I wouldn't say that I hated it, but it was far too drawn out. Some parts I probably could have skipped.

Shattering Glass by Gale Giles. We had to read it for English and it was like a bad Lifetime movie in book form. When it came time for us to analyze it my report was 2-3 full pages of tearing it apart because it was full full of plotholes, bad characters, and strained my willing suspension of disbelief because so many characters spent the book holding idiot balls  and the plot would have come to a screeching haunt and failed with the first act if anyone was two brain-cells to rub together.

The teacher gave me a A+ and thanked me for being honest about what I thought of it.

World War Z:

I agree it was not good. I didn't like how it was told as an after-the-fact report. That was so boring.

Oh man, do i have a series for this thread....

I should note that in a way i'm cheating a bit. This is a series that i began reading *because* i was told that it was bad, because i'm the sort of person who reads poorly-written works for their comedic value.

So i was walking with my friend one night, and she began telling me about the horrific quality of a series she read as a child, one called "Daughters of the Moon". I simply had to see how awful it was for myself, and i got through 5 1/2 of the 13 books in the series before even i couldn't stand it anymore. The writing was hideous, the characters were all shallow and useless, the magic system and overarching plot were laughably filled with holes, the writer employed every imaginable gut-wrenching cliche, and entire pages were spent on describing a character's outfit. If only i had one of these books and could give you direct quotes...

So yes, those were the worst. Even my love of laughably bad mary-sues couldn't save them.

Anything ever written by Karren or whatever that is Travis in any science fiction universe ever like halo where they compare somebody to a nazi.

Fuck you Karren. Or whatever your name is.

I only love you platonically.

As in plate tectonics.

As in two bodies sliding against each other.

Yes, thank you. I was going to say Romeo and Juliet and Lord of The Flies. I've never read Twilight and I don't plan on doing so, but I'm sure it's awful.

I once read a book that contained justifications for slavery, murder, incest, and genocide. The characters in this book often committed  depraved and horrific acts based on nothing more than the overt or tacit endorsement of a megalomaniacal and incompetent sadist. It's actually considered a classic, and indeed many people look to this book for guidance and law. There are even some who attempt to pass laws in our own country based on their interpretations of this book, whether or not the people bound by those laws are followers of this book. It's madness! Plus, it's not even well-written. A lot of it is pretty dry.

No one has the slightest idea what you mean. Clearly the poster was referring to The Art of War, not Harry Potter. Please learn your books.

I still stand behind my high school opinion, the Great Gatsby is a piece of crap and is incredibly overrated and over-analyzed. It's just a bad book, there's no reason to identify or care about any of the characters, the plot is nearly invisible except for the sudden (and I do mean sudden) death of Gatsby at the end and the symbolism couldn't be more obvious. Animal Farm had more subtle symbolism and it was writen as a children's book!

To put this in context, I enjoy reading and watching shakespeare plays and I'm no stranger to classics. I'd sooner do a 48-hour marathon reading of War and Peace than go through analyzing Gatsby again...

There is no limit as to how bad book can be, but I'll assume you are thinking more along the "mainstream" releases.

In that case, 50 shades of Grey. Horrible writting style, horrible story, horible concept, childish, naive... It's hard to name anything that is good about the book. I still regret reading it, even if it was just to see what the hype is about. I mean come on, it's not even interesting when it comes to the sexual ideas, it's like invading the mind of 12 years old. Bleh.

I had to eliminate fan fiction and self published works from what I would choose as well. It would be a little unfair because both tend to be populated by writers still learning how to craft, and there is a lot of self indulgence that hampers fan fic writers (even in the MLP fandom). And before anyone jumps down my throat, I support Independent Authors and Fan Fiction, but I feel like I wade through more stories that need a comprehensive structural edit in both the SP and FF worlds.

Now, I also agree with you on your choice. Once 50 Shades left the fan fic world and was picked up by a publisher, it becomes fair game. Pacing, inconsistent narrative style, uninspired characters, and the erotic scenes use some of the most ridiculous metaphors. I had dozens of, "What ... what?" moments throughout.

I also hated The Book of Matt by Stephen Jimenez not due to it's conspiracy theory subject matter, but because he ignored every rule about how to tell a coherent story. Even a historical non-fiction book needs to build off of each preceding thought. I think they published this to purposely keep him from ever landing a contract again.

Yeah, there are many "books" even if shorter and purely digital, unpublished form or rather cryptic and hiden tomes noone know that are truly bad and hold very little value, BUT it's a bit different case as it often is either a practice of writing skill, unskilled authors trying to share ideas and stories or simply a person getting their thoughts in order and then slapping it somewhere. It's fair to criticize them in a constructive way, but I wouldn't ever go into calling the bad as such, it would be very much like badmouthing tiny indie game developers for not having Crysis 3 graphical fidelity.

I pick 50 shades because it is oddly and in rather unfortunate way combining different worlds, it is a -bestseller-, very much so, at the same time, it has all the problems (mostly related writing skill I would say) fanfiction tends to have and last, but not least (and this is purely subjective) the story, concept and aim of the book(s) are just horribly bad.

The author's use of metaphors, let's call it, was almost physically hurting me at times. "The glorios pulsing sausage of love paddling the silky canoe of desire" style. Oh please. Not to mention I found the "He slapped her a little on the backside - SO HARDCORE!" made me feel like I stole a diary of some lonely puritan girl who read something about SM and didn't quite get it. I know, I'm being harsh, but then again, it is a bestseller and was marketed as something it most definitely is not, so I do consider it fair.

I honestly don't read that many books but of the few I have read Imma go with the Lord of the Rings. And for one reason: The pace was WAY too slow for me. I realize this is a personal thing more than it's about the book themselves but I barely got out of the shire 100 pages in. After having read a much faster paced book series like Inheritance (I had just gotten done reading the third book) I couldn't handle him spending two to four pages describing the same thing.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to read them. I already don't read that often anyway but I hold onto them because I figure "read the big/important ones at least."

In the end, I'd rather just watch the movies though.
