technology No Audio jack in the iPhone 7.

Recommended Posts

So I have done a lot of research when it comes to the not yet released iPhone 7, and I have found one thing that got my attention in a not very happy way.

So as we know the iPhone 7 is actually going to have many interesting changes and features like the new "Charger Pad" and that it would fix the issues that the iPhone 6 had for example the bending. But one thing that turned me off for the iPhone 7 was when they recently announced that there is no audio jack. For people who do not know what that is, you know that one little hole you plug your headphones in to listen to music and such? Well, they are not going to have that because it apparently "Makes up too much space" yet, the thinnest phone on the planet (Vivo X5 Max = 1.36 mm) has an audiojack. But there is a solution for that! says Apple, just buy a $300 dollar pair of Bluetooth headphones and you will be listening like a pro!. But honestly, is that really what we want??? To do nothing but kiss Apple's ass by paying them endless amounts of money?

Tell me what you guys think about this major change.

Yes. Apple fans do that. They would pay a lot of money for a pair of Blue Tooth headphones just so they can get the latest product.

I personally don't like it, but I'm an android fan. The problems charging was either the charger got old, or it was the wrong charger (which I had to use after the original charger got old.)

I think the lack of an audio jack is a terrible idea, but knowing a lot of Apple fans, they would still buy it.

DAMN that's a stupid move. I'm sure about 85% of people who use Apple products use the audio jack for listening to music, watching movies/shows, etc. Most Bluetooth headphones are shit anyways, with audio delay and such. This is why I haven't upgraded to a new phone in 4 years.

I'm not an Apple user, and quite dislike many of their products. This just makes me dislike their decisions even further. Restricting people to wireless headphones(or if possible corded but through the port at the base) is just a severely daft idea. Even worse if they preface it with an attempt to push their own branded headsets at the forefront of the decision. There's no reason why such an option should be removed and "we want to make it really thin" is completely a marketing gimmick. Nobody actually cares if their mobile is a millimetre or so thicker than whatever other brand is out there.

Samsung have also been on my chopping block for their entirely irresponsible decision to remove the ability to replace the phone batteries. I love my S4 to pieces, but it's on its third battery because of overheating(a combination of terrible climate conditions and bad luck). The irreplaceable battery is one of the reasons why I decided against going the Apple route. If I recall correctly, that was all part of 'making the phone thinner and compact' too.

Well, I'm an Apple user/fan, but even I'm questionable of this move. I can see the rationale for it as wireless sets aren't a bad idea, but still...that's a bit steep.

This has to be the stupidest idea Apple has had. What's the purpose of making it so thin that it can't include a simple audio jack? Who is seriously demanding Apple to make their phones thinner? When I buy a new phone I look at the specifications not at how thin it is. I'm not not going to buy a phone because it's a third of a millimeter thicker than another one.

I used to use iPhones but the fact that I couldn't do certain things without jailbreaking pissed me off. I like how customisable Android is.

I'm actually typing this out on an iMac. I'm thinking of going back to Windows the next time I buy a new computer. Apple just annoys me now.

Hello! I actually work for a mobile store that sells Apple's products and Apple contacts us the moment they have confirmed something for release. At this time there is nothing definitive from them that confirms the iPhone 7 will have no headphone jack. So keep in mind this is all completely rumors. The final product could come out and be completely different considering we are almost 9 months from the phone actually releasing. But as it stands right now, there is nothing 100%. I am a long time Android supporter and even I can not find it in me to criticize Apple unfairly. And I do not mean that just as saying it's not fair to criticize them before anything is confirmed, but also because I have to give credit where credit is due and here's what I am talking about:

Removal of the headphone jack actually could be a good thing in the long run. First of all, our headphone technology is ancient. To achieve better audio quality using Lightning based headphones (which do exist) is a smart move. Not to mention bluetooth also is catching on and produces better audio quality as well. 3.5mm jacks are really just holding phones back. The removal can make room for a bigger battery and Apple can finally make the phone 100% waterproof now which is the other big rumor. In the short term, yes it'll piss people off, but think about it: this could convince others to finally move away from the 3.5mm standard and we can finally start seeing better quality headphones becoming the new thing.

As a long time Android user and someone who used an iPhone back in the day I can honestly say: I have given up on Android phones. While people may not like Apple (and I'm certainly not saying they are perfect) Android has had so much time to reach the "premium" level that Apple has convinced people they were and they have failed. I'm sorry but when every flagship Android phone has major problems and issues it's pretty easy to see why iPhone is so strong.

I'm sorry but I have a Galaxy S6 and it's already having issues and it's not 6 months old yet. To top this off, in my store ALL the Samsung phones and tablets ALREADY have screen burn in. Samsung makes crappy screens that do not last. We have had the same 2 iPads in our store for over 3 years and they look identical to when we bought them. Androids are made out of glass and plastic and they break so freakin' often. We service broken phones with insurance and 90% of the broken phones are androids and the deductible is higher on Androids than iPhones. I had a Nexus 5 which was a premium phone as well, and the screen was being eaten away by the oil from my fingers after only a year and a half and many people were complaining about an update that basically was bricking tons of people's phones. To top that off, my Nexus 7 2012 broke from 1 low drop and my Nexus 7 2013 bricked after an Android update only 2 years later.

I have had so many Androids and no matter which manufacturer I go with, any time I contact them about fixing them when something goes wrong they either try to say why it's my fault and they won't fix it, say it's past warranty so no dice, or claim my insurance somehow doesn't cover the problem but they'd be happy to replace it for full price. I had 1 issue with an Apple product in my entire life and Apple fixed it for free in record time. Apple's device build quality completely THRASHES androids. I say this as an Android fan. Androids are built like crap and these days being sold for close to as much as iPhones. To get the "premium" Android phones they are only like $50 less than iPhones a lot of the time and less than half the build quality. Say what you want about Apple, but their phones build quality trumps their competitors in terms of regular use. I had my iPhone for 5 years when I had it before it died, I've not had a single Android that lasted that long yet. That's 5 years where it was usable and didn't just slow down after they stopped making that device.

This is why even if the iPhone 7 is missing a headphone jack, I will just suck it up, buy a 3.5 to Lightning adapter and suck it up because next phone I am switching to iPhones because I have more or less given up on Android. I love the customization and openness, but I am tired of spending only $50-100 less than an iPhone to get a phone that dies in 1-2 years when I have had a good experience with Apple products and their customer service which has taken such good care of me in the past.

I think that is a really bad idea for people who wanted to go for a walk and listen to their music that was downloaded off the internet using headphones. I bet many Apple fans would spazz out and switch to Samsung or Nokia because of that wrongful decision.

Honestly, I see that headphone technology is ancient, but apple could at LEAST give a pair of Good Quality Bluetooth earbuds or something like they do with previous models. It's just sad that they are forcing us into paying 100's  of dollars just for a small thing of hardware. And yes, I can see all of the advantages but seriously though. If Bluetooth technology was good when it comes to headphones (very little brands make good ones) then I think everyone would be fine.

Honestly, die hard fans will never complain. They would just calls us "Mental Retards" for saying something with constructive criticism and keep using Apple.

Lightning based headphones are better than 3.5mm as they transmit the data to the headphones and the headphones then produce the music locally whereas 3.5mm just moves audio to the headphones. Trust me, Lightning based headphones and USB for android is the way to go.

I agree that we should be pushing the manufacturers of headphones to advance their technologies, but it shouldn't be this sudden. Regardless of how many insane fanatics they have on their side no matter what they try to pull, if Apple goes through with this they WILL lose customers, not because people don't like Apple, but because they just legitimately can't afford it. Apple should be introducing the model with an AUX jack, and we as consumers should be driving the headphone companies to develop better products.

Unfortunately, Apple will probably do this and get away with it. Hopefully it drives down the price of wireless headphones. I just bought an iPhone 6S and really like it, but it was WAY too expensive as it was, let alone if I had to buy $300 worth of headphones on top of the already steep price....jeez, you could get a fully loaded iMac for that price....

This shit right here is a perfect example to why I abandoned all apple products. All they keep doing is taking features away and supplementing them with overpriced, proprietary nonsense. The only device I owned by them was the overpriced iPad 2 and that will be the last thing I ever purchase from this horrid company.

I bet Apple is also going to have wireless headphones to go with it as an "accessory".

I wonder where they would get them from...

Meanwhile I can plug any earbuds or headphones with a 3.5 mm jack into my Android phone.

Like it matters anyway, Apple is still going to sell a ton of them. I just hope that others don't follow suit.

As a person well vested in driving, I own a bluetooth headset, and for a really kick ass pair of bluetooth headphones you really only need to pay anywhere between 50-100 USD. There are better models out there at more expensive prices of course, but your don't need to kiss apples ass to get them. I am not an apple fan at all. I hate their products, but even so, rumor or not, considering this I can see their point of view on trying to bring people into their realm. They want their products to be accessible to advancing tech. I can't say this as a person who knows, but it isn't exactly rocket science to take a look at a corporation and make an educated guess about their goals. Anyway, back to the point I am here to make. You can get a good pair of bluetooth headphones for a decent price, and it is well worth the money you spend. I bought a headset about a year ago, and now I am on my second set. By choice of course, as I found a company who makes open ear headsets, which allows me to be immersive in my music but still keep me in touch with the world around me. Remember people, technology is ever changing, and we will have to change with it. That being said, I see why you are upset, but maybe forcing people to move to the next step isn't such a bad idea. Hell my headset has a much sturdier build and higher quality sound than any pair of audio jack headphones I have ever had. So, just do a little more research on the tech before deciding to say "Now I gotta spend $300 on a new piece of sound tech." You have options, and they aren't all that bad.

Trust me, when you try them you'll see how they are far better. :)

I agree that we should be pushing the manufacturers of headphones to advance their technologies, but it shouldn't be this sudden.

Sudden? We've been using the same headphone technology since the 1800s...

My question to you though is why buy a $600-900 phone and use cheap $30 headphones that will not produce high quality audio? That is what makes less sense. If you get a high end phone, shouldn't you get high end headphones to listen to it? I mean that's like buying a new car but putting an old engine in it. So while it may be more expensive up front, in the long term headphones will go down and really it's a better investment.

I feel you on the price point, but honestly if you have a top of the line phone, you may as well have top of the line headphones too, you know?

Meanwhile I can plug any earbuds or headphones with a 3.5 mm jack into my Android phone.

There more than likely will be an adapter for older headphones so Apple users will still have the option to use old headphones more than likely. Apple may think their products are "premium" but even they know that not everyone can afford them.

This shit right here is a perfect example to why I abandoned all apple products. All they keep doing is taking features away and supplementing them with overpriced, proprietary nonsense. The only device I owned by them was the overpriced iPad 2 and that will be the last thing I ever purchase from this horrid company.

Ordinarily I am right there criticizing Apple, but... I can't criticize them for this move because this has NEEDED to happen for a LOOOOONG time and no one has had the balls to do it but Apple. Our headphone technology is ancient and has been holding back audio quality. Not to mention... Bluetooth headphones are hardly proprietary. If anything this has been a very open-source move by Apple.

People did not realize how much the LG Tones blew up when they hit the stores. LG could not keep them in stock when they came out. Bluetooth headphones are getting a LOT better because Bluetooth 3.0+ has resolved a lot of the major issues. The technology is only getting better and on top of that Lightning (and USB C for Android) based headphones are the way to go! They produce amazing sound quality.

Bit of a non-story really.  You can get a decent set of Bluetooth headphones for a heck of a lot less than $300.  And if you're a serious audiophile then you certainly won't be listening to music on your phone anyway.

I wouldn't touch anything apple with a bargepole, and I'm not a Samsung fan either, but the presence or lack of a headphone jack isn't going to be a big consideration for me when I eventually replace my current phone.  My main consideration will be that it doesn't cost more than £200.

I'd be happier if this topic was titled, "No iPhone 7." Honestly, I'm not an Apple user myself-besides the iPod I got from my dad like 2 years ago-but I just see them producing phones so fast that it's unnecessary.

I myself am a huge music lover and I listen to music wherever I go. I can't afford to buy Bluetooth headphones. I highly doubt that they would put them in as an accessory since they're so expensive and a huge opportunity to make even more money for Apple. But hey, you never know I guess.

Apple is just the most "influential" company so when they do something, everyone talks about it, but literally everyone else does the same thing. Samsung introduced the Galaxy S7 a few days ago and literally all its "new" features were features they took away from the S6 that the S5 had. Samsung also began working on the 7 like a month after the 6 came out. Every company does this, Apple just gets the most flack for it because:

  1. It's cool to hate Apple.
  2. Apple makes so much money that whenever they make a pin drop it's a huge noise.  They ARE the second biggest computer company in the world in terms of revenue.

So it's not that Apple are the only ones doing it, it's that Apple haters make sure every "mistake" or "flaw" Apple does/has is broadcasted despite literally almost every other company doing the exact same thing.

So that means that iPhone 7 users will be forced to listen to their music outloud from those crappy speakers if they want to listen to their music?

Great, just great. That's the very last thing we need at my workplace.

Not at all! If this does happen they will have an adapter for 3.5mm to Lightning to use older headphones and and Lightning based headphones (which I'm sure will come with the phone) or bluetooth headphones. Basically the only "real" difference is you'll just need to get an adapter to use the older headphones.

Bluetooth headphones don't have to be expensive in fairness. I have a pair of these that work great:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bluedio-Shooting-wireless-bluetooth-headphones/dp/B00LA520Y8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1456581485&sr=8-4&keywords=bluetooth+headphones+bluedio

The battery on that is actually amazing. A lot of people say they snap easily but I've had mine for about a year and it's still intact.

I don't particularly like using those on the bus and things, I'd prefer to use regular earbuds.

It's fine! I'm not criticizing you, If anything you're demonstrating a bigger problem with the industry in general! The fact that you didn't know is not really an issue, it's showing that the other companies are doing their best to keep people from realizing they are doing the same crap Apple does. I mean don't get me wrong, Apple is the devil. They will rip people off and not think twice, but I can only criticize them for things they are legitimately doing wrong that no one else is doing is all.

Yes, the iPhones are price gouged up the wazoo. It only costs Apple like $147 to make an iPhone and they sell it for $700+, that is utter BS. However Samsung does the same thing, Sony does the same thing, LG does the same thing, Apple just charges a "little" more and then all the other companies go out of their way to make sure their customers criticize Apple for doing it so no one notices they are doing it either.

It's a crappy state of affairs really :c
