Your OCs as MTG cards!

Widdershins

Recommended Posts

MLP & MtG! My Little Gathering: Magic is Magic!

Something I've noticed often browsing DeviantArt for pony art is that these two fandoms will clash often, there's quite alot of cards based off the main characters & princess as creatures or Planeswalkers. So my question to you is: How would YOUR OC look as a card?

Now a few rules first:

It really helps if you already have a bit of a history with Magic: The Gathering.

Now mind you, you don't have to be a Planeswalker or a legendary card as the former is really just asking more work out of you as those cards tend to have three abilities then the usual one & the latter pretty much only means the "only one of these can be on the field at a time" rule.

Feel free to ask for help or critique on your card, such as balancing planeswalker loyalty, mana costs & so on, I for one look forward to discussing card mechanic minutia! Gives us something else to do in addition other then just a new way to post our OCs!

Things You Need for Your OC Card, when applicable:

Collective mana cost ( W=white,B=black,G=green,R=red,U=blue, then just a number for amount of colorless mana & other applicable symbols. So RU1= one mountain, one island, one of any other mana. BBBB= four swamp as opposed to B3 which would be one swamp & three of any other mana.)

Card or creature type, attack/defense, loyalty counters for planeswalker cards & so on as applicable!

Flavor text! But only if you feel like it!

But before we get to yours, let's get to mine!

Widdershins, the Spirit of Confusion

Mana Cost:  4UB

Card Type & Stats:  Planeswalker, starts at 3 loyalty counters

Card Text:   +2 Each player untaps a land, discards a card, then draws a card.

-3 Each player searches for, then plays a card from their deck without paying any of its costs. Then shuffle.

-10 You get an emblem that reads: Whenever a permanent is sent to the graveyard its controller gets X 0/1 pancake creature tokens that have "Sacrifice this creature: deal 1 damage" ; where X is that permanent's mana cost.

                                                             "And I Helped!!!" -Widdershins

Notes: Figured he kind of had to be a planeswalker because he's all interdimension-y. That, and Draconequus=Elder Dragons.

The main Idea I've got behind Widdy here, is for him to be  as much as a boon to your opponent as you. The longer he's up, the more confusion will hit the field! His first is there chiefly as a madness-enabler. His second, while understandably unbalanced gets alot of hefty stuff on the battlefield to make a good pancake standoff for his third go for a rather rousing good foodfight! That, and you could always just stock your deck full of counters & lure out all your opponents big stuff time after time & just sit there and counter constantly like an absolute monkey. Which is exactly why I said "card" and not "permanent" for that case.

Ambie Valence

Mana Cost: 6 colorless

Card Type & Stats: 3/4 Pony Changeling

Card Text: Ambie Valence shares the same colors and keywords as other cards you control.

Notes: Somehow, I just feel all Changelings ought be colorless. By "keywords" I mean anything from deathtouch, flying, haunt, dredge, regenerate & so on, basically anything that would require reminder text. Though while haunt would still attach him to a creature on death, he wouldn't be able to do anything while in that state & would be mostly useless. Same case with the other two which tend to require a cost of some sort, but as Ambie is only copying the keyword & not the cost he can have the keyword but he can't use it. Basically, he can't do first or double strike unless he's got somebody standing next to him showing him how to do it.

Will add more of my own later on down the thread's life span!

@@Widdershins @@Randimaxis

So, I showed my friend from before the cards you all made, and here's his response below:

====================================

[Hello! Penumbra, mod of the blog http://pxnxmbra.tumblr.com/where you may contact me if you possess a tumblr account. My friend Hazard has alerted me of this thread, and I am also a Magic Judge and have been making Magic cards for years and have gotten down what Wizards deems as "balanced". That being said, I wanted to correct some things here.]

Widdershins, the Spirit of Confusion  |  4UB
Planeswalker - Widdershins
+2 Each player untaps a land, discards a card, then draws a card.
-3 Each player exiles cards from the top of his or her library. Each player that exiled a card this way may play that card the without paying its mana cost.
-10 Each player gets an emblem with "Whenever a permanent you control enters your graveyard, you get X 0/1 Pancake creature tokens that have 'Sacrifice this creature: This creature deal 1 damage to target creature or player', where X is that permanent's total converted mana cost".
Loyalty: 2

[i changed Widdershins from 3UB to 4UB because of the abilities as written. And if you're going for a random idea, I would suggest the change I made on the second ability. The "search" aspect isn't "confusing", and was also extremely powerful on a +2. I changed it to a -3 instead. The original +1 was underpowered for what it did, so I changed it to +2 instead. I also changed the wording to properly fit an actual card.]

Ambie Valence | 6
Legendary Creature - Changeling
Ambie Valence shares the same colors and keywords as other permanents you control.
3/4

[i added "Legendary" because this isn't a standard creature. It has a particular name, and specially named permanents deserve to be legendary, even if their abilities are lackluster. Also, I removed the flavor text and artist copying parts, since that irrelevant in normal MTG unless it's an Unset (joke set), which hasn't been touched on in years. I increased the health by one, and the cost by 2 for balance. It's still low stats for it's cost, but it will get much more powerful as it gains keywords, and potentially with new colors.]
-

The Blackwater Quarry
Legendary Land
The Blackwater Quarry enters the battlefield tapped.
T: Add 2 to your mana pool. The Blackwater Quarry deals 2 damage to you.
1, T: Add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool.
"The biggest emerald mine in Equestria, where nothing is as it seems."

[same as I said before for the legendary thing, and it applies for everything else downward that I made legendary. This enters the battlefield tapped because being able to tap for 2 mana, even is, and especially because it colorless if extremely powerful. That, and it continues to tap for two mana a turn with no further downsides. So since it's a quarry, and it needed balance, I made it where it deals damage to you. Past that, I reduced the cost of the second ability by one, since it could act as a filter land fine with payment.]

Luther Blackwater, Patriarch  |  2BWG
Legendary Creature - Earth Pony
If you control The Blackwater Quarry, Luther Blackwater gains +2/+2 and has trample.
"My quarry.  My rules.  NO EXCEPTIONS."
6/6

[This was really underpowered, considering three colors. I decreased the cost by 1, increased the stats by 2, and added the benefit of gaining an extra +1/+1 if the conditions are met.]

Vylia Blackwater, Matriarch | 2BWG
Legendary Creature - Pegasus
Flying
If you control The Blackwater Quarry, Vylia Blackwater gains "R, T: This creature to deal 2 damage to target creature or player."
"Fine things are FINE, Dearie... but I strive for BETTER!"
4/4

[Also slightly underpowered in some regards, but overpowered in others. I increased the stats by 1, and made there be a R with the tap for the damage. That type of ability of mostly red, and sometimes black can color bleed for it (for a steep cost), it's mainly a white color bleed only more attacking or blocking creatures. That being said, if it has an R cost, it works better. Since red seems to run in the family (Oglevy), it didn't seem like a stretch to add the fourth color.]

Harcourt Blackwater, Master Thief | 1BWU
Legendary Creature - Earth Pony
Protection from Enchantments
If you control The Blackwater Quarry, Harcourt Blackwater gains flanking and +1/+0.
"Low and slow - go with the flow."
3/4

[This one seemed mostly fine, but underpowered due to cost. I reduced it by 1.]

Dax Blackwater | BWG
Legendary Creature - Earth Pony
If you control The Blackwater Quarry, Dax Blackwater gains "1: This creature gets +0/+1 until end of turn. This creature can block an additional creature for each 2 mana spent his way."
"Everyone deserves a chance... and a friend."
2/4

[Again, slightly underpowered. I reduced the cost by one, and made the ability a little more different according to flavor. From the flavor text I could tell he seems pretty friendly, but able to hold his own, so I changed him from a 3/3 to a 2/4, and gave him the ability to also be able to block an additional creature for every 2 that is spent to increase his toughness by 1.]

Oglevy Blackwater | 1BWR
Legendary Creature - Pegasus
Flying
If you control The Blackwater Quarry, Oglevy Blackwater has vigilance and can't be blocked.
Flavor Text: "I stopped listening... why are you still talking?"
3/2

[Was a little underpowered. I decreased the cost and increased the attack by 1 each.]

Blackwater Emerald | 3
Artifact
2, T: Add GGG to your mana pool.
"Blackwater Emeralds are hooves-down the finest emeralds in all of Equestria; they're perfectly cut and clear as a bell."

[No changed but formatting.]

Blackwater Manor
Legendary Land
The Blackwater Manor enters the battlefield tapped, and doesn't untap on your next untap step.
T: Add 2 to your mana pool. If you control any creatures with "Blackwater" in its name, those creatures get +1/+1. If you control "Luther Blackwater", "Vylia Blackwater", "Harcourt Blackwater", "Dax Blackwater", and "Oglevy Blackwater", those creatures gain +3/+3 instead.
"From the humblest of beginnings, the Blackwaters grew into a wealthy family; their mansion is a testament to what centuries of hard work can accomplish."

[Magic cares how you word things a lot. Otherwise Errata has to be made and that's messy. So I included all the information that would be necessary on this card. It also seemed slightly underpowered, so I increased the buff slightly. Also, it's disabled as a means to tap for mana for two turns (the turn you play it, and the next turn) purely for balance, in addition to the legendary rule, since it not only taps for 2 mana, but it also gives a significant buff to the Blackwater family, even if it's only +1/+1 to them individually.]

To Hazard Time & your friend Penumbra: I very much appreciate the effort! As these had most likely been spur of the moment exercises in creativity, they were likely never going to be anywhere near being balanced enough to be an actual card. Really am quite impressed & inspired by Penumbra taking the effort to legitimize ideas from a forum post!

Heh, though let me say first that I didn't know anyone would be attempting to legitimize these cards. You mentioned Color Bleeding abilities and I just got done posting a black creature with haste, which I'm quite sure is something Wizards make a habit of not doing. If there's any cards at all that do.

Hmm, didn't consider that name alone is what made a Legend. Which is kind of disconcerting as I've got a batch coming of guys that are intended to be real weak of their own accord. Was aiming for niche & lackluster with Ambie, as if he's sharing abilities he could easily reach Baneslayer Angel proportions & he certainly isn't the sort to lead the cavalry charge!

Hmm, your right though on Widdershins. Second ability ought be a negative, though was hoping I could use it to feed the third. Point of the third is for both sides to build up a swarm of tokens which can potentially target the other tokens resulting in a free-for-all as to who gets to what first. Don't get the exiling though...was aiming to be able to pick & choose what comes out, if you start exiling what happens to the exiled cards? If I dig though my deck for my counter, since I know my opponent will pick some hefty creature, what happens to all the land & other minor cards I exiled along the way to find it?

Hmm, Kiora was a creature fetcher wasn't she? I'll have to do some more research about this!

Edit: Thought it over a bit more, and how's this for the second & third abilities on him?

-3 Owner of target permanent shuffles it into their library, then reveals the top card of their library, if its a permanent card they put it onto the battlefield.

-9 You get an emblem with "At the start of each player's upkeep, that player puts the top card of their library into their graveyard then creates X 0/1 colorless pancake creature tokens with Sacrifice this Creature: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player, where X is that cards total converted mana cost."

(Don't really like the whole "his or her" wording, just seems like it only makes the text longer.)

Sure, why not :3 I'll make myself into a plainswalker

sig-4725810.sig-4723060.1478328585388763

Ooh, didn't know there was a website that did that too! I'll have to figure that out sometime when I've got pictures to go by!

But for now, let's move onto the Cephalli Family!

   Blither:   U1

 Card Type: Legendary Wizard Monger

Card Text: 1/1  All creatures gain 0/+1 & shroud

Flavor Text:  "Please, Don't hurt them..."

Flit:  G1

Card Type: Legendary Pest Monger

Card Text: 1/1  Handwalk (This creature is unblockable as long as opposing player has cards in hand.) , All creatures gain flying.

Flavor Text:  "Oh this is gonna hurt!!"

Shortstack:  R1

Card Type: Legendary Berserker Monger

Card Text: 2/1   Rampage, Shortstack attacks each turn if able, All creatures gain +1/0 & haste

Flavor Text:  "Hurt! Them!!"

Monolith:  B3

Card Type: Legendary Advisor Monger

Card Text:  0/4  Defender, All creatures gain Indestructible

Flavor Text: "Truly, one doth only feel pain when thy alloweth thineself to accept thy aforementioned, hurt."

Slimpsy: RU1

Card Type: Legendary Coward

Card Text:  0/2  Flash, Flip a coin, if you call it right, counter target non-creature spell & return Slimpsy to its owner's hand.

Flavor Text:  "Hurt anypony else but me!!!"

Sunny Flush: W4

Card Type: Legendary Knight Monger

Card Text:  5/5  All creatures you control gain Flanking.

Flavor Text:  "Ain' Nopony hurtin' MY big brothers!"

Gallimaufry, Creature by Committee: UGRBW

Card Type: Legendary Hydra

Card Text: 6/1 Trample; As an additional cost to cast exile six different creature permanents from your graveyard.  When Gallimaufry, Creature by Committee would be sent to the graveyard, instead return it to the battlefield with one of the cards that was exiled when this card was first cast. If there are no longer any cards exiled by this card when it is sent to the graveyard, exile it instead.

Notes: Why yes, Coward IS a legitimate creature type in MTG, it just hasn't been on a card yet. Same with Monger, as that was from a cycle of some real old cards. Was dickering on what to do with Slimpsy & originally wanted him to bounce & take two others with him, but couldn't justify that at any mana cost had to settle for some sort of self-flicker. The trouble with Sunny is that I know what white can do with a powerhouse like her that buffs tokens so hopefully being a Knight makes her a bit out of type for white.

Whelp, since My Little Threadie isn't growing all too fast, I'll chuck a few more ideas here! Starting with a few that are only tangentially related to my OCs.

    Pancake Golem: 4

Card Type: colorless artifact creature, Golem

Card Text: 2/3  Each time Pancake golem is dealt damage, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

Flavor Text: "They laughed at me when I said I could solve the worlds' problems  with pastry! Well! Who's clearly insane NOW?!!?"-Widdershins

   Syrup Golem: 5

Card Type: colorless artifact creature, Golem

Card Text: 6/4    When Syrup Golem enters the battlefield, tap all permanents     At the start of each turn, turn player may tap up to two target permanents.

Flavor Text: "Quite the sticky situa- Okay, I'll stop." -Widdershins

   The Muffin McGuffin: 6

   Card Type: Legendary colorless artifact

Card Text: Tap & Sacrifice a permanent: Target permanent becomes an X/X artifact golem creature, where X is equal to the amount of permanents you control.

Flavor Text: "...Well, it's still not a pancake." -Widdershins

(Side Note: I can fully see the art on this one! A huge open, stone chamber with light rays drifting down to a central chamber with a pedestal holding up a solid-gold muffin! Along the edges of the chamber are stone statues of the Pancake & Syrup golems and in the center we have a certain gray mare holding steady over the Muffin McGuffin, her eyes crossed in concentration!)

   Taer & Raer: GG2

   Card Type: Legendary Amphisbaena

Card Text:  5/3 Haste & Vigilance; Tap: Taer & Raer gains -2/+2 and can still block while tapped.

And now! Time for a battery of my MLP pirate OCs!

   Captain BleakBeak McQuay: GU2

   Card Type: Legendary Griffon Pirate

Card Text: 2/4 Flying; Tap: Untap another target creature you control, it deals X damage to target creature you don't control where X is its power.

Flavor Text: "Ah dunnae care what ya hit 'em wit', Just hit 'em!" -Captain BleakBeak McQuay

   First Mate "Mangepatch": GG1

   Card Type: Legendary Werewolf Pirate

Card Text: 9/9  Defender;  Comes into play tapped    Whenever a creature dies, tap First Mate "Mangepatch."

   Bucky Bacaw: GU1

   Card Type: Legendary Parrot Pirate

Card Text: 0/2 Flying & Haste; Tap: Bucky Bacaw deals 3 damage to target creature or player chosen at random.

Flavor Text: "Polly wanna crack ah skull!!"

(Side Note: We really need more pirates in just everything! Wanted McQuay to sort of work like the Houndsmaster cards with a bit of a slavemaster feel too. Woulda wanted him to untap himself too, but then that'd just be an endless loop of damage. Yes, Mangepatch is supposed to be utterly useless for such an epic big fellow! Also, five internet points if you can guess which card Bucky be based on!)

  • 11 months later...

So, with Unstable having come out recently, it's got my all excited and thinking again! Might have to revisit some of the earlier entries up on here, but It got me thinking about a few other things too. Firstly, one thing about Widdershins that's pretty integral to his character is that he's not very responsible with his magic. This often results in him leaving behind portals for anybeing to stumble in or use to their own plans. So, I came up with the idea of a new artifact type; one that just sorta sits there like an added bonus or a buff-on-a-stick. Like, you know, most artifacts tend to be. I don't quite see them as solely magic as just anybody can fumble into using one, so I don't see them as enchantments. But, sort of like how there used to be World enchantments. Which they stopped doing for a likely good reason.

Besides, you can't have colorless enchantments I don't think. That's kind of the theme I'm going for with Widdershins, is that he doesn't quite fit into anything and he's a little too risky from benefiting both sides without playing into what bonus he can get for you. So, for a new card type! Let me show you my Holes!

Pancake Party Portal!: 2 colorless mana, Artifact-Hole

Whenever a non-token creature dies, its controller summons a 0/1 Pancake token.

"My condolences... Have a pancake."- Widdershins

(Yes, the exclamation mark is integral to the title!)

Intellihole: 3 colorless mana, Artifact-Hole

Creatures get +1/+1 for every line of flavor text that appears on their card.

"Telling a story, living a life... don't really see the difference myself." -Widdershins

Reversal Field:  4 colorless, Artifact-Hole

Creatures get -4/0. All creatures with negative attack heal for that much if they would have otherwise dealt damage.

"Yes. Or No. To whatever you just said." -Widdershins

(Note: You know... pretty sure there's a "if opponent would be healed this turn, deal that much damage instead." sort of card...)

 Portal Hole: 5 colorless, Artifact-Hole

Whenever a permanent is targetted, its controller shuffles it into their deck, then exiles cards from the top of their deck until they exile a card that shares a card type with it. The player plays that card without paying its mana cost. Cards exiled this way are shuffled back into the deck.

(Note: Fhew! Gives you newfound respect for the trouble developers have to go through to fit everything in and in the right way! Portal Hole is probably the main idea out of all of them. I want Holes to be a bit more interactable with then Enchantments and easier to clear off the board. Especially in this case where the Hole itself can flicker itself back into the deck and on top of that, I like the idea of either side potentially getting the same, exact card back in place like they just wasted all the effort! Namely, Possibility Storm is probably my favorite effect in all of Magic and I wanted to put that on an easily whackable stick for anybody to mess around with! Easier to trigger, easier to get around without bringing the whole game to a screeching halt [Since if you've already got a few evasive manuvers on the field already, doesn't effect you much.] and, hopefully, it triggers off of one creature attempting to lunge for another.)

Speaking of replaceable creatures... While I have yet to figure out entirely how to work a swarm of mostly irrelevant Pancake tokens into anything, I do have some of a design for it!

 Pancake: token, 0/1 Colorless-Creature: Construct

"I have often, probably, said that if you do one thing, do it well and often. And do it until you gain recognition for it. Then keep doing it!" -Widdershins

Doomcakes: 1BB  0/3 Construct

When Doomcakes is/are destroyed summon a 4/4 dragon creature token with Deathtouch.

Beatings & Salivations Everybeing!   Creativity is something blatantly important to me as is no doubt evidenced by the 28 OCs I have posted here of the some forty plus I have, they're linked altogether at the bottom of my About Me page in my Profile & I would deeply cherish anything you wish to say about them! Among which of those I am proudest most of is my Draconequusona, His/My Ask Thread  and my Hydra, Gallimaufry or "Mauf" and their own Ask Thread!  Either way, sufficed to say, I am quite confident I have more OCs than you! Crazier to! Do You have a tatzelpony?! No, I rather think you don't! Hew-Hew-hew!
