How old are the ponies?

Some say the mane 6 are between 12-18 years, others say that some of them, like Rarity or Fluttershy, have already 20 years old.

 

There are speculations about CMC ages as well. Some say they're 5 years, others say they're 6-8 years old.

 

What do you think?

I think that the mane 6 are at least 18+ but we know fluttershy is a year older then pinkie so. I would guess CMC's ages would be 9-10 years old, just me though

Flutttershy and Rarity are apparently the oldest 19-20. Rainbow is said to be the youngest 17-18. Applejack, Pinkie, and Twilight are probably 18-19. The CMC i would say 8-12 in my opinion.

I think Rarity> Fluttershy > Twilight > Pinkie Pie > Apple Jack > Rainbow dash. At least thats the order I believe. Now I cant say exact ages but I would put rarity somewhere between 22-24, if that gives any kind of base.

Well, given those choices, I would have to go with "schizo."  But I do not think that Pinkie Pie is either.  I think that all of the mane six are in their 20s.

I figured they are maybe 18 or 16 through early 20's with Pinkie being among the younger ones since she's still going through training it seems.  Twilight maybe, or maybe she has been a book worm with little social interaction and she is going to college.  From the first episode some ponies seemed to know her and had a present for a pony having a birthday party.  Though she may have had no friends, or none she saw as friends in Canterlot.

Here's what I imagine. Rarity (22) Applejack (21) Twilight (20) Rainbow Dash (19) Fluttershy (18) Pinkie Pie (17)

 

Reasons.

 

Rarity acts the most "adult" and owns a job and is completely independent so I place her at 22

 

Applejack is the next in line at 21, she drinks a lot of cider and she must have tried SOME beer or something.

 

Next Twily at 20 she's almost at the top leagues college wise and is scared of being sent back.

 

Rainbow is next at 19, she acts rambunctious and feisty like a girl who's living the last of when she can get away with it at the end of adolescence.

 

Flutters is a year younger at 18. She is a bit younger than Dashie who was held back in my eyes. She wasn't that good of a flyer back then so I could say she was just younger. She also could have been picked on due to early growth spurt or something.

 

Pinkie, while you could say she has a job, is at the bottom at 17. She acts immature and lives with her adoptive parents or something. She also was the smallest in Call Of The Cutie like a 5 or 6 year old.

 

Anyway that's my opinion. Hope it was interesting

Okay, let's go over pony growth for a bit.  One of the youngest ponies we see on the show is Pipsqeak.  In Luna Eclipsed, this exchange occurs:

Pipsqueak: It's my first Nightmare Night.

Twilight: Since you moved here from Trottingham?

Pipsqueak: No, my very first Nightmare Night ever!

So not even a year old yet and Pip is already nearly 2 feet tall, able to talk coherently, and can even gallop.  However, Twilight thinks he's older than that.  Implying that either Pip is gifted or the difference between two-year-olds and one-year-olds isn't that significant.  Let's say Pip's age group is from 1-3.  Next major age group is the CMC age.  Since 2 or 3 years have gone by since season 1, and they were considered to be late in getting their cutie marks, that would mean the age group goes for 5-6 years (maybe longer).  There could be an age group between the two, but this gives us a minimum.  The mane six can't be less than 10 years old.

 

Now they are not much older than the CMC, for several reasons.  They are often referred to as "fillies", even though they are technically mares; Rainbow Dash won the Best Young Fliers Competition; and there's the fact that Applebloom and Sweetie Belle are younger sisters of two of the mane six.  So now we have a range.

 

Apple Family Reunion gives us some definite information.

Granny Smith: We've been hostin' these things at Sweet Apple Acres every hundred moons since we first planted roots here in Ponyville.

100 moons is 2800 days, or 7 years and about 8 months.  In a flashback of the same episode, we see baby AJ, who says a coherent sentence but is not as tall as Pipsqueak.  So she was easily less than a year old.  We know that can't be the previous reunion, because she can't be under 10 years old; but it's vastly unlikely to be three reunions ago.  Two reunions ago would be 15 years and 4 months ago.

Applejack: 16

Rainbow Dash said she was first in her year to get her cutie mark, while AJ said she was the last.  Rainbow Dash is probably close to two years younger than her.

Rainbow Dash: 14-15

Fluttershy is probably older than Rainbow Dash, as Dash has to remain first to get her cutie mark in her year.  Also, Fluttershy is easily the tallest in the flashback of Cutie Mark Chronicles.  She might be the oldest of the mane six.

Fluttershy: 16-17

Fluttershy said she's a year older than Pinkie Pie in Griffin the Brush Off, so that makes it very clear what Pinkie's age is.

Pinkie Pie: 15

Rarity also said she was among the last of her year to get her cutie mark.  Meaning she was near the same age as AJ.  She is also about the same size as AJ in the flashback.  I'd say she's the same age as AJ.

Rarity: 16

In the flashback, Twilight seems to be only a little bigger than Dash and Pinkie.  So I'd say she's a little older than the two of them.

Twilight Sparkle: 15-16

Ever means "in any way" or "at any time".  I never celebrated Halloween until I was 26.  That doesn't make Halloween '10 my first ever.

 

You could argue that the baby AJ flashback was 24 years ago, but only if you completely disregard Lauren Faust's thoughts on the matter:

In my "Head Canon," I still like to believe that they mature at the same rate as human beings and they are all over the age of 20.

 

But either way it pretty much amounts to the same thing.

I personally think this is my order:

• Rarity (she owns a store and has an adult-like personality and figure)
• Applejack (she's hardworking, dependent, works on a farm doing chores and doesn't mind that at all)
• Fluttershy 
• Twilight Sparkle
• Rainbow Dash
• Pinkie Pie (most likely to be the youngest in my book judging by the fact she's immature, childish and random)

I thought they were very young adults.  They all live alone, besides Pinkie Pie so she may actually be younger, and Apple Jack but she seems like an adult.  Twilight might be younger, too, but still an adult just based off her being right out of school and just now living on her own.  EG showed them as older high schoolers, but I really don't think they're all teenagers.  Rarity seems the oldest to me, then either Apple Jack or Fluttershy, then Rainbow Dash, then Pinkie Pie or Twilight.  

 

My guess is they're either 18-20ish, or the pony world allows older teens to be out on their own and they really are just high school age.

If memory serves me correctly, I said that their ages were around this:

Pinkie Pie - 15

Applejack - 15

Twilight Sparkle - 15

Rainbow Dash - 15

Rarity - 16

Fluttershy - 16

And yes, I still stand by it for a few reasons.

First of all, their ages have to be at most, one year apart from each other. This is because in Cutie Mark Chronicles, it was established that they were all fillies and got their cutie marks on the same day (nearly at the same time). Kids have the biggest height difference from year to year, so due to the fact that the filly versions of the mane 6 were each close in height (though not exactly the same height), their ages have to be pretty close together.

Second, and this is one of the most common and cliché arguments. Well, if they're under 18, then why do many of them have jobs and run businesses? Let me explain.

Equestria is a fantasy setting. And more than that, it has a big middle-ages theme to it. Sure, there's tech in the show (such as trains and records), but it's kind of downplayed when it comes to other aspects of the world, such as soldiers dressed in armor, instead of Kevlar and there being no automobiles. Here's why I bring this up.

In the middle-ages (actually, look at Lord of the Rings and D&D for good examples of this), it was common knowledge that when a child turned 13, they were recognized as an adult and went out to learn a trade. They may have still lived with their parents, but it was common to see 13 to 16-year-old boys working at a blacksmith, or girls of that age working at other jobs. That was just a thing back then. So it is possible, if not likely, that there are no set labor laws in Equestria for ponies that are under 18.

Knowing this, it is now much more logical to have them learning lessons. They may be considered by society to be adults even at 15 or 16, but they are not fully mature yet.

Finally, younger girls can better relate to younger protagonists. It's just simple logic. No matter how many older fans FiM has, at the end of the day it's still geared toward the younger demographic. It's a tough pill to swallow, but that's the kind of show FiM is.

It's hard to say, but I think that they would all be in the range of 18-25. In human years, of course.

 

From youngest to oldest,I would rank them as such:

 

Pinkie Pie (immature, lives in apartment, has parental figures)

Twilight Sparkle (still in college, hasn't quite developed social skills yet)

Rainbow Dash (has wild and fairly unrealistic hopes for the future)

Fluttershy (has a stable job and knows how to be polite in formal circumstances)

Applejack (runs a family business almost independently, is trusted by the town and society)

Rarity (completely independent, acts as a parental figure)

 

Pretty old response but i just want point out a few things:

 

Pinkie Pie is immature because its her destiny and cutie mark to make others laugh, you can't make others laugh by being mature or serious all the time and the Cakes are not her parental figures they are her employers who sometimes giver her advice. Twilight is the princesses student, i'd think she'd go to school longer than a normal pony would since she was being trained on being a princess after all. Rainbow Dash has showed time and time again her dream is no where near unrealistic. Fluttershy isn't really polite just so shy she doesn't want to draw attention to herself, we saw what she could do in "putting your hoof down". Applejack runs it with big mac and granny smith, but you said almost independently s that ones right. Rarity's is also right and you could add in she owns her own business.
