general media Do/Have You Ever Used The Scene Selection Feature On A DVD?

Just something I'm curious about. How many of you have ever actually used the 'scene selection' feature on most DVDs. I honestly don't think I ever have, even as a kid when I would look through every menu page to look for easter-eggs :adorkable:

I think I did it sometimes as a little kid watching the original Spider-Man films.

I remember the original Spider-Man movie having an infamously long opening credits sequence. I grew up with a DVD player without a remote so I had no way to skip through it :okiedokieloki:

Some of the best opening credits I've ever seen.

I kind of miss the 2004 Star Wars Original Trilogy DVD box sets as as well as how the Star Wars prequels menus were made back in those days.

when you go to the menu it will randomly choose one of the three different planets and will base the menus around that location.

for example in The Empire Strikes Back, you might land on Cloud City. The Scene Selection menu will be Luke Skywalker battling Darth Vader in the Carbonite Freezing Room.

Odd number pages contains Vader standing menacingly;

Even number pages feature Luke and Darth Vader exchanging Saber hits.

And there's even a brief transition going on from moving between pages:

Odd page to an even page: Luke approaches Vader and ignites Saber

odd page to an even page: Vader knocks Luke offscreen with an "All too easy"

from an odd to a different odd page: A piece of machinery operates in the side foreground

from an even page to a different even page: Luke attempts an stronger Saber attack which Vader blocks

They actually put in a little action or motions in the menus back then.

It apply to all the Star Wars DVD that were released in the early 2000s. And honestly that the one thing I miss when I got the 2011 Blu-ray version. There's only one location floating in blackness with images flashing across the screen. No effort to randomized the menus and give reasons to go exploring

I do miss when DVDs had that kind of personality to their menus. Recently I watched the Chronicles of Riddick where before playing you choose to side with either the Furians or the Necromongers which I thought was really cute :mlp_laugh:

I've done it plenty of times, mainly to just find a scene that I want to watch.

I'll literally never understand this when I want to do that I just play it from the beginning and skip I never use scene selection

I haven't used it personally (I have sometimes used an episode select screen cause I sometimes fall asleep halfway through or something like that)

I've only ever seen a scene selection used by a teacher though

Are DVDs still used  ? Maybe I just buy online too often nowadays.

Yes, if I have to take out the disk in the middle of the movie or something. I didn’t know some people haven’t had to do that.

I remember using it a few times! Usually when we had already watched part of the movie but had to stop halfway through. When we would start it back up, we'd use the scene selection to get there faster!

I sometimes use the Scene Selection if I’m interrupted during the movie and have to shut things off until I can return. Or sometimes, if the dvd has a smudge on it and malfunctions, which usually results in my dvd player spitting out the disc, I have to go to Scene Selections to find where I was because the player doesn’t always remember where I left off.

Every single time I watched The Two Towers or Return of the King, because I always skip the parts with Frodo in them. Yeah, I know, he's the main character, I just don't care about him. So I use the scene selection to start at the right scene, and then the chapter-skip feature to skip those parts of the movies.

That's a pretty unique reason! Not gonna lie though I often feel like skipping those parts myself but I like Gollum too much.

A few times. Not that often, but a few times. Depends on the situation.

The most notorious reason for using it is when I have to stop in the middle of a movie, because my attention is needed elsewhere. I might not return immediately, and therefore have to turn off the DVD/Bluray/etc player. Sometimes, I might not even be back til the next day. People have busy lives sometimes, but if you remember where you left off, you can get right back into it.

Other times, I might select a certain scene because that's all I want to see. There have been plenty of times where I want to find a certain clip from an anime I like, but it's not posted on YouTube (or maybe it is, but it's sub only, and I really wanted to see the dub). That, or something else that's just as annoying, like it's only available in a terrible quality or something.

And I've never posted in any formal reviews of stuff on YouTube or anywhere else, but there have been times where I did it for school, for fun, or other reasons. And while I was familiar with the movie/tv show/etc., I still wanted to re-watch specific scenes just for research purposes. If I wanted the entire episode/movie/all the cutscenes/etc., then I'd just get lost in it. Research would be forgotten, and I'd just be having fun again. :please:
