music Chip's Chiptune Tread

Count Paradox

Recommended Posts

Hey, Chip here (At least that's what my gaming friends call me), and I thought, seeing as we already have a metal thread (thank you Crispy), I was wanting to put up some chiiptunes or 8-bit game music up here for my peeps to jam to. I've loved this type of music for as long as I could hold a game controller, and I just thought that I should share the chippy love! Here's something to start us off, a little Anamanaguchi!!!

You might be asking...what the hell is a chiptune?

Well let me not tell you and just copy from wikipedia...

A chiptune, also known as chip music or 8-bit music, is synthesized electronic music often produced with the sound chips of vintage computers, video game consoles, and arcade machines, as well as with other methods such as emulation

I know there are a couple of you around here who know about this...well it's not even a genre, it's just an unusual choice for instruments. I'd really like to know if you are into this at all, and maybe share a couple of your favourites from games, or original compositions as well!

I'd like to start of with a track that literally made me cry the first time listening...  (now if you're not used to these sounds, you might wanna turn down your volume, just sayin')

And an other favourite of mine, with a really unusual bass instrument for its system. (not gonna bore you with the technical details haha)

Oh God...I'm such a nerd...

A little bit.

Some chiptune music sounds amazing, but others in my opinion just sound annoying as hell. I do feel like it is slightly underrated, although I highly doubt it'll become mainstream and will be playing on the radio anytime soon. I really don't know any good chiptune artists. :(

I'd suggest searching for Tim Follin's work, or Jeroen Tel's. Those two made the best things back in the day, but really, it depends on what kind of sound is not annoying to you. To me, a chiptune doesn't mean slapping a bunch of these synthesized sounds on top of real instruments, but that's just me.

I clicked on this, thinking, if by chiptunes you mean like Alvin and the Chipmunks singing 'I'm a Single Lady' in their annoying little chipmunk voices with their annoying little chipmunk faces, I'm going to jump out of this window while wringing their annoying little chipmunk necks. But no! I freaking love 8-bit music!

8-bit!

I would go back and play my old gameboy games, sometimes, just to hear the 8-bit music. This kind of music is just amazing, altogether. Because it takes real effort to pull it off well. And because it gives me the feels right in the nostalgia.

If you follow this, there's all kinds of 8-bit pony music. It's mind-blowing.

Oh yeah...it might be a good idea to add 8-bit to the thread title to avoid further confusion. But I'm usually referring to it as chiptune because 8-bit refers to just mostly the NES,Master System, Gameboy and C64, but there are also the 16-bit systems , SNES,Genesis Turbografx16 (which isn't a "true" 16-bit console but whatever) as well.

But anyway, nice to know you love this stuff!

Pretty much anything by Kitsune^2, I like. Even if the albums are an absolute nightmare to get due to being removed from most everywhere. I had to do a ton of digging to get "I Kinda Really Want To Make Love To You".

Young, Incredible, Free, and Fly. That's how Veronica rolls.

I actually try my best to make all sorts of music. I don't know what I specialize in right now, but I try to do everything I can. :3

I am testing out on how to do some chiptunes right now. Probably will make a couple and also I have to because I'm creating songs for a video game. I will be sure to post some here or on my SoundCloud once I got some ready.

I'm not the greatest person in any kind of music yet. I'll try to find my own speciality next time. :3

I really like Chiptune as a fusion, as opposed to a stand alone genre. mind.in.a.box released a fantastic album in homage to oldschool video games and gaming systems, and I think they blended in Chiptune/8bit elements into their music really well.

@,

Hi there, just so you know, Octavia's Hall is for user created works only. As such, I've moved your post over to this one in Media Discussion where it belongs. :)

There were actually two chiptune topics out there, so I merged those two together as well.

I love chiptunes, sadly enough I just don't run into them enough (or look for them hard enough). I just can't get enough of those crisp square waves and you know I like to hear a modern tune in a chiptune remix.

Cladun X2 had a soundtrack that featured an 8-bit version of each track. I think that is pretty cool.

Here's the 8-bit version of the title song: Call of Dungeon

And here's a 16-bit version of Blinded by Light (Final Fantasy XIII's battle theme):

Don't let this thread die guys.

I like listening to chip tune music, but I'd not be one to make chip tune music. Instead, I'm teaching myself to make EDM. Wish me luck with Logic and MASSIVE! Now to come up with an artist name that isn't taken already. R3WiND (my default internet alias) is taken, Renegade is taken, now it's time to come up with fictional words. (Tip, I like the letters R, F and V a lot, but no V without an emphasised R or F. Has to do with my synesthesia. Don't ask.)

Anyways, my favourite chip tune is this one, due to the sheer intensity and chaos fit into a chiptune:

I don't really like posting back to back like this, but... here's two remixes:

Awakening the Chaos

The song really starts at 40 seconds; the beggining is part of another track that acts sort of as a boss intro. Awakening the Chaos is my favorite theme from the Blazblue series. It sounds just as good in chiptune form. Here's the original for those who are curious.

Severe Person

It's a song from the Melty Blood games (they have a pretty good soundtrack all around too). And, once again, here's the original for those who are curious.
