Pony Weapons

I haven't seen anything about how ponies defend themselves. Magic is only good if you're really skilled, just flying in to tackle has it's risks, and running in head first is just as dangerous so...

 

What do ponies have as far as weapons?

 

My first guess would be lances.

Well, if every other creature has to get in close to attack then there shouldn't really be a problem with a full frontal tackle.

The Royal Guards are chosen from the strongest and fittest of ponies and it is there duty to guard Celestia but no creature, apart from dragons, has any real ranged abilities so the guards just have to be uber strong.

 

Plus, how would they hold said weapons? I've probably invoked the wrath of the Sticky Hoofs picture but in all seriousness ponies would need fully functional hands to hold weapons. I mean, the show isn't that close on the whole physics thing but I think they'd draw the line at ponies being able to hold swords/lances.

 

For ponies to have weapons they would need to look like. . . . this.

This xD! As far as being completly canon, not much can be said as far as weapons though... I think the closest we're gonna get is Season 2 Episode 11.

The only canon weapons I've seen so far are spears (held by the guards) and cannons (if Pinkie Pie has one, why can't soldiers have the real thing?). I assume that if they have cannons, they attempted to work with rifles/muskets of some sort, but found them too hard to aim with their hooves.

Well, in Appleloosa they use apple pies as weapons. Karate exists (I am still waiting for a Chuck Norris pony) since the cutie mark crusaders tried it out for their cutie marks. Scootablue (a background pony that looks like Scootaloo in the classroom) has a bow and arrow cutie mark so archery exists (though I would love to see how an earth pony pulls that off with hooves).

As for ponies handling weapons, it is obvious that their hooves do have some kind of "grabability", lest at least 1/4 of all they do, would not be possible.

 

Just face it.

The recoil from firearms though, may make them impractical to fire, unless they are ground-supported, or at least fastened to a body harness.

Well, if not spears and shields, there was always that episode taking place in Appleoosa. I mean, apple pies are pretty deadly... And if you mean to lethally take out an enemy... well there was this one idea that came from Ask Aquilinus: Wing Swords, the ability to make one's feathers sharper than any blade using a Pegasus's innate magic ability.

I bet they have only spears, because what else would they be able to hold? Cannons, yes, but the soldier ponies are running the risk of dropping an artillery shell on their buddy's hoof, and that would be complete chaos. And firearms are illegal in Ponyville. So let's just see what happens to Ponyville once the Covenant attacks Earth...
