Anyways, it's a tough choice, flight or magic? Being able to just take to your wings and fly would be... So amazingly spectacular. I mean, there's got to be nothing like it. I can only dream of it.

But then, magic? An entire arcane field that you can study and master? Teleportation, telekinesis, and so much more, with self-levitation to boot? I'd have to pick unicorn.

I mean, you can sort of get some sense of flight with hot air balloons, aircraft, or a kind, string-winged pegasus friend giving you a lift XP but there's really no substitute for magic.

Earth ponies aren't as limited as you might think. They have greater strength and speed than other species, and have tactile tails. Pinkie Pie appears to have crazy magic fur too, that can also be used to store things. If I had to choose a species to be though, I think I'd be a unicorn. I'm not really an athletic or hands on type, and I'm certainly not a daredevil. Besides, having a few magic skills to help with daily chores and such, would be pretty sweet. I'm not super academic either, mind you, and I doubt I would be dedicated enough to learn half of what Twilight did, so I think my magic skills would be more like Rarity's, which are more geared towards making life easier for her. In all due honesty though, especially since I wouldn't have control over what kind of pony I'd be anyways if I were born as one, I'd find something to enjoy no matter what species I was. Pegasus is very appealing, but I'd go with Unicorn no doubt. Why? Well, magic seems to simply be channeling of a certain internal energy. There is an absolute fuckton of energy in matter (enough in a glass of water to power manhattan for a week), so I'd guess Unicorns are able to process a very small amount of ingested matter into energy. This process takes time, so it is possible to dry out your supply and need to recharge. The thing is, it is just pure energy. With enough knowledge of the universe (me), practical problem solving (me) and a nick for technology (me), it would become possible to manipulate the energy in any way. In order to be able to use the energy without using standard spells. Some examples: Telepathic relay network, artificial thrust, energy absorption shields, creation of energy relay objects (objects that when worn grant the wearer access to an energy supply in there), direct control over matter itself, just about anything is possible once you figure out energy itself. And honestly, it is just pure badass. Oh, and I could shoot knockback lazers.

This. Most unicorns only have the ability to levitate, and some (maybe all) have a personal unique ability as well. A few gifted unicorns have more spells. This have to be taken into consideration, just as you can't just perform a sonic rainboom if you are a pegasus.

 

So it's basically:

Levitation (+some quirky magic ability, like rarity's finding gems)

Flying

Being strong (+maybe also some quirky ability, like pinkie sense)

It's hard to say if you need to be gifted in order to actually use the knowledge of the study. It seems so in MLP.

 

But if anyone could study magic and gain more abilities it is more interesting. Then again it would require a huge amount of studying, given that even Twilight struggles. And she got an enormous excess magic capability and even a cutie mark for magic.

Pegasus. Being a unicorn and having magic could be kind of cool, but unless you're the next Twilight Sparkle, there's not all that much you can do with it besides simple levitation and whatever spells pertain to your specific vocation. 
But being a Pegasus, you could fly! You probably wouldn't fly as fast as RD, but still, the fact that you can fly would be so awesome. I'd still want to live in Ponyville though even if I was a Pegasus, rather than Cloudsdale, because I'd want to live among all the different kinds of ponies rather than just Pegasi. Plus I'd feel more special about my flying ability if I lived in Ponyville than if I lived where everyone else among me could also fly.

Sure, being a Pegasus would come with responsibilities. I'd have to have a job with controlling the weather. And a job, no matter whether you're flying during it or not, is still a job and takes effort. But whatevs. It'd be worth it.

Well, to be fair, Earth ponies apparently have Strength, because sometime in the season finale for season 4.(I can't remember when exactly.) they mention something about the Earth ponies losing their strength or something. Which is what I assume makes them unique. Like wings and horns for Pegasi and Unicorns.

 

 

Anyways, as for me, i'd go with Unicorn, my ponysona is already a Unicorn, and I love magic, in all kinds of RPG's and the like, I'm always into magic typically, not that I don't like swords of arrows or guns or whatever, but typically magic is my first pick. Just because it's awesome and I've always liked it.

Maybe.. but maybe the other Unicorns do not study enough. It's not like most Unicorns study as much as Twilight afterall, and study is required for learning magic. Along with practice.

 

Twilight just gets it faster, but lacking talent doesn't necessarily mean others can't get there, talent is kind of like a head start in my eyes. If that makes any sense.

 

Or you could just get good at magic while still a filly/colt, and then later your talent will become magic, or something like that ;p.

 

Regardless, i'd be cool with having a few spells here and there anyways.

Just as a random thought, I feel like Zebras don't count as an actual race of ponies, but a race of their own, light gryphons and the like.

 

Plus, idk what talent Zebras have as a species, since there has only been like 1 on the show so far ;p.

I'm not a germaphobic or anything, but eww. That is quite disgusting. Plus other things that Earth ponies (and possibly Pegasi) would have to use their mouth for. I think levitation looks like it might be quite handy, even if it's just so I don't have to touch things with my mouth...

 

Of course, i guess this won't matter if you don't plan on having foals as a pony, or taking care of any foals, but still...

I actually looked that up on the FiM wiki, and in retrospect Applejack uses her tail to lasso stuff, and Pinkie uses her tail for things like holding a camera, while I've never seen any other member of the mane six use their tails for stuff. There came a point where this topic was nagging me a little, and I had to find out if there was any merit whatsoever to being an earth pony. As it turns out, yes there is. I was also curious whether Alicorns had any earth ponyness in them. They're supposed to, but I couldn't imagine what that meant in terms of abilities or any kind of measurable trait. I think I read that earth ponies are also very in tune with the earth, which is why they're excellent at agriculture. In any case, I'm glad there's something to level the field at least a little, since it first appeared that there were just two cool kinds of ponies, and one that blows by comparison.
