What did Luna while the canterlot wedding?

Invading the dreams of the writers, getting the details on the upcoming season at that time. She came back with some pretty sweet Intel I bet, but she didn't tell anyone. Why must she keep secrets away from us?! That or she is the one responsible for a lot of leaks within the show. New plot twist!

Luna was probably just sleeping. Though you'd think she would've attended an event as significant as a royal wedding.  Not sure why changelings didn't get to her and try to capture her in her sleep, though.

As Princess of the Night, Luna was probably asleep since she is active during the evening hours, though she did a pretty good job of not looking like she just got out of bed.

Kind of weird really. The last time Luna was seen was when she told Twilight to be careful while she was with the Royal Guards. Sure Luna sleeps in the day and works in the night taking over Celestia's shift but why would she sleep during the wedding of her niece?

Maybe because it is NOT "her" niece [only Celestia´s niece].

If we go by the (probably canonical) MLP book of Gillian M. Berrow "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell" ; Celestia first met Cadance [in the "Twilight Zone"], when she was ascending from pegasus to alicorn at some point after the banishment of Nightmare Moon and before the Sonic Rainboom [s1E23].

This means Cadance is not related by blood to Celestia, but instead is an "adopted niece" [the same way the unicorn prince Blue Blood is probably neither a relative to Celestia or Luna, but rather Princess Platinum].

Given the doubts Luna had about Celestia´s plans regarding Twilight in the next episode [the season 3 opener]; maybe she does not like the idea of having more alicorn princesses around (who could eventually dispute her current rule over the night and dreams, the same way she did with Celestia over all the sky centuries before).

Comics aren't canon

And it's still a pretty big event related to Princess Celestia in Canterlot which has gotten signs of being threatened by an assault. Luna who is much more traditional than Celestia sleeping on such occasion makes no sense.

It is from a book from the "Scholastic Book Fairs" publishing (SBF); not a comic from "Ideas and Design Works" (IDW).

It is part of the same series of official MLP books than "Ponypalooza Party!" (again by G.M.Berrow); referenced explicitly by its name on MLP:FiM by Twilight [about the participation of Pinkie Pie in the events], in the episode "The Mane Attraction" [s5E24].

The author (G.M.Berror) also wrote by herself (both script and teleplay) an episode of FiM in the same season: "The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows" [s5E19].

I am pretty sure those are in the same level of canonicity; rather than all of those "comercial fanfics" done by "comic writters" who had never worked for DHX in their lives [unavoidable prerequisite to ever read the "Bible of the Show" written by Lauren Faust and Amy Keating Rogers].

About Luna and the "danger":

Since he was charge of the security of Canterlot, Shining Armor probably choosed to raise the shield by his own judgement [rather than being a petition by Celestia or Luna, his superiors]. Based on some vague rumors about a non-specified "threat" he could not track to its source (in a way he was being a bridezilla too, trying to make his wedding to go perfectly).

The increase in soldiers both in the castle and around the barrier can be explained as an order from him (since he is the leader of the royal guard). This was probably against Celestia´s desire to mantain happy and un-worried the many (many) V.I.P. guests and general populace that will want to see the wedding.

If there was any indication of a SERIOUS menace, the wedding would had being postponed. Luna did help with her task of being "vigilant", watching from the tower with the telescope; but she was probably more concerned with the later "damage control" in the dreamworld after such party [even if we assume there would be no alcohol by royal decree], rather than managing activities in the waking world.

How does any of this explain Luna's importance in tradition being absent for a very traditional event in Canterlot of a wedding of her niece? Until it's described in the cartoon it will remain non-canon regardless of the author. The cartoon and the books/comics run on different continuity until information crosses over and is mentioned in the original source-the cartoon. You can tell me this is so in the Comics/Books whatever section but none of that is relevant to this conversation because this is the "SHOW" Discussion therefore nothing on the books or comics are canon until the show has shown this. So Cadance could have been an earth pony or unicorn before her alicornization not just pegasus.

If you're making a post right now the first statement I didn't express what I really was saying so read that before responding.

I thought she was handling the gift for their wedding. Remember the episode "Slice of life" where Luna said "I handled the gift for Cadence and Shining Armour"?

Yeah, perhaps she was busy getting the gift and was away from Canterlot when everything with Chrysalis went down. Would make sense why Chrysalis goes after her the second time with the rest of the Royal Family and Mane Six in To Where and Back Again.
