Opinions on swearing

I believe that there is nothing wrong with swearing if it is used to make a point. But if someone is just saying swear words every other word just for no reason, then it is pretty stupid and annoying.

Hey, it's a really useful tool of expression. I mean, it's widely understood by the English speaking community and can convey exactly what you're trying to say. I say go use it. It makes me sound classy and sophisticated.

But in all seriousness, say whatever fucking thing you want.

Aww come on. You know I was going to say it. How could I not say it? It was so predictable.

And for those of you who go the extra mile and think about my reasons for saying what I said, the above still applies.

And for those of you who go the extra mile and think about my reason for my reasons for saying what I said, the above still applies.

And for those of you - oh screw this.

This one is a tad less creepy. Wouldn't you agree?

It's quite understandable to despise swearing on the excessive level, but i must admit, my language isn't always 100% pure. This is Probably due to the fact that my friends swear so much its hard not to go along with them. Of course, I never swear around other people or family.

I curse lots... Lots and lots and lots. If you play Xbox Live with me, you'll might get an earful of swears, but only if I am aggravated. Otherwise I am the calm collected person that I usually am.

I also want to point out that swears are only bad because society marks them as bad, which I think is pretty f#king stupid.

I don't really care about swearing and I think many people take it way too seriously. As long as it's not every other word, and as long as you don't mean anything bad towards someone with the swearing, I don't have a problem with it.

What I meant was, I don't like swearing at all, though I have a problem with letting loose when I'm upset. When someone's upset/angry/annoyed then I suppose the occasional F-Bomb is O.K, when it is used to express oneself within context and not excessively, I s'pose it is O.K, but not O.K when it is used as every-day language and to the excess...

It's not polite to use foul language and never really is appropriate ever. I swear very often, but I'm not saying it to present my awesome manners. Swearing to some, is just good for relieving stress. It could represent how your manners may be. However, your just judging someone if you just narrow your thoughts like that.

Yeah, my wife does the same to me, though I'm getting better with not swearing (especially around the kids), whenever I do, she just looks at me weird (though I only swear when I'm upset, angry or annoyed, and I usually if not ALL the time, say "excuse my language" or "sorry about that" when I do swear....) She also understands that because of my disability, it is going to be difficult for me to get out of the habit of swearing....

I believe that swearing is just for attention and is not necessary. Sometimes people swear just to be "cool", which is one of the biggest fallacies ever. To be cool is to be yourself. To swear is to be disrespectful and hurt others and to be low. Even if used in as an interjection, there are still better ways to say things.

Well honestly I don't tend to use swear words ever If I can avoid it, mostly because it is rude in my opinion and not appropriate for use most of the time.

I don't really care if people use them every so often, but I personally don't. Only time I really ever use any is when I'm really mad, and even then I try not to totally blow my fuse and go off throwing F bombs everywhere.

but I think we can all agree that people who constantly curse all day everyday for no reason at all are just plain annoying >_>.

Let me compare speaking with cooking.

Swear words are like hot spices or hot sauce. Sometimes, a dish needs a kick. Obviously you don't mix sweet with spicy, because then you and especially the person you are cooking for gets confused. You only use it for certain meals or when you need to warm yourself up. Some people like really spicy dishes, while others not at all. Sometimes if someone is very sensitive to spices, when cooking for them don't add any.

Know the person you are cooking for. Know the person you are talking to. Cook/speak accordingly.

I apologize if I've confused people with my opinion being a little all over the place. I believe it is a part of my disability and well my want of being accepted and liked and not hated... I can be very strongly minded/opinionated on a few topics (i.e religion/belief/faith) due to my strong convictions on it and due to my disability....

There is a few different ways to look at a topic such as this. First way you can look at this is just like most things, everything has a time and a place and a purpose. Now the type of swearing that is toward a object or just in plain humor may be more tolerable than swearing toward a person or swearing just to be ignorant.

The second way you could look at it is that swear words are just words and everyone has the right to use them, but just as I said earlier, there is a time and place for such things. A example would be you wouldn't usually say "smurf" when something hurt, you would swear or maybe even create a sentence full of swear words, but if swear words are just words, another word could replace them, supposedly. And others said, swearing is also a way to express a feeling in writing and in movies and so on.

But when it comes to people who swear just to be a buckethead & ignorant then that is where I draw the line, just because some folks only contain a vocabulary filled with such language they think it should be used to compensate for a valid argument.

The final thing you could add to this is why swearing seems to be so "cool" per say, It's probably like anything that you can't do at a younger age, everyone wants to swear or drive, drink etc, etc when there young and when adult figures aren't around people take advantage of what they can say and thus the demand to swear is brought to life. A example that I can think of would be drinking, some teenagers drink their little hearts out when it's illegal to, and then for a while after they are allowed to, but then it slows down, just like when you get something new and you use it and use it and then you get bored and your all like "eh, who cares" and that's all she wrote.

But I guess the real question is about if I approve of swearing, well personally I don't care what other people do, but I don't necessarily swear, the most swearing I do is when I do my Hank Hill impression of the phrase "Dammit Bobby". Usually I don't think of a person in a lesser way if they swear unless it's in a un-orderly form and doesn't make sense, hence ignorance.

In conclusion, just like Grandpap always said: "If you can't say it to your Grandma-maw, you shouldn't say it at all" (And depending on Grandma-maw's tolerance for "foul language" much could be said.) That's basically my point here, the bar is lowered by those you are around, if you want to raise the bar, you have to change the whole group. (metaphorically speaking)

One time earlier this year when I was home from college, I was driving home from a movie with my younger brother. We decided to try and think of a cuss word for every letter of the alphabet. This is gist of the list, with no cheating from the internet:

I agree with Party Cannon's cooking metaphor. To me, swearing is fine as long as it's not directed at anybody.

I've never understood the whole "if you swear, you have a low vocabulary/are an idiot" thing.

I have a pretty decently sized vocabulary, and I swear quite often, depending on the company. Anybody who's had a legitimate discussion with me on this site will (most likely) agree that I'm intelligent and know how to say things clearly.

I use it for exaggeration; because society labels them as "bad" words, using them correctly helps convey that you are particularly passionate on a certain subject. Excessive swearing does, however, usually end up making you look stupid because you are adding unnecessary emphasis, as well as making it mean less when you actually are swearing legitimately.

I do sometimes swear excessively for comedic effect. It really can add when done well*.

While I do believe words are words I feel like it isn't okay if you use them when you're talking about someone or if someone's talking about you.

I have been guilty of this many times, but I'm trying to be better about it.

I do not like to swear and I find it difficult to respect people who use swearwords way too often. I cannot escape the fact that I sometimes swear too but i do prefer not to. In my mind it is just a way to express strong emotions. Like sudden anger, sudden pain or the likes of such. It is for me at least. There are not always strong enough words to express such strong emotions and therefore some slightly taboo words are used, as they seem to have more power than usual words. That is at least what I think.

Swearing I believe is only acceptable in certain circumstances. If you nailed your finger than yes a swear word ot two is fine, but I don't like when people go to public places where kids are and someone is just cussing every word from the book for no real reason.

My general rule has always been, largely because of my upbringing, to avoid swearing as best as I can, and I generally do a good job at it. However, a guy does need to vent his frustration somehow every once in awhile, or if anything at least have a word to fall back on; before I came to this fandom, I'd used freakin' for years, but honestly, even I found it to be quite annoying (because let's be honest, freakin' is an annoying and very juvenile sounding word). Once I discovered this fandom, however, I also began discovering some of the terms coined by the fandom, and one I've particularly latched onto is buck/bucked/bucking. While it's only a letter away from the queen mother of all swears, there's just something very endearing to it about me, and it always feels like both (1) an appropriate way to express myself when either mad or excited, etc., and (2) like it's not inappropriate. I guess in some ways it's like that term that they used on the new Battlestar Galactica, ummm, fracking, that's it, as their replacement for the F-bomb. It's close, and you know what it's implying, but at the same time it still isn't THAT word, and that's what I love about it. Admittedly, there are some posts where I'll just say to myself, "Did I use buck just a little too much in that post?" but overall, I don't think I use it in excess too much. But honestly, using a replacement word like that is a great way to prevent oneself from dropping the real doozies, so I've really come to appreciate buck, and, by extension, the fandom in general for coining the term in the first place. Just another reason why I love MLP!!! B)

Granted, I think swearing is annoying when it is used nearly every second word.

Other then that, I see curses as just another word. I find it stupid that people get so sore over it.

As the saying goes,

"Sticks and stones may brake my bones, but words will never hurt me" (a complete lie,but that's the saying)
