Well we don't exactly know how they are named. The names do almost always seem to be indicative so there could be some magic involved, but even as a kid, Troubleshoes didn't seem to be bothered by his name, just his luck.

Unless the names of all the ponies are actually nicknames and their legal names are a bit more like our's, I just do not understand how every single pony's name always matches with their cutie mark which they do not get when they're born but when they're old enough to talk and go to school.

I guess you can kind of count this as child abuse but it is nothing like beating your child. However giving your child a weird name could lead to him having problems with his name, people making fun of it and what not but this is My Little Pony we're talking about, every other pony has weird names so Troubleshoes does not stand out that much.

I used to think that names were given later on after a foal showed some indication of who they are. .. But than Pound and Pumpkin were named at their Foal Shower before they were born.  It does seem a little abusive to me. Unless they do see Princess Celestia or some other pony who would tell them what to name their children, but I don't think so because I doubt that they had time to see anyone during their foal shower.  UNLESS there is a pony that frequents foal showers as sort of a fortune teller pony who tells you part of the future of your foal...Maybe I'm making it more complicated than it has to be.

I think it would be easier to understand if names descriptive of specific talents or personalities were really nicknames that caught on later in life, or if not all ponies were named at birth, but later on. However, I'll settle for cartoon logic, after all, this is a show where Pinkie Pie can do what she does, and Twilight can get smashed on the head by everything but the kitchen sink and survive.

Also, he doesn't wear shoes. Might have made more sense to call him Hooves.

He does wear horseshoes. You can see it in his hoofprint.

I don't think it's foal abuse, to be honest his name is a little cool and unique like any of the other ponies we've seen with unique names. Also going with what Ziggy And Angelbaby said at least he wasn't named Snail.

I'll quote myself from another nearby topic....

I always wondered how many ponies get their names and THEN get corresponding cutie marks. It's as if the name you receive dictates what your likes, dislikes, and final career choice will be!

(I'm thinking... Cheese Sandwich, Diamond Tiara/Silver Spoon, Shining Armor, Snips and Snails, etc...)

Names clearly ARE given at birth in most cases, as we can see the Cake babies have names and they DON'T have CM's yet. Does that means they are BOUND to not only having cake-based cutie marks, but marks that actually represent their names? That's how it seems to go in a lot of cases. His parents actually asked for trouble. shoes.

I don't think granny is her first name(i think they just call her that cause she's old). Or i may be wrong.

There may not be much evidence for this, but my headcanon has always been that many ponies are given a nickname later in life when their personality/talents develope.  Sort of like a native American naming convention.  I mean, obviously, nopony would know that Fluttershy would be shy when she was born.  And with Troubleshoes, I say it's a nickname, a moniker that he earned when he started causing trouble.  In fact, it's probably a cruel nickname that the other colts called him in school, and it just stuck.

Lucky guess maybe? Sometimes the name doesn't need to be related at all.

Well maybe they're not named at birth, but after a few months.

Besides Troubleshoes is a pretty badass name. Still beats a lotta names we have, notably Gaylord...
