Should past generations of MLP be getting the amount of disrespect and hate?

I notice on certain boards/ blogs that My Little Pony gens, 1- 3 get a lot of what I perceive to be undeserved hate and abuse from many of the Gen4'ers. I also don't see many past gen fans who are willing to try and defend past gens, or be as creative with the vintage ponies as the Gen 4'ers are with their pony cast. While I can understand that animation and voice-acting was pretty bad in the 80's and 90's, if you compare it to what it is, today; I still don't think that's a reasonable excuse for people to be bashing the older gens so relentlessly and ruthlessly as they do, given the time period and advancement in such technology. (it's inevitable, if you're going to try and compare what was made in the past with what was made in more recent years).

 

Personally, I have ponies that I absolutely adore from past generations of My Little Pony. Toola Roola, Star Catcher, Shady, ALL of the Flutter ponies....but I won't deny that there are certain unfavorable aspects to the episodes of those generations, but it doesn't make them unbearable. Just as there are unfavorable aspects and characters in Generation 4 for me. There are still ponies I enjoy seeing and investing in the show for.

 

So what are your thoughts on the amount of hate and such that past generations of MLP seem to receive? Are there aspects of those gen that make them worth watching for you? Are you, in any way bothered by the lack of creative things (art, crafts, music, fanfic, animations, ect) for the past generation ponies?

I honestly don't mind the older generations. I think it's sort of become a joke now to hate on them. Sort of like how people make jokes about hating Justin Bieber or 1D.

A lot of people think G1 is ok, sometimes even had good stories. Not sure about the opinion on G2, but G3 was considered the worse, ESPECIALLY New Born Cuties, which had HORRIBLE animation.

G1 is decent from what I've heard, but the same cannot be said at all for G3 or G3.5.

 

Seriously, G3.5 has nightmare-inducing animation, and the less said about it, the better.

 well a lot of the people that hate on G1-3  are people from 4chan or trolls. MOST bronies don't go out of their way to trash the older generations. and a lot of them have never even seen it they just hate on it because other people do

In general there is an appreciation for G1 and what it started. Re-imaginings of G1 ideas in G4 have been taken well, and there is no shortage of fans who clamor for old villains from G1 to transition ... which is still happening. Regarding the other Gens, I will simply say this: the Brony community is huge. The relative lack of interest in G2+ and the lack of fan created content focused around them should be telling.

 

Far be it for me to tell someone what they should and should not enjoy. If people dislike any of the generations then I am perfectly fine with it.

Generations 1-3 (ignoring 3.5) are actually not that bad, so no, I don't think they deserve the hate they get. Sure, G4 is definitely the most refined of the generations, but generations 1-3 can easily be enjoyed. Generation 1 has a lot of fantasy elements and has very adventure-y plotlines. Generation 2 is nice and relaxing, and just plain fun to watch. I may have a bit of bias towards G3 as I watched it a lot when I was younger with my younger sister, but I'm fine with that show as well. It's honestly not that bad, and nowhere near as terrible as some people claim it to be in my opinion.

 

So yeah, I don't think they deserve the amount of disrespect and hate they get.

 

However, G4 is still my favorite.

I don't 'hate' on the old gens really, but I can definitely say I do not like most of them, especially when compared to gen 4. Friendship is Magic breaks away entirely from almost every generic trope that the old gens were pretty much built upon, especially and specifically 3 and 3.5, such as the very dumbed down writing and often painful animation. Maybe they just targeted a much younger audience then FiM does now. I have heard that gens 1 & 2, mainly 1, they actually aren't that bad at all for what they are, so 3 and 3.5 are mainly what I am focusing on.

 

I don't think the old gens should be hated on, but their many flaws should be noted. The jump in quality that FiM has is absolutely astounding.

Generation One seems to be slightly bearable. I have not seen it ever but I am pretty sure I could watch it for about thirty minutes before I would have to stop in case my IQ level dropped.

 

However....what came after Gen 1.

It's all girly girly nonsense. Exactly the kind of shows little girls should NOT be watching. The current show is STILL girly but it is a million times better than the old MLP.

Well the previous gens do deserve hate as far as I'm concerned, however though G3 (regular G3) isn't anger inducing bad more so just incredibly boring (seriously I was yawning half way through). And "abused", I don't think toy lines have any feelings last time I checked.

I went back and watched all the previous gens up till G3.5, but then I hit a snag because Hasbro seems to have locked down Twinkle Wish Adventure pretty well, meaning online viewing is out, and I wasn't interested enough to want to pay anything for it. Besides, G3 starts off ok IMHO, aside from the very first episode, but hit a reef not long after and went on a downward spiral hitting a particular low point when it got to Core 7. Given its trajectory, I did not feel particularly hopeful about G3.5 and decided it wasn't worth the effort to try and figure out how to watch it.

 

For the most part, I think each past series had some good points, and it was interesting to see where some ideas for FiM might have originated, but none of them are nearly as good as FiM IMHO. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad I watched them, but I don't have any desire to watch them again. I wouldn't say they deserve so much hate, but I also don't think any of them hold a candle to FiM.

I love G1!  

 

I used to hate G1.5, but I watched another episode and liked it. The first episode I watched was a bad episode.

 

G3. I love the theme song but hated everything else about it. 

 

G3.5. It's just terrible.

The generations that came between G1 and G4 were kind of...um...how do I say this in a nice way? Well, they're not my cup of tea. I'll just leave it at that. That being said I'm sure every generation has some good qualities and maybe I simply haven't seen enough of them (but I really have no desire to) I don't believe G1 deserves to be hated on, I mean you're talking about the generation that started it all! While it had it's flaws it will forever be a cherished part of my childhood and, as others have pointed out, it did have some pretty good stories. I personally love hand-drawn animation and in my opinion some of the best cartoons ever made came from the late 80's and early 90's. The original MLP didn't have the best animation but it wasn't the worst for it's day either.

Of all the generations prior to G4, only G1 prior to Tales deserves an ounce of respect. While it's definitely a product of its time and aged poorly (especially their animation), it treats its audience with respect and takes advantage of its all-ages, unisex roots that FIM later capitalizes.

 

But the others?

1. Tales embraces cruelty (the plots are mean-spirited and the characters are generic and mean-spirited) and considers it funny when it's not. It doesn't understand humor and executes morals with plenty of unfortunate implications.
2. G3 doesn't give a damn about quality. Its stories have major logic lapses (both in canon AND in connection to our world), a ton of filler, and lame "comedy." The characters are one-dimensional stereotypes. It follows continuity, yet doesn't stick to it. It's slice-of-life, but does it incorrectly. Aside from the animation and bright color palette, it doesn't deserve any praise whatsoever.
3. G3.5 (specifically Newborn Cuties) takes the bad qualities of G3 and makes them worse. Even the animation and character design quality sunk so low, and they may not be the worst parts.

The three above exemplify why you shouldn't pander to a specific age range of one specific sex, whether it's boys or girls. For Tales, G3, and 3.5, they all pandered to girls. They're objectively bad for several reasons and were partially responsible for the franchise being a major laughingstock for quite sometime.
