Your opinions on height discrimination / Heightism

Have you been discriminated because of height?

If you don't know what heightism is, then you can read about it on here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Height_discriminationhttp://www.thecord.ca/height-discrimination-a-concern/.

I honestly didn't even know it existed, that is because it really isn't something that's talked about. It's very easy to notice it once you keep your eyes open for it. After I found out, I've realized that I have been discriminated because of height. Many people feel self conscious about their height, I have never really felt self conscious about it or at least not much. But it's annoying that there are people that seem to look down on us shorter people.. (<-- Literally.. lol :P)

My opinion is that heightism shouldn't exist in modern society then again there are a lot of worse things that exist anyway but I still believe it's stupid. Especially since height is not something you can change, so judging someone based on their height is pretty naive and some people seem to be a little harsh.

I have been discriminated against because of height, but I didn't think it was because of my height but I would rather have thought it had something to do with me as an individual. I didn't really know that people were being discriminated against because of height but I have been reading a little about heightism and apparently it is real and it's a problem in some cases. You can see it everywhere, sports, business, dating, movies and even in advertisements. So I decided that I would create this topic to let people know about these shenanigans.

Of course there is no way to stop it, it's in our primitive nature I guess but still who knows maybe this will change how some look on it. I'm sure that there are no people on here that discriminate either very tall people or short people. But because new topics are fun, why not make one.

So what's your opinion on this? Have you been discriminated for being either too tall or short? You can share a story about it if you like.

Seriously, what?

We already have sexism and racism, but now heightism?

What next? Weightism?

Humans really need to stop having so many discriminations, it's really getting on my nerves.

I think, alot of jobs that has alot of Stretching+ Reaching items from about 6feet high. Plus Weight Lifting of about 200lbs. Would be a challenge, and cause judging bosses to discriminate of people that are 3ft or shorter.

Coachs judge kids in teams by, size and how good their feet can run.

Actually we also have those who discriminate weight. It's called weightism like you said: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weightism

But I agree, all those discriminations. I just wanted to share it, it's weird how many discriminations we have but that's just how it is, I guess.

Next to race or gender discrimination, this one peeps me off really badly....

Instance why, I once applied for a job for back store keeping, and I instantly got rejected for being less than 5.5 ft tall......

It's stupid, as there is that saying that size doesn't matter, is what you can pull off yourself that makes you big.

Well I am not really sure if someone has mentioned anything bad about my height, I mean I am quite short I guess, someone probably have :P

But of course I don't like when people do/say such things just because of someone's height. It's wrong, I mean you can't really chose how tall you want to be ._.

Pretty sure I've been discriminated against because of my height at least once, I just can't remember it.  I'm only 5'4 feet tall so I guess people could easily look down upon me for that.  Their problem, not mine.  Any kind of discrimination is bad in my opinion.  You should judge someone by actions, not by looks.

Is mocking short people really become classified as a "discrimination" now? I'm probably being ignorant as I'm of an above average height but are people really that sensitive. Even when you see a short person being mocked, you know the person mocking is joking around or trying to find a silly reason to prove they are better than the short-arse.

There is better things to worry about than people making fun of your height.

Wait is the tall medium short the height you are or the height that you have discriminated against? And also does it count as discrimination if you just poke fun, but actually prefer people of that height category?

I really don't understand how people can be judged for their height. As if how tall (or short - I know I'm personally on the shorter side) somebody is can really define who they are. That's as ridiculous as judging somebody's character based on the colour hair they have, or the type of shirt they wear - do humans just make up new ways to make somebody feel different every day? I really don't know where half of the things people are judged for even come from, ageism being another thing that sticks out to me as utterly stupid.

So yeah, as you can probably tell, my opinion is that it's just dumb. Well and truly dumb.

Actually, some people are sensitive because society has made it important, that you're tall. Also, I'm sure a lot of short people don't mind their height but being discriminated for it, that's just not right. I'm not saying that you can't make fun of someone for their height, I mean sure as long as it's just for fun. But it does have effects on people, just saying.

Discrimination and making fun of someone isn't the same, I guess it's more relatable if you're short. As long as people don't discriminate short or very tall people I'm fine with it. So yeah, mocking someone and discriminating are two opposites.

So I understand that being tall is something society makes you look up to (sorry for the height joke, I couldn't help it.) I also understand that my last post was more ignorant than I thought. Though does this mean we should do something about it to reduce this offensive behavior?

I hate to break to you, but "fat-shaming" is already something Social Justice Warriors have massive fits over.

My opinion? We need to stop calling more and more things discrimination because undermines the severity of the problem by making a mockery of it. The reason equal rights movements have hit such a wall over the last few years is because there are people complaining that EVERYTHING is discrimination or politically incorrect and making the people talking about real issues look bad.

All these discriminations really bug me dry.png . I'm super short myself and a lot of my friends are short, too. This one time when this girl was picking on my friend, (saying she doesn't eat healthy enough, and that's why she's a "munchkin" -.-) I honestly wanted to dropkick her. I said that that was rude, and her height isn't something that she can't change. I honestly HATE people who discriminate, about anything really. Race, size, shape, etc.

Height jokes are funny, well I was only pointing it out. Not anything we can do except not discriminating people because of their height ourselves.

Height discrimination is real though, it's not to make fun of other peoples problems, all I'm trying to do is letting people know that it does exist. Height discrimination shouldn't even exist but it does and it's not fair. There are people that are self conscious about their height and I don't want people to feel that way.

The height part was more just to see if there was a connection, you just choose if you're short, tall or average height.

Ever hear the phrase "the road to hell is paved with good intentions?". I believe a very famous book(I need to read my copy) explored what happens when you start crusading against anything that might offend anyone. Yes, all forms of discrimination exist, but there's certain kinds like this that should be handled as they come up(and I mean the real stuff, like not hiring someone for it if they could do the job) instead of going on massive crusades against them.

Hell, I'm 5ft 4in and 202lbs, but I'll make both short and fat jokes.

You're right, but I still think that people shouldn't discriminate someone because of their height not saying that we actually need to do everything in our power to stop it. Like I said it's not really that important like many other problems. But still, this isn't exactly something that's hard to fix, but I think it won't be long until people won't judge someone because of their height. I just want people to be comfortable with their height, I am and I think that everyone should be.

It's a big enough problem to even mess with, especially when you have things like racism, homphobia, or judging people for disabilities to worry about in modern culture.

My opinions on height discrimination is like this, people should not be discriminated for their height. Their height is really something that a person can not control, it happens naturally. I'm tall but, I don't make fun of people for their height because they would do the same to me depending on the person. I feel that discrimination is wrong in general.

I measure 6 feet now, and I'm glad I stopped growing that fast. Seriously, I grew almost one foot in one year, it gave me erniated discs.
My life isn't as great now, can't do much activity without feeling an horrible pain in the back, I even have difficulty to sit, I am simply never comfortable. (Even while sleeping)

Well, I hope I stopped growing, I don't want to be taller, and some people indeed make fun of me, I'm uber tall where I live lol. tongue.png

I hope you never get erniated discs. KUbAnTY.png

I don't really find anything wrong with making height jokes so long as they are not malicious.  You also shouldn't make jokes about someone you don't know, you never know how they're going to take it.  Better to be on the safe side, I say.
