I see that a lot of Bronies here seem to either love Electronic music or don't care for it at all. I was wondering what your thoughts on it are. Do you think it's just as good as, say, Rock or some other kind of music?

I don't think it's overrated: but I would say as with all music genres some Electronic music is crap and some is ok, some is good and some is great.

I guess it comes down to personal taste as well: you said "do you think it's as good as rock" and I like electronic music more myself.

Like most genres, I don't really have an opinion on it. Some songs/artists I might enjoy in that genre, while other artists/songs...not so much. I don't usually have an opinion on the actual genre, just on artists or songs. So, I'm neutral on the whole thing.

I'm not that into electronic music but I do enjoy IDM quite a bit. Although I'm only familiar with Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. I wouldn't say it's overrated as a whole, but brostep (stuff like Skrillex) is really annoying.

I think electronic music is good music, but good music is an opinion of the listener. Some people don't find it good music. One problem electronic music has which it also shares with orchestral music is the ability to make something that sounds good, but actually has no musical content in it. What I mean by that is that if you establish good sound design and mixing you can make something that sound epic and really cool without having musical progression, tension-release, etc. There is some music that is really just cool musical effects that don't really carry the tune that well.

Overrated? Of course not, electronic music can capture emotions just like any other non-electronic genre, and is definitely an art form

There are exceptions, as many pop artists and lazy producers exploits electronic music by recycling cheap beats and samples for a quick buck *cough*David Guetta*cough*

Electronic music offers something other genres don't. It adds variety to music and paves the way for other forms of creative art

It's a very vast genre, so it's impossible to say that all of it is overrated. But some sub-genres definitely are

Some of it's good, but I do think it gets to much attention. There's a lot of people that will offend terrible artists just because "it took a lot of time and effort to make.", True, that can be said for ANY genre, but electronic music seems to have a disproportional amount of it.

Yes I do.
Probably because there's too much electronic music these days..
Well, at least the charts there is. Any song I hear that's in the top 10 is bound to be some big rave song about clubbing or "having a good time".

But I can see why. From experience I think Electro is one of the easiest forms of music to produce, since the primary instrument used for every sound is your typical synthesiser/keyboard (or drum machine)

But maybe that's just me.. I don't think a piece of music has enough soul if it's produced via synthesis.

I'll end this paragraph now as I'm very tired and this probably didn't make any sense.

EDIT: Continuing what I said about there being too much electronic music. I saw something on the Pony Confessions Tumblr which kinda made me notice something that now really bugs me in this community (even though I love it)
It said something like "It kinda bugs me that for every Brony Hard Rock/Orchestral/Acoustic song, there's at least 1000 electro songs or remixes".
And yeah, I agree with that

I think there's likely plenty of good electronic music out there if i looked but my love of it was when it was new and exciting and wasn't so commercial. Sure the production is a lot better now but dubstep does little for me and i haven't heard an electronic track in a long time that's blown my socks off. Gimme some old school tronic anyday.

I enjoy Electronic Music, but it's not the only thing I listen to.

But a short answer I can give for something like this is:

Something can't be overrated if it has a reason that it is liked.

I don't think its over rated, i mean if people like it and its good i don't see the issue.

Theres good and bad electronic music as anything.

Do I listen to it alot? No, but i don't think its overrated because I don't listen to it. Its just not music I listen to alot since I don't have as big a taste for it.

That said I still listen to some occasionally.

I can see the appeal, so no i don't think its overrated.

It is not overrated, it's just liked by many people.

I really hate it when people say "All electronic music is overrated, it's so easy to push a button!" First of all, you cannot not simply push a button, and you instantly have a song. Believe it or not some skill is needed to create electronic music, I'd like to see you create a song without any knowledge of the DAW you are using, or what items you are using to create the track.

Also, not ALL electronic music is terrible, there's loads of it all over the world. If you just search hard enough, I'm absolutely sure you'll find a song that you will truly enjoy.

Electronic music is not overrated at all. Why one would think that is beyond me.

While I'm more of a technical metal listener myself I do enjoy electronic music as well. Long ago I hated electronic music but then I decided to try and make it myself to prove a point and well, I failed miserably. During that time I came to appreciate electronic music and let me tell ya, it's definitely not just pushing buttons.

Electronic music has a lot of layers, just like any other band. And to make all the layers work together isn't something you can do by just derping around on your pc. I dare you to push buttons and show me your results. C'mon, wasn't it that you people said that "by just pushing buttons a song and bacon comes flying out of your pc", so go on, I double dare you.

I also don't know where the "no emotion" argument comes from. It seems to me people are only able to tell apart emotion from non-emotion by seeing a guitarist make funny faces and dance around on the stage. I don't know why that's the only way of showing emotion, like, Atlas Novus is full of emotion but they're so into the music that they completely forget about anything, without making the funny faces and silly dances. If you deny that that's true emotion, I think you need to get your hearing and eyes checked. Same goes for electronic music, I dare you to say that  Neverending Strife, Mind Control and Arcadepunk have no emotion at all. I could list hundreds of electronic songs but the result will still be the same. That being that you're wrong.

So yea, electronic music is not overrated at all, it's just as good as any other genre. But I guess taste differs and opinion has to be defended by silly arguments.

Kind of a vague question, to be honest.

There's hundreds, maybe even thousands of styles and genres of electronic music, and many, many different ways of producing and performing it. It's not a genre of music, and barely even an umbrella term. You might as well ask "is non-electronic music overrated?".

But, no, I don't really think it is. True, some forms of electronic music are incredibly popular now, even hitting the mainstream. Some of which I like, and some not so much. But lumping all electronic music together based on certain forms that have hit the mainstream doesn't really do a great deal of justice to it's diversity.

Well, it's just as good as any other genre. There are some Drum & Bass songs I've come to really like while most others I can't even begin to comprehend what's good about them (Dubstep?). One Drum & Bass song I really adore is Amazon Rain by B-complex. But which genre is good really depends on personal preferences so I can't say there's one particular genre that's universally better or worse than all the rest.

Electronic music? I guess I'm really not familiar with what exactly that means. However, I can say that I definitely prefer acoustic instruments over pretty much anything electronic. That's not to say I never like music that is more electronic...

I think one reason there is so much electronic music in this fandom isn't because it necessarily easier (lol quantize), but because its popular. To many people it looks like an easy way to be popular (which btw it isn't) or they make electronic music because they think that is what they are supposed to do.

Must...stay away...from electronica thread...losing...power...

Yes, I think a lot of it is. At least, most of what's popular is overrated and, IMO, generic at best. And because the majority always seems to flock towards the mediocre, the generic stuff becomes so popular that it inspires more generic stuff, and so on, until the scene is oversaturated with the same old song and dance. But really, this isn't just limited to electronic music - to some degree, I think every genre suffers from having unoriginal hacks acting as its "face" whilst the truly creative musicians remain in the shadows.

That said, I'm in Envy's boat inasmuch as simply having a preference for the sound of acoustic instruments, but I have heard some electronic music that I can groove to. For the most part, I appreciate a lot of the obscure ambient stuff, but the dance-beat electronica can go stuff itself as far as I'm concerned. If you wanna hear some underrated electronic stuff, Moog's the guy I'd ask.

There are a lot of producers, artists and groups that uses all sorts of instruments and samplers in electronic music, it's not all about synthesizers. Some examples.

Dats probably cause I spent a whole year going on an IDM binge without getting sick of it

That might of been me since I remember going on an Infected Mushroom craze a couple of months ago

I thought that this argument was over back in 2011 when elitists decided that it was boring to troll people on Deadmau5 videos in the comments section

its okai dunt cri

Anyways all that shit aside I have to say that modern electronic music is what's falling, sure enough there's some pretty great stuff today, but it gets buried under the massive amount of generic House/Trance crap. My only wish would be for people to get the names of the people who are buried out there, so that electronic music can seem as diverse as it really is, instead of just treating electronic music like it's just some genre of "music dat u play at da club"

Overrated? Nope

Falling? Yes

Something I remembered about the history of electronic music. The first electronic hit album was the music of J.S Bach. I'll tell you what if you a electronic musician who want to learn how to make better interweaving melodic lines (counterpoint) and how to produce it, listen to Walter Carlos Switched on Bach
