I would open my own company then give it to myself. Depending on the time limit of such a thing.  Then I would invest into tech I think is swell. Eventually want non-invasive cybernetic/cognitive enhancements and invisibility skin stuff that can change colors based on programmed mode. Perhaps even doing that tech with direct brain control of stuff if it could somehow become non-invasive would be amazing.

I'm gonna be completely honest... I'd pocket some of that money for myself, though only a small fraction of it (though honestly who wouldn't). As for who I'd give it to... I'd check stocks, and give it to the company that looks to be doing the best, then once the time comes, and I get more money out of that I'd donate a lot of it to cancer research.

What about stem cell research? It has the ability to be one of the most helpful and life-saving medical advancements in all of human history. It could be used to help people regrow limbs, cure paralysis, possibly improve Alzheimers, heal burn wounds or severe trauma, and various other conditions and injuries.

I would give it to Worldvision. It's a Christian charity that serves the most desperate needs the world over, regardless of religion, race, background, etc. They send aid for a large variety of needs like food, clothing, medicine, education and dozens more. Best of all, they educate and equip those in need to become self-sufficient as well by farming and other trades to either feed themselves or to generate an outside income. They send animals to provide eggs, milk and meat, as well as plants to grow fruit and vegetables to eat or sell. Another nice thing is that, depending on what kind of donation is made, the government will often match the amount, or even double or triple it, so the money goes farther.

This one is my personal favorite, so I'd go with this one.

But I would probably give it to the wounded warrior project. They get a lot of shit, but they were a big help to my father after he got back from Iraq.

If asked to give to ONE source, I'd really push back on that.  That's a lot of money to give to one place.  it would be better to create a foundation to manage and disburse to effective organizations.  Some places can pay huge social dividends for a donation, but would not be able to effectively manage such an influx.

You can do a lot of good with that level of support...

but it seems you are using the fact that the effect is too small to justify not helping?  That is the kinda of attitude that retards progress.  the impact on the people being helped can be extraordinary, and can pay long term dividends across generations.

I would make my own charity where the goal would be to help the lives of the poor in my city (I'd go for the whole country, but I don't think a billion would have a very big impact if it would be given for all).

 

 

It's not that I don't want to help, but rather that I'd prefer to see a big change in a place that's near to my heart than a much smaller change throughout the country....

 

I admit that its inefficient and selfish but this thread was never intended to find out the best way to spend a billion dollars in charity...but to find out where people's preferences lie, It just so happens that I prefer to help the poverty in a city wide area with a bigger amount....rather than helping the entire country.

I'd keep enough for myself and my family to live comfortably - buy us a house. (I would absolutely not store it in a bank - I ain't paying fees to get my own money and all that other stuff that only benefits the rich. I'd hide that stuff. I'd give it to Poniverse, and then make sure that we donate 99% of it to various charities that the community thinks would benefit from such a donation! (Honestly, that's a lot of money... Maybe even donate 99.9%, or add another 9 or two!)
