How did Luna Survive on the Moon?

I personally believe that Nightmare Moon didn't actually live on the moon. Instead, she was reduced to her magical essence and fused to the surface of the moon.

Yeah, i think i agree with this post. :) It makes sense to me.

Aka "LadyPKchu".

I changed my name again cuz lately fluttershy has been more my favorite pony :3 I like her innocence, and I think I may get active in the fluttershy fan club. I really like a lot of the other main 6 too though.

I'm also a FlutterDash supporter.

I still love Korrina from pokemon a lot and plan on keeping my Korrina profile for now :P

This. Luna wasn't physically chained to the moon, just sealed within it by the Elements of Harmony with a form of magical stasis. When the seal was broken, the Mare in the Moon vanished, showing that Nightmare Moon had been released.

Or, to put it in tropes, she was Sealed Evil IN a Can, not ON a can.

In the Comics there's already other creatures living there on the moon, so I'd assume the MLP moon has an atmosphere of some kind, the Mane six could walk on it just fine too. She likely got food and water from all of them.

If you don't want to count the Comics, for whatever reason, since a lot of people just like to ignore them, then a few other ideas were that she wasn't on the moon, but inside it, perhaps in some sort of Hibernation-like state, or perhaps her own Alicorn magic/The Elements magic had some way of protecting her during her period up there.

Nothing against you for not using comic canon, but I found it a bit funny someone with a Nightmare Rarity sig went completely against it. :icwudt:

There has never been any mention of their moon being unable to sustain Equestrian life forms. In fact, we have no way of knowing it it's actually a natural satellite. That said, I personally think she was magically fused with the moon. She may have been still aware of self, and passing time, but she didn't exist as a living pony entity.

As someone already said, there's some dumb, stupid, dream creatures already on the moon that she enslaves or something.

But seriously, just ignore that one comic. Her being literally trapped in the moon is somehow more plausible.

The comic was bad.

Really bad.

We've never seen the moon close up in the cartoon, it could be capable of sustaining life.  On the moon, in the moon, part of the moon, they're all perfectly plausible explanations.

We don't even know for sure anything about the 'mare on the moon' pattern on the surface, it may have been Luna herself when she become part of it, Celestia may have have fashioned it to remind herself of the heartbreaking decision she had to take, or maybe Luna fashioned it as a warning to Celestia that that she would one day return.

Like so many other things in the show, there just isn't enough evidence to be able to say for sure.

Pretty much what everyone else has already stated. I doubt Celestia would have been cruel enough to keep her dearly loved sister conscious for those 1000 years, more likely that she was kept in a magically induced stasis of sorts. It may have only seemed like 5 minutes for Luna. :P

I'm aware that the Fiendship is Magic miniseries gave her a bit of backstory on the moon that would contradict this, but the comics are broad strokes canon to the show at best. Imagine the mental toll it would take being isolated for 1000 years and fully aware of it the whole time. Think Luna would have been far more unhinged if that were the case.

Well she did live on the moon. It's not like ours at all. It's a place that's occupied by a bunch of aliens that make dreams for the ponies and she ended up corrupting them and making nightmares.

I was gonna say Cartoon Logic! But I like this explanation much better.

Magic.

The moon landing was faked. She was actually in the dungeon of her castle for the time being and celestia controlled the rays of the sun to make some sunlight miss the moon giving the appearance of it being there. *tin foil* :muffins:  Which explains why she ended up close to ponyville. She was driven to lunacy from her imprisonment and forced to feed off of random grass growing in the cracks of her cell floor for years. And Celestia unimprisoned her intentionally for her student to show up which is why Celestia never shows up to her holiday on time and they never explained how she wasn't there, because of Twilights admiration for Celestia she would never question her. Celestia was phone.

I think she essentially became the moon itself. Notice how the Mare in the Moon crater pattern disappeared when NMM was freed? I think that NMM was the moon.

Then why is there a moon after still?

Because there was a moon before she was trapped in it. When we see Celestia banish NMM in the flashback, we see the Mare in the Moon crater formation form. When the stars free NMM, we see the Mare in the Moon crater formation disappear. So, it stands to reason that Luna wasn't trapped ON the moon, she was trapped IN it. Temporarily, Luna became the moon.

So if a ghost possesses a person, are they being that person, or just possessing them temporarily? Like a parasite that mind controls a snail, is a snail now?

Or if I get a tattoo made out of living algae that algae is now me?

Or if I put a sticker on a cd. Or when a snake swallows a mouse.

She would have had to be in some kind of coma, because there is no way that she could be conscious for every living second of those 1000 years and not go crazy....also....how would she have remembered anything after those 1000 years?

I bet she was in a coma and it only felt like 1 second to her.

No no, it's more like... Have you ever seen the first season finale to Avatar: The Last Airbender? When Yue becomes the moon? It's kind of like that, but temporary.

Um no.

But I disagree. Like if you seal a person within an object they are not that object, or with Twilight being inside the book Glimmer was reading through a spell means she is the book, when its more like she was traveling inside it or using it as a media. Technically she isn't the book unless she is transformed into one entirely. Like how she transformed a bird or frog into an orange.

From what I understand, her essence was magically sealed away inside the moon like a form of suspended animation. She wouldn't have experienced the passage of time. If she had, she probably would have been driven insane.
