It's sad when someone can't get over the misconceptions of the show and see how awesome it really is.  There was a time when I thought it was weird, now I'm a Brony and have tons of pony stuff.  I find it's a nice balance in my life.  I've always been into guns, racing and other typical manly stuff.  When I got into a career dealing with the worst people have to offer, death and violence on a daily basis, I started watching the show to escape.  It hasn't made me less of a man, in fact It put me in a better state of mind at the end of the day.

 

Hang in there and maybe just keep it to yourself more until you move out on your own.

What kind of fiction does he like? If he likes horror spring Silent Ponyville on him, or Creeping Darkness. Those are both better then some published horror I've seen.

I would not use Cupcakes, it's dark, but's a childish and immature "OMG LOK AT ALL TEH AWSOME GORE" dark. It really has no substance or plot.

The only thing my parents asked me upon telling them I watched MLP is if I was gay, and of course, I said no.

I think they did pick on me about it once by picking me up a McDonalds happy meal with a girl's toy at the time when they had MLP toys. (In my defense, I asked for a big mac.)

I just ended up taking the toy and fries and gave the rest to my little sister.

 

it's not good when even your own parents mock at you or consider you gay for watching/doing things MLP related! Best is/safest is hide your interests from the wide public, less trouble.

Maybe your parents just need to realize how big the community really is. There's literally thousands, even hundreds of thousands of people, just like you, some even older, that enjoy MLP:FiM. If that many older viewers love the show, it can't possibly be as girly and childish as your father thinks it is. I'm not saying you should try to get him to join the herd or anything, I'm just saying that it may help him rationalize why you like the show in the first place. It's not the same as the My Little Pony he might remember from decades ago. Hang in there!

*sighs* yes, that would be his reaction. Nearly spot-on at that. The reason I've found is that they showed me one, let me emphasize that further, ONE article that was composed of nothing but slander towards the brony community, saying things like, "really? males are liking this show?" but with a negative connotation. The best part is that my parents said the website was a "reliable source". I've tried to find the article using Google just now, but can't find it to show you, but I assure you it was nothing but bull crap.

 

I'd flat out tell them it's pure bullshit. I mean even if they don't believe you you really need to make your voice heard, that is, if you value yourself at all.

I explained how a lot of bronies are hated and I showed her this thread and she couldn't believe some people could lack so much understanding. So you have some sympathy from my parents too.

 

If you're talking to your father and trying to reason with him, you can use me as an example if you like. I'm in my twenties, I have a university degree and I'm a sensible, rational person. I'm not that different, I don't think, from a lot of the bronies and pegasisters here. It's just a tv show, and all sorts of people can like it. It's a cartoon with humour and morals and lots of people can appreciate it and enjoy watching it.

My mom was a bit surprised and said the game was "nasty", but that I'm "old enough to play what I want." Okay then, so they're perfectly fine with me playing an M rated game involving killing people because I'm "old enough", but they don't want me watching an innocent cartoon popular with many males my age (albeit none of them are friends of mine, but I'll work on that)? I don't even...how do you respond to that? No, really, how?

I think it's very bizzare that he would approve of you engaging in a stimulous for ending human life, but disapproves of you engaging in stimulous around colourful happy horse animations.

 

I hope you know that you have all our support. I think your dad needs to actually think about this for what it is, rather than what he wants to think it is. Until then, they will never get off your case.

It's a sad day when the expected form of entertainment is violence and bloodshed over something that promotes friendship and caring. I think what you need to do is find people who have become greatly famous and are doing something very, very good, to demonstrate that being a brony affected them in a good way, or maybe even neither.

 

One example, is the famous brony musician, Mandopony. He was hired by the FIM crew to WORK THERE. In other words, the inspiration that the show brought him to make his music, that was FIM inspired, his well connections with Michelle Creber and her family (she's Applecloom's VA and Sweetie Belle's singing voice by the way), AND his talent, got him a JOB. NO ONE can disapprove THAT. Especially since he now can work with people who worked on shows that he probably saw in his childhood. Lots of dreams there I can assure you.

 

Or famous brony MictheMicrohone, who worked with previous FIM writer Amy Keating Rogers to make a song for a DISNEY MOVIE. And hosts a lot of the charity things going around.

 

Or a LOT of the bronies who have used ponies, for school projects, and actually aced those projects. And also, for example, heard of Double Rainboom, the first fan created episode? The guy who is the director, producer and writer for that project, is doing it to approve his class of animation for his UNIVERSITY. And if it actually works, he'll approve his year.

 

All that should mean something to your parents. And if it doesn't...then I don't really know what else I can do.

You are in a delicate situation being 17. Living at home you kind of have to play by their rules as they are supplying you a place to stay rent free. Maybe play it a little down around them, and when you move out and get your own place then you can do what you want. I feel for you man as I went through the same thing with my parents and TMNT.
