I am male, and my avatar male too.

And about guessing about gender of other users - I'm always assume that "I do not mind that gender they are", by than I'm converse on my native laguage it's easy to understand since there are differenses in verbs for males and females.

Honestly I can't tell how, but after I look at someone's avatar and post I can almost always correctly get their gender. Ive found the guys to follow some pattern that's hard for me to explain. As for the ladies, usually they seem to be either much more intelligent or much more silly around these parts. Out of the I'm guessing fifty some times I've guessed, I've only been wrong once.

To be honest, I don't think there is a reliable measure to actually gauge whether someone is male or female. I know some people are pointing out patterns in gender posting habits or the way people type, or how their posts are worded, or whether they "promote exposition over emotion", but I don't see any of that working. The best way I always find out is this:

 

1. Check their profile.

 

or

 

2. Ask them.

 

But it's always fun to guess a person's gender before finding it out definitely, but to be absolutely sure you have to check their profile or ask them.

 

Of course, they could be lying, but there's no way you could know that over the Internet without more proof.

I just assume that a user is male until i find out otherwise. I think my avatar is pretty gender neutral. I'd associate the name Bucky with a guy more than i would a girl too.

Personally, I've given up trying to guess on the internet.  Most places username or avatar can be a bigclue, but around here who knows?  I usually assume male because most forum members I've come across are male. For those of you shou could tell, what are some of those telltale hints?

Because most people on the internet are male, I usually assume that any new people I meet are guys until I learn otherwise, either by looking at their profile or by hearing it from them directly. Depending on their posting habits I may draw that conclusion for myself. User names aren't much to go on unless they're something stale like "cuteprincess1995" or whatever. Since most ponies in the show are female, most members with a non-OC pony avatar will probably have a female avatar, so that's still no help.

 

Twilight is my current avatar simply because she's my favorite pony and the one I find most kindred. Prior to taking on this and a few other Twilight avatars in recent history, I wore one of Space Ghost and the rest were Drizzt Do'Urden - both males.

 

I think only one member has mistaken me for a female before, or at least only one who has indicated it, and that might have something to do with my user name of Artemis. The name is taken from Artemis Entreri (a fictional man), not the goddess.

@, it is not only females that have immaculate conduct of English language, there are also males who have flawless grammar. Therefore, the probability to be mistaken that a male poster as female would be quite high if you consider that only females use irreproachable grammar.

I usually check member's profile for their gender, and if they don't state it, I call them "they/them", or just by their member user name. It is not possible to guess gender by the name or avatar alone.

I've almost always had female characters on my avatar, which might be a bit confusing. But most of my favorite MLP characters happen to be mares. I've never had an OC – if I created one, it would probably be a stallion, but I'm not completely sure, as I think the mare design used on the show looks better than the stallion one (the head in particular).

As for other users, I wouldn't make any assumptions based on their usernames or avatars (especially if the latter is of a show character).

No way I guess. Unless stated otherwise, I assume them they are male unless stated otherwise. That’s also a habit I have taken from Spanish, as that language uses male pronouns as gender neutral as well
