gaming The Xbox One

Man, you have no idea how much I wish more people did that.  So many people have been losing their heads since the announcement and doing silly stuff like saying they know 100% everything they need to know about the Xbox One to determine whether or not they'll buy one.  It's just like, people, c'mon, be reasonable!  They announced it TWO DAYS AGO!!!  You can't possibly know EVERYTHING you need to know about the console at this point. img-1492390-1-happy.png

True, people should be waiting until at least for E3 to showcase more things for the console before ultimately judging it.  Sadly for Microsoft, they got completely sideswiped with Sony and their console.  Heck, Sony even showed off little bits of their console before the One was even showed.  Sony's playing aggressively, and they seem to be in a very good place as of now.  E3 will be the final cut for people to decide on preorders for either console and what to get.

The Xbox One’s disappointing reveal has shot up sales of the Wii U on Amazon.com. The system was at #390 before the conference, but now has shot up to #40 due to Microsoft’s glorified TV box.
This momentum should carry Nintendo right into the summer as they have big plans for the Wii U at E3 and this fall. The console race has just begun but it’s good to see gamers are picking up a system that’s dedicated to gaming first, and multimedia second.

I don't really like the name Xbox one. They should've named it Xbox 720! I mean, when they name Xbox one, it sound like the 1st kind of Xbox

Meh, it looks somewhat interesting. I mean, it looks like an Xbox. I'm more interested in the PlayStation4, the whole "anti-used game" thing is starting to bug me.

I made a video talking about my thoughts on xbox one. My take on the demo of the console, the lineup of games, and the lack of indie development for it.

The problem is that in order for any console to succeed, it needs a library of games. Which means that you need companies to make games for you. This leads to, well, the XBOX ONE, which seems to be marketed towards developers/publishers instead of gamers.

Extreme DRM solutions? Check. Constant stream of information about gamers and their habits so you can market stuff to them more effectively? Check.

The other side of the coin is of course that if you alienate your customers entirely with BS, they won't get your system anyway. So you need to find a middle ground. Somewhere between keeping the publishers/devs happy so they'll make games for your system and keeping gamers happy so they'll actually be excited about the system. It's tough because these needs seem to contradict each other. It of course gets even more complicated when you realize why the companies want these measures, which is to please an entirely different group of people, namely shareholders, who hear buzzwords like piracy and billions lost and want to know what's being done about them.

But at least there was some good that came out of this reveal:

Honestly, the more I hear about this console, the more I extremely dislike it. MS better pull off something HUGE at E3 at this point. They have managed to piss off indie devs as well. It is already confirmed to be considerably weaker than the PS4, which is purely evident with the fact that the biggest 'game' that they showed thus far is Call of Duty, which looked unbelievably unimpressive . Not to mention the game installing thing, Kinect being REQUIRED to be on for the console to function, MS being able to spy on you like before, the extreme focus on TV, the rumor that the hard drive cannot be removed, it is all adding up to something bleak.

I want to say though, I actually think it is nice having a machine that can do many things in one package. I just love devices like that, but  when you basically forget the core of the unit (Games in this case), as well as pull the stunts that I mentioned above, then there are some problems. It is like a smarthphone concentrating entirely on apps and having the phone service itself be terrible, which the phone service is the original point of the phone.

It is weird, I truly thought that MS was going to bring something awesome storming out of the gate, but they have done the exact opposite at this point.

That moving fish is pretty cool though, right? RIGHT?

I'm surprised nobody has posted this video, but the video explains a lot.

I am not buying an Xbox One, why, well simple, it's shit.

If you read the annotations, it says that a 24/7 internet connection is required to play all games.

The Xbox one blocks used games.

The Xbox one has a prepaid fee.

Just watch the video, Microsoft isn't focused on games and the gamers, it's focused on making millions more dollars.

This just in from Game Informer; Microsoft has released a statement that, while admittedly ambiguous in many respects, has definitively answered that there will be no fee for used games, although there will be some kind of authentication system that was not outlined in much detail in the announcement.  For more information, here's the full story:

This Jimquisition video sums things up pretty well, ESPECIALLY the "wait for E3" thing that I keep hearing. And I'm sorry, but I can't go along with that. As Mr. Sterling explains, the presentation Microsoft did this week was something they felt like the world should see. This was the first impression they WANTED to make. And that is utterly baffling. I'm not sure if anything can truly be read into that, but if it can, it isn't good.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/7358-Xbox-One-out-of-Ten

On the new info on used games, I hope it's true that the fee idea is being ditched. And if it took a PR nightmare and a volcanic eruption of consumer outrage to get Microsoft to can that idea, then I'm glad it happened. Sometimes the ends justify the means.

I just read up on it.  It's saying that the used game connects to the internet connectivity of every twenty-four hours to authenticate that you are in fact the owner of a certain game.  If you sell a game, I can imagine places like Gamestop de-authenticating your account to a certain game so you can't keep playing an installed game without keeping your system offline for all eternity, as a way to allow installing of games from disks and to prevent thievery.  A perfectly fine thing to do.

Your next point is very confusing.  The prepaid fee of what exactly are you talking about?  You yourself just stated that used games can't be used, so what are you thinking is the prepaid fee for?

And with your last statement, of course Microsoft is trying to make money.  It's silly to think any company isn't trying to do that.  If they can't make money, they'd stop doing what they're doing and attempt something else.  Microsoft is just attempting to integrate the new Xbox into a multimedia console, though I can see how that's very upsetting.  From what was shown, it doesn't look like they showed much on the gaming aspect of their own gaming console, so they've got a lot to catch up on when E3 comes around.

Finally, I leave you with my post I've already made.  It goes through the general pros and cons of the Xbox One without being one-sided about the console at all.  While some of them aren't correct anymore, such as paying fees for used games, it still goes through a good list of the pros and cons of what the new console so far as seen has to offer.

The Xbox One looks like a neat piece of hardware, but it doesn't really speak out to me. This thing doesn't look like a video game console, and for everything that they were questioned about, it seems they're backpedaling on most of the questions or don't want to reveal anything. It's really hard to look at this and wonder if I should put money into this thing while there's still two other consoles to look forward to, along with my PC. Let's look at some of the pros in this thing:

  • New hardware built into it means better experience overall, which should be expected from a new console. While still not as great as a PC, it's a definite upgrade from the 360. And hey, it finally comes with a Blu-ray!
  • Microsoft is partnering up with the NFL so that their media attention for the One will come to great use. While not a fan of the sport myself, I can see a lot of people loving the idea of instant coverage from the NFL through their televised needs.
  • Speaking of television, this thing should be easily integrated so you can watch television through it and switch back and forth from games to television easily and with no hassle or slowing down.
  • The Kinect is fully upgraded as well and it's bundled with every One (meaning it's a free piece), so lovers of that little piece will be able to play with better efficiency than the 360's version.
  • That controller looks to be wireless, which is a great thing to see finally done from the get-go.
  • They did state this console will be getting eleven exclusives, and eight of them are new IP's. That's a pretty big deal seeing as most console gaming is made up of existing franchises with sequels.
  • From how things went, it looks like EA will be supporting the ever loving hell out of Microsoft's Xbox One. So expect exclusive DLC offers and things to come just like it did with the 360.
  • Your 'gamerscore' will transfer over from your 360. Along with this, the achievement system is getting an overhaul.
  • You can talk to your One! Tell it to turn off or put in a game. Neat idea there, though I'm wondering how they'll pull it off.
  • Dislike plugging in disks over and over? No problem! You can download your games into the One! Just take your disk and download away!
  • You can plug in new HD's, so that'll allow you to store memory away in other places.
  • There's also going to be a Halo television series for the One directed by Steven Spielberg himself!

Some pretty good points here. But, what are the cons?

  • This thing looks like it was built to be a media center, not a gaming console. Their presentation didn't even look like they were competing with Sony and Nintendo, more like they were competing against Google and Apple instead.
  • Absolutely no backwards compatibility. It's not being considered at all.
  • Used games? A deal of the past! More or less, if you want to purchase a used game or even just borrow one from a friend, you have to pay. By pay, I mean real cash to activate the privilege to play the used game.
  • We were barely shown anything related to gaming on a gaming console. It seems like most of their showcasing was revolved around it's multimedia and what it could do, such as talking to a console. For gamers, this felt like Microsoft forgot they were making a gaming console.
  • The downloading of games is a neat thing, but the hard drive size is not. It's only 500GB, and you'll be using a lot of space real quick. While they allow new HD's to plug in, that's additional things you'll have to buy for more space since the hard drives can NOT come out like the 360 ones. Just so you know, a typical 1TB HD at Walmart (a Seagate) is $89.99 in the states, not sure about other countries.
  • Speaking of other countries, the multimedia aspect doesn't seem like it'll work all that well in other countries, such as over in Europe or Japan. While I can't say for certain since I don't live there, from what I've been told from people there and read up, it won't be as well compatible as it would with American purchasers.
  • The Online is confirmed to not always be online. That's a good thing, right? Not so much when you learn that you HAVE to plug it in at least once every twenty-four hours to be able to use your One at all. Oh, and they did allow it so certain games could be always online if the publishers so desire...
  • Finally, and this is my opinion on things, it's ugly and has a horrible name. Why in the hell would they name this thing the Xbox One? I actually get why they named it the 360 now, because by doing one you're right back at the start with the Xbox. Get why the called it the One now? And why does this thing look like my old VCR? Seriously, it's just so ugly looking.

There's probably more to say here that hasn't been put out. I've been scouring the internet for information and this seems to be the ones that appear the most. Any others have something to add in on this? For me, I'm not so certain, but I don't think I'll be going with the XBox One with how things are as of now. The PS4 and the WiiU seem more interesting, and if anything I at least have my PC and Vita to play with.

So, you need to install a game in order to play it.

You can't simply loan a game to a friend.

Then can someone please explain why I would play a game on this instead of a PC? The whole 'just put the disc in and play' thing is the main advantage of consoles AFAIK.

If they don't bring out great exclusives, Microsoft is done with the console industry. As it stands there is literally no reason to buy this. Anything it can do, PS4/Wii/PC can do better and/or cheaper.

Well actually 1st off you can buy used games and still play them, BUT  you have to pay a fee to play the game on your console which almost cost as much as a New game. 2nd It does not need 24/7 internet connection, because that would be a GREAT down fall in sales if someone buys it and does not have internet connection, then that person will not recommend the system to one of the friends.

Meh, I really don't like XBOX that much, the reason, is XBOX Live, it is full of bucking trolls, hackers, and young people (like kids) due to the fact that all of us want to be entertained. Firstly,

TROLLS. GOD BUCKING TROLLS.

I mean, I don't hate trolls, but I hate trolls if they are trolling kids, in my opionion of kid trolling, I think of cyberbullying.

Secondly, hackers want HAX.

Lastly, young kids playing M rated games? What is this?

Anyway, I perfer PS4 then XBOX one.

It sounds to me like you want to have a good online experience overall.  Of course, this comes from shooting games since most online multiplayer doesn't get most of the flak that COD, Halo, or BF does, such as racing, sports, or even competitive fighting.  I can tell you that whether you go to Sony or Microsoft's game console, or any other form of gaming, you'll find people acting like idiots.  And you just put up the three most annoying things for online gaming, other than DRM or buy-ins for winning.

First off, the trollers.  They call everything out as if they're trolling, when really all they're doing is acting like pathetic little twerps ruining the fun for everyone around.  I can appreciate a good troll, whether it's done on me or not.  It's interesting and sometimes fun when someone can do something good when using their wits and planning something out into a really good troll, but lobbing grenades at your team, shooting around to reveal your position, then screaming out YOLO or LOL is not a troll.  I think the most annoying ones are the people that play really loud music in their microphones.  It's a child looking for attention.  I've rarely seen an adult do things like this (unless it's for YouTube...) and even then, at least they're not being as big of idiots.  I'm actually not sure why the younger players do this stuff.

Then the hackers.  Thankfully, these are actually few and far in between from what I've seen and they tend to stay on their own private servers (most hackers I know just hack into a game to mess around with friends with a different experience, like infinite rockets and stuff like that).  That's not to say people don't go out to screw with people, but I don't see it often.

And the young people.  These are the most annoying.  It's not that it's because the players are young, I don't care about that.  It's mostly because most of the younger players give off a young, childish attitude when playing.  They scream in their high pitched voices when things don't go their way, make stupid jokes all the time, and rarely even try to work as a team when playing, preferring to screw teammates over for one more kill.  And of course, the majority of these people are in the mentioned above trollers group, excusing all their actions as "Trolling around".  Idiots the lot of them.

Once more, this is not me saying that all young players do these kinds of things.  I've had some fun playing with them myself and can be sensible and very skilled players.  But sadly, the majority of people doing this also seem to be the younger players.  Also, if you like shooters, I'd recommend for you Tribes: Ascend.  Really fun game, reminds me a lot of Halo but with jet-packs and intense speed.  Oh, and it's free.  You can buy your upgrades quicker, but you can also just play and earn those buyable stuff as well, which is fantastic to have in a game.

Personally, I would only get one to replace my current 360 because of the Blu-ray player. At the moment the 360 is acting as an internet repeater anyway, The only apps that get any use are Netflix, Hulu+, the DVD player, and once in awhile playing a video file hosted on my computer. Honestly I would be using an old plain Xbox rather than the 360 to serve the same purpose, but I got a screaming deal on it due to where I work.

My wife is the console gamer, and she still prefers the games on the PS2. (Yep, PS*2*. There's not enough that interests her on the PS3 to justify the price in her mind, and lack of backwards compatibility cinched the deal for her. She has no interest in collecting multiple boxes for the sake of a couple of games each. If they republished old games so they did run on the new hardware, that would pique her interest.)

This'll sound nuts, but I don't like the whole console must connect to the internet at least once kind of thing not because I'm anti DRM as much as I'm worried about the people who don't have internet at all. I know it's nuts saying that on the freaking internet but I have lived in areas where only about five percent of the population has dsl: in these areas broadband isn't even available. The thing that I find unique here is that most of the kids were gamers despite not having internet and most of them were sworn xbox 360 fans.

If these kids were hearing about the console online they'd most likely be aware that it will have to connect to the internet at least once for it to properly function but they don't have internet so really they're gonna watch a thirty second ad from Microsoft which will not say anything about the whole online requirement. I know for a fact that gamers in this area are going to be absolutely freaking pissed.

Once again, I know it's weird to be complaining about this on the internet of all things but there are still many places in the united states that don't have decent connections and I'm not sure if dial-up would even be considerable for the amount of data that would no doubt have to be transferred over to Microsoft. I've lived with these people and even though I haven't seen them in ages I'd still consider them my friends so I'm very against this whole thing.

other than that I'll actually say I really don't have too much against the console. I'm sure the whole no backwards compatibility thing is because it's completely different hardware than the 360 and the only reason the WiiU had backwards compatibility is because they literally put a Wii in there. The whole having to pay extra to watch cable that you're already paying for on the xbox I once again think is stupid, but I don't really care too much as I'm expecting people won't use it as nobody's that lazy to simply change your TV setup to video 1. There really weren't many games there but with all the crazy features they announced I'm sure somebody can eventually find a way to link them altogether and create something fascinating, although considering the Xbox's current market and how Nintendo's usually the one to make crazy ass games I doubt it.

Tribes: Ascend is... an interesting game.  While it's still got people that prefer killing, it's got more push on being gathered and playing as a team, especially since you'll need all the help you can get going up against people that have jet-packs and glider boots making it an extremely fast paced shooting game.  For the time I've played it, I haven't had as much fun as I did in a long time with a shooter.  The last time was most likely Halo 2, loved playing that game with a party of people...  Think I'll put that game back on my computer now, I'd like to play that some more now especially with the nice updates they have in it.

If your wife prefers playing older games from Sony, I would highly recommend either just picking up a PS3 right now or possibly even a PS Vita like I did.  The PSN network has an enormous amount of PSX classic games.  I myself own Tomba, Legend of Dragoon, Klonoa, Parasite Eve 1&2, and all the Final Fantasy games before 10, and there's so much more there.  A new one I usually see around $250, and that's not including used ones at Gamestop.  Along with free internet playing and built in wireless controllers, it's a cheaper console overall.  As for the Vita, you can also get PSP games on it with PSX games.  But... you may want to wait until either this thing gets cheaper or they have cheaper memory cards, in the very least.

I doubt it'll be anything heavy.  The online once every 24 hours might change, but I see why they'd have that.  They're currently allowing it so you can take your disks and transfer it fully onto a console after purchase so you don't need to switch out between games so often.  But then they'd have to ensure people don't give that game to a friend to do the exact same thing, taking something they didn't purchase.  So they want to make sure that games aren't being taken in such a way.

I can see Gamestop also being a part of this.  Once a game is resold to them, they put it into the online data and that person that sold the game can't use the data anymore on his console, ensuring he can't get away from taking something after purchase, and deactivating his game from his console.  Authenticating other consoles to use a disk and the disk only is to ensure that it can't be downloaded for transfer unless the original console is already deactivated.

Do you see what I mean now?  I can see myself why people will still be upset with this happening 'cause who knows what else is going on.  But this is the main reason why this is happening.

And connecting games into the TV setup... I see that being a really cool thing.  Think about it: you have a game that comes out with some cool, sandbox element, and to get new missions... you have to watch feedback from some television or even see messages in commercials that may broadcast, looking for your new target or mission.  That would be a lot of fun in a spy game or something similar.
