music Am I the only brony that prefers to listen to 80s music more than today's music?

...because I'm a brony that seems to prefer 80s music over today's music.

 So am I. smile.png

I mostly like New Wave and Synthpop from the 80s, although I do listen to progressive rock, rock and R&B from the 80s and early 90s.

I like alot of that stuff too. In fact check out some of these individuals down below.

All the stuff listed below is newer music that is style along those lines. As such you might be interested in listening to then. They all adopt a more 80's New Wave sound while still staying relatively fresh.

Star Traveller(who is also a brony)

Am I the only one or is there anyone else that shares the same music taste as me (or at least similar)?

Not at all.

P.S. Also more weird is that I'm 13.

There is no direct correlation between age(or lack there-of) and good taste. wink.png

I haven't really listened to too much from the 80's, most of it either to me is okay or not in my favor,. Actually almost everything I listen to is stuff existing today but not on the top charts, as well as stuff from the 70's and 90's. There's actually a little bit of stuff from the 80's that I like, mostly stuff that would classify as "1st Wave Rock" like Depeche Mode, and The Cure.

Dude, do you listen to the Smiths?

Does anyone else like the Smiths or Joy Division? (Unknown Pleasures is from 79' but IDGAF) And nobody's mentioned Black Flag either.

I love 80's music too! But honestly I listen to everything from the beginning of time until now. Anything good I'll listen to. I just don't understand how most people today just listen to the "new" crap that plays on top 40 nonstop.

Pre-90's music is absolutely amazing. You're certainly not alone with that.
Now, the question truly is: does anyone else still listen to stuff from the 1930's? I know I do.

I feel left out, because I'm a brony that seems to prefer 80s music over today's music. I see most of the brony musicians playing out today's music genres like dubstep, electropop etc.

I would prefer the Pet Shop Boys over Lil' Wayne.

I mostly like New Wave and Synthpop from the 80s, although I do listen to progressive rock, rock and R&B from the 80s and early 90s.

Yeah, because there certainly aren't any bronies here who, you know, were born in the 70s and grew up in the 80s or anything...

God I feel old.

This applies very well to the 80's. There was a TON of crappy music in the 80's on the radio. There will always be both crappy music and good music.

I've noticed that a lot of hair metal in particular hasn't aged well, nor has a lot of the stuff from the early 80s (except maybe Blondie, Talking Heads) where we're just starting to emerge out of disco.

My personal favorites:

Anything by Michael Jackson

You Might Think by The Cars

And of course the greatest music video ever made:

I LOVE 80's music OP.

Whenever I'm working I always throw it on. Most of the time I get compliments on my taste especially for my age (22).

Most people figure my age wouldn't like music from that decade. While I mainly listen to the top hits from the 80s just about all music from that decade I prefer

I've heard of The Smiths, and I love Joy Division, found out about them after I watched the movie Control, amazing movie and amazing songs, I haven't heard too many songs by them though Unknown Pleasures is on my list of albums to buy

True, but thrash metal has aged pretty well. Even some of the early lo-fi black metal releases have aged pretty well IMO (Ex. Obsessed by Cruelty - Sodom)

But there's plenty and I mean BOATLOADS of amazing music from the 90's and onward. :(

Hell, I think 90's music is better than 80's music. I find 90's music to have a bit of a more serius tone than 80's music.

Oh, I'm not saying it's bad. Not at all. I love plenty of music from the nineties, I was simply keeping it out of my post, to emphasis my opinions towards 80's and prior. xD

90's music is also fantastic. x3

I'm with you on that, 90's to me was better than the 80's. 90's had some electronic stuff like Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, Daft Punk, and 90's was when Depeche Mode became an Alternative Electronic band (Not that their older synthpop stuff is terrible). 90's also had some really great Hardcore bands like Converge, Coalesce, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Shai Hulud. And so much more, like Grunge, Industrial etc.

People always try to make a big deal saying "80's metal is best" but, I think the 90's had the best metal. If you think about it, it's more diverse. In the the 80's you NWOBHM, thrash, early death, early black, grindcore, power and some doom . In the 90's you had some thrash, LOTS of death and black, more doom, more power, melodic death, grindcore, sludge, viking, groove and bunch more. There's simply more stuff to choose from in the 90's than in the 80's

I'm with ya bro! Not completely as I do enjoy music OTHER than the 80's such as the 90's and early 2000.

If your a big fan of the 80's though, you should see regular show, it has a whole bunch of 80's music, references, and similarities to it!

Aww yeah Sludge Metal was around in the 90's silly of me to not remember, and Grindcore was around in the 90's as well as Melodic Death Metal, 3 of my favorite Metal sub-genres.

People who make a big deal about 80's metal being the best are ussually thrash dickriders. Either that or they're a 12 year old who listen Bon Jovi and s***.

It is pretty hard to compare 80s music to today's music. Some say that the culture and music these days are dying, while the 80s - 2000s broke the ice with the new emergence of legends in music. Pretty much, the decade of music started with the 80s and 2000s too.

That's a total heap of crap, there are legends in music that came out in the 2000's, Discovery by Daft Punk was an album that broke itself apart from the rest of the House albums out there, and it is a highly influential album. Kid A by Radiohead was a groundbreaking album as well. Arcade Fire are a band that is from the 2000's and they are considered to be very influential to the world of music as well, Gorillaz are also considered to be very influential, and the list can keep on going.

My bad, bro. But, I know that your right that the 2000s marked the decade of legends with music too. I wouldn't say that today's music is terrible, but early 2000s have better music I guess.

Man, the 70's, 80's, and 90's is all that I listen too, because each song is unique in my opinion, plus the singers are unbelievably good. I listen to all forms of rock from those time periods, 70's and 80's pop, and even some Disco and R&B groups every now and then.  Really, the only band that I listen to after 2000 is Airbourne, they're like the child of AC/DC.

I like New Order. Its pretty good. I don't know about yours though. You think New Order or Joy Division is better? But, I guess its just Joy Division reformed (because they don't play their original genres).

Joy Division by far. Ian Curtis was a hell of a singer. New Order has like one good song (Blue Monday) . Do you listen to Black Flag?

I do like some 90s music, but that's when computers were starting to become more common. But, 90s is also a bad era for music. AutoTune started to came out, but the early and mid 90s music were good.

I think that the 90s were also making more rappers coming into the mainstream because of N.W.A., but before N.W.A. we have Run DMC.

Hip-hop started to become more mainstream with Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock" from 1982. Man, hip-hop was so early.

But, I do have a preference for the 1980s and early to mid 1990s because they don't do computers, you have to be a musician to make music.

Nowadays, most mainstream pop artists of today use computers and programs like GarageBand etc.

But every decade has its own set of good music, and bad music. Now, trust me, I don't think all 80s music is the best.

When I first listened to "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo. I thought it was stupid, but when you get used it, it gets more catchy.

Hey, who said I can't have an opinion?
