If Spike Can Talk, Why Can't Winona?

Ok. So I noticed that Winona can't talk. But spike can. And in Equestria Girls, Spike became a dog. And he could talk. This is really weird to me.

I suppose it's because Spike could originally talk as a dragon, so they would make him able to talk as a dog as well.

 

Winona has always been a dog that can't talk, so she wouldn't be able to talk.

I think that's like comparing apple to oranges in my opinion. Winona is a pet, Spike isn't. Spike is a major character, Winona isnt. See what I mean? Even though Spike was able to talk as a dog, he was already able to speak as a dragon in Equestria so why would it make any difference right?

Well, Spike has always been able to talk, so it would make sense for him to still be able to talk in the real world. Winona, on the other hand, has never been able to talk. 

 

Also, it may be that since Spike is most likely smarter than Winona, and probably kept his knowledge when he turned into a dog. Just another theory to put out there.

I find this interesting too. I think Spike could talk as a dog in Equestria girls since he could talk as a Dragon in the pony world. Also one guy commented something like "Woah! A talking dog!". 

Griffons, Dragons, Ponies, and Mules can all talk. Heck, I'm probably even forgetting a few. A lot of random creatures can talk, but a lot of them can't. Now what I find to be funny is that in the episode "A dog a pony show" we saw talking dogs. Now these weren't the same kind of dog as Winona mind you, but they were still dogs. 

 

This thread reminds me of the age old question. If Goofy is a dog and can talk, why can't Pluto?

Like most people here, I think the reason Spike can talk as a dog in the human world is because he could talk as a dragon in the pony world. But you bring up a good point. The two worlds seem to have corrosponding species. By this I mean that the role which ponies fill in the pony world is filled by humans in the human world, and the Mirror turns ponies into humans and vice-versa when they pass through it. Therefore, the role of dragons in the pony world should be filled by a corresponding species in the human world. The Mirror seems to have chosen to have dragons correspond with dogs and so turn dragons into dogs, and THAT is what really makes no sense here because dogs in the human world are nothing like dragons in the pony world (ie, they don't talk). The human world of EQG is not the same as our real life human world, so the rules could be slightly different from ours, but Fluttershy seemed to imply that only humans can talk in their world so I guess it would be difficult to find corresponding human world species for all of the talking species from Equestria. Maybe the Mirror should have just turned Spike into a human too. Maybe the Mirror should just turn all talking species from the pony world into humans.

I think that is because spike was placed under a more educated life than wiona, in other words, he was taught how to speak. Wiona was not.

Dogs have been pets and companions since the dawn of mankind, it is natural then, that a dog in the show would be written as a pet incapable of talking. I would like to present the idea that Winona is intelligent and capable of communication, just not using conventional language. Why some animals can talk and others can seems fairly arbitrary. It seems as if livestock (ponies,cows) are capable of talking while other animals aren't.

 

As for Spike being able to talk in the human world, the world has changed and so have the rules. Also, it suits the story for him to be capable of talking.

Well, no. It's more than likely the writers needed spike to exist in the eqg universe in a form that wouldn't raise eyebrows. They really could have chosen any animal, it's just that keeping spike as a dragon might have been a bit too conspicuous. Winona was designed to be a dog through and through.

Technically not all dragons can talk as we have seen in Dragon Quest. But I would guess if NO OTHER dragon could talk but Spike I would think that when Twilight hatched with magic him she gave the ability to talk
