Wow, toughie.

Well I've always been fond of The Legend of Zelda's main theme:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qkYSuWSPkHI

Or the music in the series in general, it's always an aural treat as the medley above should suggest.

Xenoblade Chronicles also has some of the best music you will hear in a game, with my personal favorites being You Will Know Our Names:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=V4vCEHpv6Hg

And the main theme at the title screen:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gfhom1H77Vo

Seriously, all the game's music is amazing, look it up!

Also, recently I have been very pleasently surprised by Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, which also has some really incredible music, like the intro theme:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=oAvCssRk9DY

And probably the best song in the game, Blue Bird Lamentation:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=gFJ1r6_4mW4

The game's music is MUCH better in the context of the story though, particularly that one.

Man, there's so much more, but I think this will all do for now. ;)

Bastion probably has my favorite game soundtrack of all time.  Not only does it sound amazing outside the context of the game, but the album itself is incredibly well put together.

Yes, this. Bastion had an awesome soundtrack, and it's the only game from the HIB 5 which I actually downloaded the soundtrack for. All of it's pretty good, but the credits track "Setting Sail, Coming Home" sealed the deal for me. I mean, I love multiple vocal tracks when they're not harmonized together. And that's pretty much the whole two minutes for that song.

Of course, there's a lot of instrumental talent too, it's not just the vocals. I particularly liked "From Wharf to Wilds" and "Brusher Patrol".

*Sigh* I'm sorry to say, but when it comes to video game soundtracks, All of the Elder Scrolls soundtracks, composed by Jeremy Soule, utterly destroy the competition. Soule composes the most relaxing, peaceful, ambient music I have ever heard. I guarantee you that if you play any score from the Elder Scrolls (save for the battle songs) while you're in bed, it will put you into a serene sleep, and give you some good dreams. Here are two of my favorite pieces from him.

He also has his signature song, which is in every TES game from Morrowind to Skyrim. It is the same song, but tweaked a little in every game. I suggest you look it up. It's called "Over The Next Hill" in Morrowind, "Through The Valleys" in Oblivion, and "The Jerall Mountains" in Skyrim. Excellent song, has an almost mystical quality to it.

Jeremy Soule's pretty awesome too. Loved Wings of Kynareth from Oblivion, but I thought Morrowind had the strongest soundtrack between TES3-5. Bonus points on "Through the Valleys" if you played Morrowind before Oblivion, because then you're like "Hey, I know this quiet, peaceful song", and then all of a sudden the full orchestra kicks in. :)

Morrowind is not only the first Tes game I played, but my first RPG :) It is still the second best (Oblivion is my first choice) Elder Scrolls game in my opinion. I love it.

Oh my, I love soundtracks so much! In fact, it's my favorite genre of music.

I'd have to go with Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. Ah, so emotional, so auditorially arresting ....

I would have to say the Ratchet and Clank series soundtrack hands down. The music matches pretty much every level in all their games. I have at least sixteen songs from the game in my music player and I am planning on adding more. Yes, they are that good

You posted what I was going to post! :o

The Kingdom Hearts soundtracks are all amazing. But for some reason I especially love Birth by Sleep's. Maybe because that "The Silent Forest" track features the English horn, which I love.

(I wish a better quality version existed, but I can't really find one. I like the sound of the RE:CoM one the best. Saxophone sounds so nice when it's played pretty)

Perhaps this one might be partially nostalgia.

Why has no one said Jet Set Radio Future? Oh man, when I was a kid that game was the bomb, due to so many things - ESPECIALLY the music. These are my two favourites.

I'll admit, there are some annoying tracks but as a whole, the music lit up the game so much it's not even funny...

I absolutely LOVE the Super Metroid soundtrack. It's indescribable. I also really like the soundtracks in all the Zelda games, especially Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

MA BOI! I freakin' love that song. That whole OST gives me all kinds of hardcore nostalgia.

Given all the talk about Kingdom Hearts, anyone ever hear that upgraded soundtrack for 358/2 Days? One of the best boss themes imho is on that soundtrack,

.

This piece is definitely worth mentioning too:

from Birth by Sleep. It's essentially a comination of two boss themes, one of which being my favorite video game composition of all time, "Darkness of the Unknown".

I swear I'm gonna do a metal remix of that someday.

In all honesty, I would definitely have to put the Dance Dance Revolution series down for best soundtrack

There really has not been a time they have disappointed me (except on DDR II but it's only a minor blemish on that whole game so it really isn't worth mentioning)
