spoiler Was losing THE THING just as big as a shock as Golden Oak Library?

Not really, but that might have been because it featured prominently in the trailers that [Redacted] was going to be destroyed, whereas the destruction of Golden Oaks was kept a secret until the last second and came as a complete surprise. Plus the library had much more emotional significance since it had been Twilight's home for the last four seasons.

I'm not too devastated as I believe that

Spoiler

Despite the fact the Tree of Harmony has been destroyed, the Spirit of Harmony itself lives on and shall return in a form we've seen before.

No, besides the fact that the Tree getting destroyed was abundant in the previews, Discord’s speech towards the end showed they didn’t need the Tree or Elements, they had the Elements within themselves.

The Library getting destroyed was kept secret and has much more emotional significance than the Tree ever did

I couldn't care less. To this day I think that the tree wasn't a very good idea and now that it's gone, it really had no impact. The ma probably still works, the girls didn't need the elements since season five... I really don't care.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

Not really, to be honest. I mean, it was a great moment, but the destruction of the Tree of Harmony lacks the impact of the Golden Oaks Library being destroyed for two reasons:

1. It was featured frequently in the previews. Whereas the library's destruction was kept a secret.

2. The library had been a staple of the series for four seasons. It was Twilight's home and a hangout for the main characters since day 1. Meanwhile, the tree had been sporadically mentioned in Seasons 5-8.

I REALLY wish they didn't spoil this during the commercials. Just need to stop watching them when they come on. :mlp_yay:

We will probably find out that the 'Elements Of Harmony' were just cheap glass baubles and the girls had the power all along....

Regardless of already knowing that it happened, I hadn't freaked out this much since Tirek attacked. I don't think it was any one moment, though the tree getting smashed definitely freaked me out. The library in the end, wasn't a big deal. It's a building with books. Both can be replaced. Losing Harmony suggests far more dire repercussions that can't be easily fixed. But... it was this slow burn of panic running throughout.

I'm not entirely sure though if the episode would've had the same impact on me if I wasn't involved in the World Cup event. I think I developed a subconscious fear of Grogar before this season even started.

@Jeric I blame you for this :-P

I didn't find the destruction of the library as impactful as everyone else did, so I'd say they were about the same. Twilight's connection to the library was more personal, but it wasn't a sentient being like the tree is.

No. Unlike the library, it just felt shallow and meaningless because that was exactly how much the show make us care about it and put effort into it.

And the elements faked their death since season 1 premiere. The tree of harmony feels meaningless as much as those gleaming light pillars or energy cubes from bland superhero blockbuster movies.

Not really, "that thing" feels extremely impersonal that I don't feel any connection with "that thing"  on the same level as the Golden Oaks library where Twilight had spent several years of her life.

Meanwhile "that thing" enjoys to torment student 6, so I don't see how I am supposed to sympathize with "that thing". "That thing" even stole Twilight Sparkle's identity because it didn't bother to create her own OC.

Is this to much?
