science Why do so many people fantasize about homosexual romance of their opposite sex?

I wonder why there are so many gay romance material targeted towards the opposite sex consumer? (gay fiction for women, lesbian pornography for men)

Come to think of this, even I consume those material or fantasize about them, but I don't know exactly why. I could easily presume the reason behind a heterosexual person fantasizing themselves being with the other sex, or a homosexual person being with the same sex. Those are pretty much self explanatory. But why would someone fantasize about two homosexual people that has no business with the person imagining? (maybe some people does fantasize about those couple also having a business with themselves, I don't know.) Can someone give me some reasonable explanations and thoughts about this?

I came up with some hypothesis.

  1. A satisfaction from observing two people who are both attractive to you.
  2. A tendency of excluding any presence of the same sex person in the fantasy.
  3. An expectation of having both of them (they are bisexual).
  4. "I'd like to have an orgy but I'm not gay."
  5. "I can empathize with both of them, and whatever happens between them, the effect is double."
  6. A countermeasure for the case when your harem turns into a battleground, and you are too fainthearted to handle it.

From what I've gathered on the issue, it of course is most generally a thing of heterosexuals (and never of homosexuals for obvious reasons). and the aspect that's fantasized about is actually different from person to person. For women fantasizing about two men hooking up (It's creepy, but I will admit ever so slightly flattering. Plus, it produces some very intriguing fanart), it's mostly the romantic part of it. For men fantasizing about two women it's mostly the sexual part. I think you've given what I would think the best explanations of this would be. I would particularly accept explanations 1 and 5, as they seem like the most reasonable explanations. Seeing this from the perspective of a gay male, I really have a hard time explaining it.

I don't think the rules to this only apply to homosexual couples being fantasies of hetero. Surveys have shown that even the anti-homosexual crowd can enjoy watching them do the deed. A lot of the erotic content out there is enjoyed by people who would never enjoy actually actually being in that situation. Probably the most surprising one is the forced/sexual assault fantasy. And while the most logical assumption is that all the people who watch/read that genre would all be aggressive men, surveys show it's common enough to be worth noting that women have fantasies about being on the receiving end. But in a fantasy none of the dangers of the real-life encounter exist, and in a fantasy you can be a completely different kind of person, or an entirely different creature. I suspect it's probably not all that different from other forms of entertainment. For instance, we know there are SCORES of people who play violent video games, but have zero desire to actually hurt anyone.

I don't really get it. I always thought of porn being a sort of fantasy that people could at least subconsciously place themselves in. If you're watching two people of the same gender who have zero attraction to your gender do it, I don't see how that could be erotic for you. I mean, unless they're both exceptionally attractive idk

Who knows what’s going on their head, that’s their business.  But I certainly don’t because I’m not a dickhead.

Interesting topic.  I am just strictly hetero irl, but I have all sorts of... I guess you'd say pansexual fantasies.  Sexuality's really complex.  I think it's pretty normal and natural to have all sorts of fantasies like this, and I think that your reasons 1-5 are pretty spot on.  Not sure about reason 6, though.
