Overrated/Underrated Characters?

Most of the well known background characters. Derpy, Octavia, Vinyl, Lyra, Bonbon...

 

I don't dislike them so much as the fanatical fanbases they get. Characters like Octavia, who has a grand total of about two minutes screentime, get blown way out of proportion.

 

Vinyl is one of the lighter end of the spectrum for me: at least shes a character that gets a little focus from time to time, even if it isnt much.

 

I cant bring myself to hate Colgate though, I'm a hypocrite.

I find Bon Bon as a pretty overrated character, I know she is popular but I never really understood her at all. I guess any of the background characters can become popular.

Overrated characters? I'd have to say, Rainbow Dash, especially in shippings. I'm sorry to you RD fans out there, she just doesn't suit me. Every shipping with Rainbow in it is popular. I just don't get it. I like her and all, but not as much as anyone else.

Actually scratch that. I am completely indifferent to the existence of Derpy, but I bang my head on the wall everytime someone brings up that issue. You know what I mean.

Sweet Celestia, she is very overrated. I never liked her to begin with and that whole incident that went down made me dislike her even more. She is so bland and dull when compared to all the other colorful and vibrant ponies.

The main characters, popular secondary characters, and popular background characters (i.e., Twilight, Luna, Applejack, Derpy, Lyra, Discord, Dr. Whooves, Rainbow Dash, Celestia, Rarity, Vinyl, Flim Flam Brothers, Steven Magnet, Trixie, Spike, Shining Armor, Scootaloo, whoever) are well-liked for several reasons, and almost all of them are rather good ones. They deserve the big fanbases they have, and claiming a character as overrated is plain daft.

Since she's the "coolest" pony most fans think that she's objectively the only one that "manly men" like themselves should like, Flutterfans are the exact opposite of that but still, I truly dislike that mindset.

 

Besides Dash, I feel like Discord, Vinyl and Octavia are painfully overrated. Hell two of them aren't even characters, they're just in the background. Not even the background, they just showed up a few times.

Derpy, of course. She's adorable, fun, and amusing, but waaaay overdone. Her hype is way too extreme for my liking. It annoyed me how at one point on this forum there were so many topics asking "Did Hasbro Kill Derpy?" I honestly wouldn't really care if they stopped using her as an Easter egg/Waldo character. She's not that important.

I guess we all have different opinions on whose overrated. Such as for me, I don't think much of Lyra or DJ pon3/Vinyl Scratch. However my friend just loves them. As for Derpy first I loved her, however overtime with all the issues surrounding her  I just started to care less about her. However that just my opinion.

Eh, I think a lot of characters are overrated. But I love all of the overrated characters, so I can't say anything.  But all of the background ponies are overrated. But I love the backstories the fandom gives them. That's one of the things that drew me into the fandom in the first place! But, yeah, they are all overrated. Derpy, Vinyl, Lyra, Bon-Bon, Octavia, GAK, you know, all those things that make this fandom the awesomeness it is.

 

And yes, I did include GAK in that list. Don't question me.

I'm sorry, but I'm gonna respectfully disagree. Background characters have literally done nothing to earn any kind of love. There's nothing wrong with liking the background characters, maybe you like their design? Maybe they did something funny looking on screen? But the lengths some fans go for background ponies is ridiculous. It was sad to see the fandom forget about Applejack in her own episode simply because Derpy spoke

Underrated: Discord.

Overrated: Fluttershy, though she's still my favorite pony. I suppose one could include AppleJack or Rarity, but I fail to see them as overrated.

Discord: A blithering child being given the powers of a god does not make the best villain. I don't dislike Discord, I just think that people kiss up to him way too much. 

 

Luna/Nightmare Moon: Ugh, the Luna fanboys nip at my heels. All I see when I look at Luna is a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum over nothing because she's an attention whore. To put it mildly, Luna is the 4 year old toddler who smashes your computer to get more attention. She's an interesting character but the way everyone justifies the actions of a genocidal brat annoys me

 

Derpy: Not that interesting and has no personality(Saying muffin does not mean their life revolves around it!)

 

Trixie: Similar to Luna, the way fans justify her actions is ridiculous. If she had some charm, like Iron Will or Hercule from DBZ, she could get away with being an insufferable, arrogant, tool. But no, she just talks in the third person and does nothing remotely funny or clever to make me like her. Unlike Luna, Trixie is not an interesting character and is as generic a bully as you can get. Even Diamond Tiara is better, if only for showing off some level of sadism

Rainbow Dash, yes I know she's one of the Main 6, but they make way to many RD episodes. I would sadly also have to state Pinkie... NOT because I hate her, I don't hate any of the main 6, but I do think they use her a bit to much as well.

All the ponies: Because somepony will dislike him/her. (uuh... I just felt like saying this... I mean... if this thread would continue for say, 100 pages, we would probably have someone mention EVERY single pony in the entire series at some point).

I like Trixie mostly because the colour combination, to be honest she's a pretty flat pony, I mean the personality, as she's just a background pony they haven't given us much of her personality, the way she acts could very well be a side effect of her having a bad self esteem, and therefore tries to hide that by acting as she does.

I don't know about any ponies in particular that I would say would be "overrated"...

Don't shoot me. These are my opinions, and I love all the characters I list. They're all awesome. K.

 

1. Rainbow Dash: I love her, but I just can't see why she's as popular as she is. She's the frontline of the fandom, and gets showered in love, but people will complain about my best pony when she has similar flaws. I love RD, but it just doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. Like, none. Zilch. Nada. Zip. Zed. Nothing. 

 

2. Luna: I can see why people would like her, and go as far as to call her "best princess" but I just can't see best pony. Meh. I love her too, though, but I can't see what she's done to get showered in love and kissed up too so much.

 

3. Twilight Sparkle: Honestly, this is just in show. I think the show would work better if it wasn't centered around Twi and it was all of the mane 6. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, not My Little Pony: Twilight is Magic. I mean, they'll throw her into episodes where she has no use. Come on.

 

Hmmmmm....yeahh, that's pretty much all I have to say here

 

Oh! I see underrated too! Here we go:

 

1. Applejack: Applejack is awesome. I love Applejack. She does so many good things, is probably the most mature of the mane 6, but damn, she gets so little love from the fandom. I mean, she doesn't get hate, but gahhhhhhh. She's no doubt the most underrated character.

 

2. Rarity: Of course I was gonna say this. Let's face it: she gets criticized and stomped on for having similar flaws to my #1 most overrated character. I've met people who are scared to admit that she's their best pony because of stuff like this. Total. Bull. Anyway, she'll get demonized for having flaws people love RD for. Well maybe not the same flaws, but on similar levels. I'm glad to see her have such a boost in popularity as of late

 

Honestly, I put Rarity on there because I do feel she's underrated, but AJ is by far the most underrated. Just thought I'd point that out. She's a mile ahead of Rar in the underrated category.

Derpy. I really just irks me that a pony that became popular just because she has cross-eyes is just ridiculous. The fandom also completely backs-up and canonizes her 'personality' even though arguably 80% of it is fan-made, and they even put her place with the mane six very often. Why, fandom, why? D:
