I'm willing to bet that most of the people bashing the South in this thread would get up in arms if you highlighted the overwhelming amounts of religious fanaticism, misogyny, racism and general backwardness that is exhibited by people in Middle-Eastern/Islamic countries

20 Degrees and around 15 inches of snow here in Kentucky. Back's still sore from shoveling the sidewalk and driveway. It's not normal for us to have this much snow, though the same thing happened about this time last year.

At face value? they're a good looking style of hat. But since I can't help but associate them with pretentious, pseudo-intellectual douchebags? I hate them.

iirc "gray" is how it's most commonly spelled in the US, and "grey" is how it's most commonly spelled in Europe. I personally prefer "grey".

I like both, but hamburgers make me sick a lot, especially the shitty fast food ones. I've not been eating as many burgers for this reason. Pizza has only made me sick on a few occasions. In general, pizza has more variety, is easier to store and eat leftover, and is much less strenuous on my digestive system.

movies/tv Why does it seem that most Bronies hate SpongeBob?
Omega Centauri replied to TheOneAndOnly543's topic in Media Discussion
It's not just the MLP fandom that's tired of it, it's just about everyone I know. I think we can all agree that it was among the most iconic cartoons of the early 2000's, and I absolutely loved it as a child. Even as a kid, though, I started noticing a major decline in quality a short while after they made the movie. I later found out that the movie was supposed to be the end of the series, and that the original director, Stephen Hillenburg, had left, but that was released when the show was near the peak of its popularity, so, naturally, they kept it going. Overall, they've run out of ideas. The episodes have gotten increasingly stupid, unsatisfying, and, in some cases, outright disturbing. They have too much of a focus on gross-out and slapstick humor now *cough*The Splinter*cough*. Patrick is still an idiot, but no longer in a way that is at all funny or lovable, he's just stupid, painfully so, in many cases, Spongebob is as well. Squidward used to be a dickhead that would often get his comeuppance toward the end of an episode, but now he's at the ass-end of every other joke in the show for no reason other than the sadistic joy of watching him be miserable. In general, the show has lost most of its charm and wit. If feels way more generic now than it did before. They don't even acknowledge the fact that they're underwater anymore. The more time passes, the more Spongebob feels like a cash cow that should be put to rest while I still have fond memories of it. I've heard the latest season is alright, and that's probably due to the return of Stephen Hillburg. Maybe I'll check it out some time, but right now I just can't be bothered with it. Between now and season 4, I've completely lost interest in it. -
Building a computer definitely gives you more bang for your buck, especially if you want a gaming PC, but there is a moderate learning curve if you're new to it. Among the main reasons you save so much for building your own PC is that most pre-built PCs are very under-equipped with their graphics card. So to get one with a graphics card fit for gaming, you'd have to spend more on all the other parts than you need to. And while there are pre-built PCs intended for gaming, they're still way over-priced. If you know how to build a PC, or know a friend who wouldn't charge you an arm and a leg to do it for you, get a custom one.

gaming The classic FPS gameplay topic

Here's to hoping that DOOM 2016 is way faster than the E3 presentation made it look. If not, well, DOOM 1 and 2 still have loads of user-created levels and mods that I haven't played yet. -

Currently in college, with a part-time job making dental appliances. I'm an aspiring musician, but if that doesn't work out, or I just don't make enough from it to live on, I should have a Computer Science degree to fall back on.

Off the top of my head, the only two words I can think of that disgust me on their own are "smegma", and "polyp".

I miss going to LAN parties and playing massive Halo CE matches with my friends. LAN parties are seemingly an ancient practice by now.

So, "broad taste" is synonymous with "good taste"?
-
Like I said, I can see where you're coming from, but I believe, no matter how many variables and statistics you consider, someone's musical taste cannot objectively be considered better than someone else's. Unless if the other person likes modern country music :^)
-
I'm sure there are people who enjoy country just as much as anyone enjoys rock. Are you saying the study could determine which genre is objectively the best based on which listener got the largest dopamine boost? Would it be averaged out? Different people respond differently to different kinds of music. Maybe there is some biological influence; if that were the case, which side would be considered superior in that aspect? Perhaps it has to do with the environment they were raised in, same question to that one. You can't give a right or wrong answer to something like that. Nothing is just black or white, music is the least so.
-
I know, which is why I also said: The amount of enjoyment someone gets from listening to a song boils down solely to what kind of taste they have in music.
-
I see where you're coming from, but I strongly disagree. You can't judge a song by how popular it is, or how much money it made. By that logic, every musician that doesn't release albums and just performs live or plays as a hobby is utter garbage. There are plenty of great musicians who released great albums but never quite took off for one reason or another. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin used to be some of the most popular musicians out there, but few people listen to them today. Does that mean that their music used to be good, but is not good anymore? Nothing's changed about their music, so why would the quality of it have changed? The only way you can judge a song is by how much you, as a person, enjoy it. The amount of enjoyment someone gets from listening to a song boils down solely to what kind of taste they have in music, and there is no good or bad taste in music, just different taste. Some people like it when the music they listen to is raw and unedited, some like it when it's carefully processed to sound perfectly clean. Some people like simplistic, easy-listening, some people prefer huge, complex symphonies. Just because more people prefer something doesn't mean it is objectively better. The majority isn't always right, and in this case, neither side is right nor wrong.

People need to realize that global events and politics affect pretty much everything I really hate when people say "I don't really care about politics", or "It's none of my business". Like it or not, it is your business, even if you don't think it affects you at all, it most likely does, or will in some way. I know a lot of users here are fairly young, and currently see no reason to care about politics, the economy, or world events as a whole, but the older you get, the more obvious its effects on you will be. Educate yourself, pay attention to what's going on in your country and abroad, develop your own opinions. If you're going to vote in an election, make sure you vote for the person who you think is the best candidate. Vote based on the individual, not the political party.
-
We talking about new country music or old country music? I like old country music, but despise most newer "country" musicians. Either way, I like Rock better. I'm confused. Are you trying to say that one genre of music can be objectively better than another?

Is Summer or Winter good where you live?
Omega Centauri replied to Sky Knight's topic in General Discussion
I live in Kentucky, just in the right spot where I get the worst of both seasons. A summer day can get to over 100 degrees Farenheit, and droughts can last for months. A winter day can get to well below zero, and a week-long ice storm is not unheard of. -
Which Linux distro should I choose?
Omega Centauri replied to Rainbowdash_82's topic in Media Discussion
If you want something user-friendly that's not a pain in the ass to install/maintain, I'd recommend Manjaro as a starting point. -
I play guitar and bass. I've been wanting to get a drumset, but I would have absolutely no place to put it. Same goes for the piano, although a keyboard would probably suffice for now.

I'm sort of the same way, music with vocals can invoke emotional responses from me, not so much because of the lyrics, but more because of the way the vocals sound along with the instruments. Opeth's latest album "Pale Communion" is a good example of this. The lyrics are abstract and difficult to interpret at first, but Mikael Akerfeldt has a great singing voice, which is really given a chance to shine on this album, and you don't really need to understand the message to feel something from it. The musicianship is all around damn near perfect in my eyes. They managed to write complex songs that don't sacrifice emotional appeal in the name of technicality, it has a huge dynamic range, distortion on the guitars is used sparingly, making it have more of an effect, they play a variety of chords with some occasional chugging riffs, each instrument is given a chance to shine instead of focusing only on the guitar. I would easily consider this a 10/10 album. Having relatable lyrics does help to make a song more emotional, though, Neil Young for example. His songs aren't the most complex, he doesn't hit many soaring high notes or insane guitar solos, but he has a message to get across, and he does just that. Some artists leave interpretation up to the individual, that's one thing I really love in music. It leaves something in there for everyone.
