Moments in Games you had Trouble with

Moved to Elsewhere

Recommended Posts

We all have had those moments where you pick up a game and you're having fun with it. When you get to a certain point of the game, there tends to be that one moment where you just struggled and it ruined the gaming experience for you, sometimes to the point where you stopped playing. So here are mine.

Super Mario Sunshine: That level with the dying water lily.

This is practically an infamous level in the game. You go into the level and see you once again have to collect 8 red coins. The problem is, they are all dispersed over rushing water that if you fall in, you die. So you have to control this water lily through the water and jump up to collect the coins. You only get one shot because there's no easy way back. Oh, and they put this little pipe at the end that you think will take you back to the beginning of the level but no, it takes you back to Delfino Plaza. You might think that wouldn't be a big deal but the problem is that the level is extremely tedious to get to. It's in a pipe on an island covered by goop that only Yoshi can melt, and Yoshi can't swim. So you have to take Yoshi over this slow moving boat, without him falling into the water or running out of juice I mind you, just to play this already hard enough level. At least this one is not required to beat the game.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: The final battle with Cyrus on top of Mt. Coronet.

This one is partially my fault. You see, I was one of those kids who would only level up my starter and use the other slots of Pokemon for HM slaves, and I always chose Turtwig. I would be cursing through the game with this giant turtle beast destroying everything in sight up until this point. Basically, Cyrus is the boss of Team Galactic, and Team Galactic mainly carry poison types, which grass types are weak to. Sure, my Torterra was part ground type, but he always had a way around it. In fact, he covered a lot of weaknesses. Like how he has a Gyarados with Earthquake so I can't switch into electric types. Oh, and here's the kicker: you can't save before the fight because it's back to back with another double battle that's also not exactly easy. And even if you lose the fight, you still have to redo that double battle.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue Rescue Team: The fight with Gangar's Team in Sinister Woods.

You know, I really want to like this spin-off more. It's got a lot of amazing things in it. The storytelling can be even better than the main series games, they give so many Pokemon great personalities, and the art style can be stellar at times. But I just have one question that to me sets it back: Why does the gameplay have to be so monotonous?

Yes, I feel the gameplay and controls make this particular boss fight hard. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a dungeon crawler, not particular east for fighting multiple enemies at once. So when they center a boss fight around that, it makes it even more frustrating. One's a ghost type. Whelp, there goes all my normal attacks. Oh and it has hypnosis. Just great *sarcasm.* The other two also aren't that easy to take out. Not to mention, if you're partner faints, even if you're still up, screw you you're starting the whole dungeon over. It doesn't help that the controls feel so tedious. I have had moments where I'll accidentally tackle in there instead of use another type of attack, and since that doesn't do anything, I'm screwed a whole turn. They basically moved the move select screen to the B button and not A. And since there's 3 of them, they get to attack you 3 times and you only get to attack one of them once. I had to use an infinite heath cheat to see the rest of the game. This might just be me sucking at these types of games, but I felt guilty having to cheat through a game.

So, what are your hardest gaming moments?

There's a couple of apps where you have to pay to go on, which is always annoying. I was playing this game called Radiant Defence, it was fun... Until I got to a point where none of my strategies worked :/ I got upset and uninstalled it.

Another thing that bothers me is when you lose and you have to restart... The entire game! That's very annoying. This happens actually with another app I had made by the same company as the one above... o_o

ALL OF Paper Mario 64 now as a adult is much easier but when I was a kid that whole game was just one big puzzle and as a kid I saved up for a strategy guide and every time I played it I kept it next to me. But now I know that game like that back of my hand.

But there was a part in paper Mario 64 that always got me the (DARK FOREST) where lady bow is the path to get to her is one heck of a puzzle now as an adult is easy but as a kid i was the hardest thing in the game for me.

PS: (any parts in a RPG game where you need to be a certain level to do something or kill the boss cuz he too strong. its not cuz its hard it just annoying !!! (ex Fallout/ Paper Mario / Borderlands Kingdom harts / final fantasy / Earth bound  and others )

Half-Life 2 comes to mind. I was stuck for 45 minutes (I was determined not to use a guide, but later parts of the game I gave up that challenge..)

All I had to do was pull a valve to flood the place. You know what's even worse?

I couldn't use it before, I tried. The subtitles said [Locked] when I tried to pull the valve and I never came back to that part.

The final battle against your rival in Pokemon Leaf Green was always annoying to me a lot of years ago.

I too was the type of kid who only leveled up my starter (always the water type) which came to bite my hard during the elite 4.

After finally making it to Lance and defeating him I thought I was done but nope.  Green/Blue/Gary comes along and destroys my Blastoise and the rest of my "team".  Plus seeing how this was before I really stocked up on full restores, Max Potions, Revives and stuff at the elite 4/by the elite 4 I was basically doomed at the get go.

Then there is the Little Mermaid level in Epic Mickey Power of Illusion.

Seriously that was one gigantic leap of difficulty in a game that was nowhere near that harsh before.

It took my by surprise and lead to many many many defeats.   Those darn spikes ewww :eww:

Lastly I would have to say the Naga sections from The Legend Of Korra Platinum Games video game.

Back when I first started with the game and was going through story mode for the very first time, those parts of the levels (chapters) were very very aggravating and unforgiving. Especially the one where after you finally finish the regular section (after countless challenges and retries) you get Another section to go through.  This time it is like a boss fight and you have to defeat 3 mecha tanks.  That too took me for surprise and lead to many many losses.  Thankfully I have gotten a lot better at those sections and they no longer annoy me.

When I played the classic Pokémon games, I was one of those kids who would always pick the water type starter. Then I would catch a bunch of weak Pokémon like Pidgey and Caterpie to use as my HM slaves. I would only use my starter which was not a good strategy. So when I faced a team with Pokémon that was super effective against water types, I was a goner.

Super Mario 64's final boss, more specifically the final phase. I mean, the first 2 parts of it aren't so bad, but once the pad thing becomes a star, then it got real tedious.

Also, the second level of the Lion King SNES game. That vine swinging. That ostrich jumping. That EVERYTHING ;-;

In Kingdom Hearts 1 in Hollow Bastion when you fight Riku/Ansem after dragon Maleficent. I remember he was a boss that  I could never get past. Even with good items and different equipments I could never face him. It took me around 3 to 4 tries with different keyblades that could give me an advantage against him. I remember it was with the Metal Chocobo was the keyblade that finally ended that nightmare .

In Kingdom Hearts 2 in the battle with most of the organization members. This is also when I only used cure and didn't know most of the other good spells like reflect :squee: . The members of organization 13 were very tedious and difficult to handle at times and it frustrated me to no end. Demyx with his water clones and the insane time limit, Xaldin with his barrage of attacks and that dragon that seemed impossible to dodge, Xigbar as well with his multi shots that are not easy to dodge when he is behind your view of the camera. The final battle with Xemnas was a little tricky when you play as Riku and you had to go to the original to save Sora. I always failed at that part and I could never reach Xemnas. Then the final part where you have to use the X and triangle button to block Xemnas final barrage. I didn't know what to do so I always failed, and it took me about a week when my friend showed me what I did wrong.

Finally in Pokemon Diamond when you reach Hearthome city. After getting two badges and making it to the next town and not being able to face the gym leader I didn't know where to go or what to do. After trying different ideas I just put the game down and gave up for a while. It wasn't until a few months later that I had to get the strategy guide to figure out I had to go face Maylene and Wake before facing off against Fantina.

The entirety of Majora's Mask. I've always been terrible at Zelda games and that one was surely no exception. Still love it though even if the 3 day timer kinda makes me uncomfortable.

DEFINITELY THE LAST LEVEL OF CAVE STORY. Took me almost a year! (Finished it two weeks ago!)

P.S. I LOVE Pokemon Mystery Dungeon! :D I actually find the gameplay quite appealing, but I'm not very good at skill-based game. And yeah, that particular fight was difficult. I find Hidden Land in the sequels (Time/Darkness/Sky) to be much more difficult, though.

Super Mario Land 2 for the Gameboy immediately springs to my mind. The itself is pretty easy but that final level, that being Wario's castle, is just crazy. The platforming with this moving platforms was a nightmare for me and even still is today, it is just very difficult to time those and the entire level had to be completed in one life. That's a difficulty spike if I ever saw one.

Uncharted 2 on Crushing also had plenty of moments that were very frustrating, the train level in particular and the final fight in the game. If I recall you could only get hit once or maybe twice on that made fight on Crushing, needless to say that took me quite a few retries especially since developing a strategy was hard to do.

Same here. I keep meaning to replay it as I've only beaten it once. The looming time-limit makes the game too stressful for me though, even with the half-speed song.

Yeah, I could never beat the game when I was younger when I got to that point. Even now it's frustrating. I think that since the overworld allows all of the worlds to be completed in any order, the difficulty stays stable for most of the game. It was pretty innovative for handheld platformers at that time, but it killed any sort of difficulty progression.

in the first goldensun, for the life of me, i couldn't beat the twin-dragon. to this day, i have yet to beat him.

and sephiroth in KH 1 was also annoying, since for whatever reason sora didnt learn 2nd chance till lvl 70+ this means i had to beat him without 2nd chance.

in Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction, in the final battle, you start off with 8000 LP. and your vs. pegasus, who has 20,000 LP. and if you manage to beat him, you have to fight reshef. 40,000 LP. and the worst part of that is your LP doesn't reset after a battle.

Yeah, they kinda dropped the ball on difficulty progression. I like the idea of consistency, especially for a game on that system, but they blew the doors down at the end. Made it infuriating to me. Super Mario World definitely had much better difficulty progression thanks to its linearity. That game had some frustrating moments as well, like against the 'triceratops' bosses and that whole castle they are in (why a water level?) but the game presented it in a much better pace overall.

The levels and bosses in the early Mario games, and the levels and bosses in Spyro 1, 2, 3, 4, and the Legend series, the levels in Portal, Binding of Isaac and Binding of Isaac Rebirth, a lot of early stuff in Pokemon and the gym leaders and the elite four.

Most common cases for me are RPGs, where a boss slaughter me and I realize I have to grind, ALOT, to defeat it. Sometimes, I leave the game for weeks, because grinding is BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING  >_>

Lots of backtracking: This can annoy the heck out of me in games where exploration is not the strongest point, and if it's for a small task makes it even worse. I love The Thousand Years Door, but it has an excessive ammount of backtracking in some chapters. Another game guilty of that is Bravely Default, though, is not backtrack perse, it makes you visit the same places and do the same things and fight the same bosses over 3 times before we get to the final

Demonic Spiders: That's a tropes in Tvtropes that describes enemies that are either tough, cheap, or both, and are common. I hate losing health and resources in my way of a boss because of these bastards  >_>

I just beat Halo 1 on Legendary mode today and let me tell you, it was one of the most difficult games I've ever played and won because of the new difficulty. The second and third levels had some absolutely ridiculous enemy placement and had terrible checkpoint markers. The hardest levels had the worst checkpoint markers while the easiest levels put them all over the place, almost like the game is just teasing you. nearly 1/3 if not a little less than half of the enemies are the elites, the majority of the elites being the more difficult variety, and I had to coordinate every single move and not make a single mistake. Otherwise, I'd have to go back and redo all of that hard work over again because I didn't get a checkpoint when I needed it the most. I had to restart the 3rd level because I didn't have a weapon that is pretty much required to beat the level and I couldn't go back and get it because I was now in a completely different area and couldn't go back. Speaking of weapons, on Legendary mode, some of the weapons are recommended to be avoided because they'll be useless the majority of the time. I got so sick of using the same 2 or 3 weapons over and over again and not being able to have any diversity with the guns. Everything else would have probably gotten me killed. I hate having to play a game a very specific way with no room for trying anything different. And now I'm being challenged to do it again with all of the skulls on. After finding out what each skull does, I've determined trying to play the game like that would be impossible for me.

I'm never playing Halo like that. I want my games to be fun, not frustrating and rage inducing to the point where the game becomes nothing more than a chore.
