It's time(finally) for the sixth in my series of analyses. Our subject today? Fluttershy.

After Twilight, Fluttershy is probably the pony amongst the Mane Six I identify with most, because she lives up to her name so well. But like with almost every character on this show, Fluttershy has a lot more depth to her than just being "the shy one."

It starts with her foalhood, as always. We've gotten very little information about her life in Cloudsdayle, other than that she seemed to have been born there and lived there for her entire life prior to the day of the Sonic Rainboom, or at least lived in the clouds in general. She specifically states in the episode that she'd never been so close to the ground before, something that doesn't surprise me, given how she was such a weak flier. Being fairly weak made her easy prey for bullies--something I think we can all understand to a certain extent, especially me--and probably led to some resentment on her part. And while she might have been rescued from being bullied, it quickly led to something that could have easily killed her: her fall from Cloudsdayle.

I've often thought about this event and just how shocking it seems to me. Not the fall itself, but what the fall and the events afterwards implies about Cloudsdayle and about Fluttershy's family life. While it makes sense that the racers couldn't see her fall, since she fell only after they passed, everyone else could have seen her fall quite easily. She span around for several seconds and made quite a lot of noise while doing so, something that would have caught someone's attention. Then she fell, and not only does no one go after her, but no one comes after her in the large amount of time she spends on the ground afterwards. If it had not been for that lucky swarm of butterflies, Fluttershy would have DIED. What kind of flying society like the Pegasi of Cloudsdayle doesn't have provisions or security measures of some sort to watch out for this sort of thing? Even if everypony else her age was a super good flier, the fact that Fluttershy wasn't and that this had to have been a known quantity means she should have had someone watching her at all times, to make sure this exact kind of thing didn't happen. But she didn't, and no one showed up after she landed either. In fact, according to the events of the episode, it can easily be assumed that no one went after her ever, and that she moved to Ponyville without ever looking back at Cloudsdayle. Admittedly, there's no real proof of that apart from what is implied, but what is implied shocks me to the core. Why did that happen the way it did?

I'm going to go off on some serious speculation here, speculation that will probably result in me eating my words when an episode that deals with Fluttershy's family eventually comes around, but I speculate that she had a very bad family life. Either she had parents that simply didn't care that much about her, or else she was orphoned at a young age and lived at an orphonage with many other Pegasi foals. In either case, the life she lived up to the day of the race was tragic and filled with very little love and kindness. While I highly doubt she suffered actual abuse at the hands of her parents/guardians, she definitely suffered significant amounts of neglect, left on her own and to her own devices, picked on by others her age, seeing little real joy in life. It's no wonder that, as a result, she has so little self-confidence and is so shy; she has no reason to be otherwise, given that her life was nothing but disaster after disaster. And yet...and yet, she didn't become bitter and hateful. On the contrary, Fluttershy has lived up to her role as the Element of Kindness so well that she had to be outright mindwarped by Discord in order to become cruel.

Why? Well, I think it harkens back to how, as with the rest of the Mane Six, she is in many ways the spirit of the Element of Kindness. She may very well have been born to become its representative, and thus that saved her from turning into a hateful, vengeful shell of a pony that she so easily could have been. Or it could simply be that she has an inner core of strength, a will, a resolve that makes her unshakable, a pillar that can be relied upon to be who she is no matter what horrible circumstances she's forced into. I like to think it's a combination of both, that part of why she has that strength is that she's the spirit of the Element of Kindness, but also that she was molded by her life experiences. She had to develop that strength, because it was either that, or become a terrible pony that lashes out at everyone she meets. As someone who at a young age used to do that quite often, and who regrets every single instance, I can understand why she wouldn't want to act that way, because that's not who she is.

Fluttershy's discovery of her ability to work so closely with animals is in some ways a bit more disconnected from the rest of the Mane Six, given that any sufficiently loud noise could have disturbed the animals in the way the Sonic Rainboom did. I say in some ways, because her abilities to work with animals have to be magical, because she's far better at it than she has a right to be. No matter how empathetic and kind one is, there's still a barrier between one and other species, because of levels of intelligence and so on. Fluttershy has a Doctor Dolittle like ability to speak to animals in a way nopony else can, and understand how they feel. When she speaks, they can truly understand her, and she them. The Sonic Rainboom, as it did with the rest of the Mane Six, opened up this ability, giving her full access to it. How much access did she have to it prior to the Rainboom? Well, without having seen her with animals prior to the Rainboom, we have no way of knowing.

Now, as I said, I believe she moved to Ponyville, or at least to the ground near Ponyville, very shortly after these events. I believe this because I can see no reason for her to desire to return to Cloudsdayle, not without some evidence that she has strong family ties. How she ended up with the cottage near the Everfree and how long she'd been living there is unknown, as is her actual job. However, we here at Althist.com have been speculating on the issue, and I believe we all came to the conclusion that she runs an animal shelter out of her home, a shelter not just for wild animals, but possibly for pets as well. Pet adoptions may be common, though I question how often she manages to get other ponies to take on animals like toucans and wasps as actual pets. Granted, it may simply be that life works a little differently in the world of Equestria and so animals are more inclined towards becoming pets than they would be for humans in the real world, but I find that hard to believe without more sufficient evidence. I can see Fluttershy keeping a wasp as a pet because of her ability to communicate, but I can't see anypony else keeping one.

The next question becomes, how has she formed relationships with other ponies in Ponyville? Well, it's hard to say. I don't think the situation is analagous to what I suspected Pinkie Pie's was, because given how shy Fluttershy is, I can't see her getting to know a lot of ponies willingly. Indeed, I could even see her being seen as a recluse who, to the others in Ponyville, stays in her cottage all the time and rarely comes into town except when she needs to buy food. That said, however, I suspect she was already friends with at least a couple of the Mane Six prior to Twilight's arrival in Ponyville. Rarity and Fluttershy seem to get along extraordinarily well, a relationship that probably formed due in part to Opalesence. One hypothesis I have about this is that Opal was rescued at a young age by Fluttershy, either as a feral kitten born in the wild, or as a kitten that was dumped in a box somewhere, unwanted, and then was adopted by Rarity, leading to the two becoming friends as they correspond over Opal. Rainbow Dash is someone else I think Fluttershy would have been friends with, or at least tried to get to know, given that it was Rainbow Dash who led to Fluttershy's discovery of her ability to communicate with animals in the first place. And while I don't think Fluttershy or Pinkie Pie would have interacted too much, it's safe to assume they were at least aware of each other. Fluttershy may also have known Applejack just by virtue of the way wild animals would have preyed on Applejack's crops.

Fluttershy has a strong belief in the power of being Kind, a belief that extends most probably to a refusal to use violence, or at least to making it a last resort. Every time she has ever been in danger in the series, we see her time and again demonstrate that she can get through the situation without having to resort to fighting. She managed to calm down the Manticore even after it had attacked and been attacked by her friends. She outright talks down a monsterous DRAGON, the first instance we see her use The Stare, another one of her magical abilities. She then proceeds to not only talk down a Cockatrice, but Stare said Cockatrice down WHILE SHE IS BEING TURNED TO STONE, and not only gets the Cockatrice to reverse her own transformation, but Twilight's as well, saving Twilight's life in the process. She can even outrace Rainbow Dash over a short distance if she has to as shown in Return to Harmony when she did so while pulling a massive balloon behind her, though as I've stated before, I feel that she wouldn't have been able to do that under normal circumstances and that Rainbow Dash was NOT flying at her full strength.(And I don't just mean because she was pulling two ponies behind her, because the balloon would have created far more drag for Fluttershy than two ponies would for Dash.) It's gotten to the point where I would almost prefer to have Fluttershy by my side in a dangerous situation over almost anypony else, because she sees her way through them so well. Almost. That's not to say I don't think Fluttershy couldn't kick some serious flank if she had to...on the contrary, given the way she took down the bear in Lesson Zero, I think she could very easily be a powerful fighter. Even if she was, though, she would never fight to kill, but only to incapacitate, to knock out her opponents and end the fighting with as little harm done to both sides as possible.

Despite all of this, Fluttershy can snap just as easily as anyone else. Her experiences at the Gala showed us that, in a way I find to be perfectly understandable, especially after other recent events such as Green Isn't Your Color and Bird in the Hoof. While it is, admittedly, hard to tell when those events occurred, since the timeline of when episodes happen in the series is a bit mixed up, I am willing to believe they happened shortly before the Gala. Fluttershy had been stressed out beyond belief by those events, and saw the Gala as a time where she could just let go and enjoy being around new animals she'd never seen before. Then she gets there, and not only do the animals not listen to her, but they outright run away. She had never experienced that before, particularly since, as I said, she has the magical ability to communicate on a level that nopony else can. So why did they act that way? While I've seen many explanations, the one I prefer comes from a fanfic I read that has Blueblood going through a Groundhog Day like experience, where it is revealed that the animals in the royal gardens were abused, sheltered animals that find it extremely difficult to trust anypony, even one that can communicate with them so well like Fluttershy can. Under more normal circumstances, with more time, I think Fluttershy could have talked the animals past their fear and gotten closer to them, had she been aware they were abused. But she wasn't aware of that, and when you combine that with the stress she'd already gone through, she was feeling a bit more impatient than she would have otherwise. She tries to communicate with them, and it doesn't work, frustrating her beyond belief because this was the one thing she'd always been able to do. She'd always been able to communicate, to reach out and be caring, and suddenly it's not working? Suddenly they're refusing to love her? It's no wonder she flipped out and went overboard. In particular, her shout near the end of the episode, the infamous "YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE ME!" line, is telling to me, another reason why I felt she had such a hard foalhood prior to the Sonic Rainboom incident. Being with animals, she felt loved and cared for, and returned such feelings. Suddenly being unable to do that must have been more frustrating for her than anything else she could have gone through.

Fluttershy has not had much screentime in Season Two beyond brief little instances, something I feel is unfortunate because Fluttershy sums up, in so many ways, why I like the show for what it is. She's so easily shoved in the background because she's quiet and unsure of herself. I'm hoping we get to see some Fluttershy-centered episodes late in Season Two...given the pattern we've been seeing from the show this season so far, I think it's fairly likely that near the end we'll have two or three Fluttershy episodes. Like the rest of the Mane Six, she's a great character, and one that I want to see more of.

With 15.ai being up again, you can have several MLP say whatever you want (Obviously including our precious Fluttershy).

I already created 2 Fluttershy clips months ago.  1 saying that she loves me and the other asking me if I'll marry her.

I'm Hulk right now.  LOL JK.  In all seriousness, though, Hulk could actually do that.  I've read about how he's so strong that he once lifted an entire city and even has the potential to shatter the whole planet.  Not to mention if Tirek tried using his magic to consume Hulk's power can you imagine all that radiation he'd be absorbing in the process?  We're looking at a potential poisoning for Tirek that he wouldn't live long enough to tell about.
