What, if it is present, do you hate most in a video game?

>Wobbly cameras (Castlevania Lords of Shadow)

>Third person perspective with the camera really close to the character so you can't see anything (Neverdead)

>Quick Time Events (God of War)

>Regenerating health (Modern FPSes)

>Invisible walls everywhere (Also Modern FPSes)

>Replacing difficulty with lack of checkpoints (Demon's Souls)

>Repeating the same line of combat dialog over and over until I want to fill my ears with rubber cement (Spider-Man games)

Those too.

Mass Effect is the WORST for comabt lines.

Harbringer, anyone?

>Replacing difficulty with lack of checkpoints (Demon's Souls)

I'd debate(no, prove) that Demon's Souls isn't tough because of the few checkpoints. It's difficulty comes from the fact that the game is, by its very nature, TOUGH AS HELL. Really, after a while you don't tend to notice the lack of checkpoints because 1)You unlock shortcuts as you go through the level, thus making things not so bad, 2)The levels are often not that big anyways, and 3)lets face it: after you die a few times, you know what to do to make sure that you don't die again in that section, sans for some bosses and those few enemies that use really cheap hax.

Although, I will admit that the lack of checkpoints makes World 5-2 absolutely hellish. SCREW YOU GIANT DEPRAVED ONES AND BEING UNAFFECTED BY THE SLOW!

So most of what I hate has been mentioned... but you guys appear to have forgotten one thing.

Anyone HATE escort missions where you have to protect an absolutely brainless NPC who is utterly unhelpful and runs off into trouble all the time? And the moment you're not watching them, they get killed and you have to do it all over again? Sadly, a lot of games have awful escort missions like these. One of my biggest peeves.

Another one is a game that is so hard that it's not fun to play; it's just an exercise in frustration. I like a challenge, but not too much of one to the point where it gets ridiculous.

Also, a game with a fantastic story... and horrid gameplay that you have to slog through to get to the good parts. Vice versa doesn't bother me as much, but it is preferred that the games I play don't have an excuse plot.

And online multiplayer. A lot of the time, it's just full of douchey people who get waaay too into it and insult you because they can't see your face.

Ahhh brings back good ol' memories of RE4. Anypony other than myself like to shoot Ashley just for the heck of it?

And that pretty much sums up EVERY multiplayer game. I mean just try playing MW online sometime. If I had a penny for how many 5 year old brats who think they can swear and try and talk trash while I play online, I'd be richer than Bill Gates.

In FPS games, when you sometimes can hit someone with a shotgun 3 meters away, and then you hit someone with the same weapon at 1,5 metres and they don't die.

And people who demands that you get kicked for having actual skill.

Game-breaking glitches/bugs (fun glitches are fine, IE Red Dead Redemption flying through air): When I can't beat a part of the game and I have to make a new file, it angers me to no end... most notable would be Bethesda games like Fallout or Skyrim... I don't like when harmless glitches are patched though, a prime example would be Metroid Prime (hahahaha pun lolzz), the developers patched the discs so you can't sequence break, which is a very fun challenge IMO.

Lag: even if it is by a few milliseconds... it annoys me... it's a pet peeve of mine.

Bad Endings: Borderlands in particular is a great example, "Ohey lets go do all this stuff and blah blah *fights final boss*......... now what?"

Bad Controls/Motion Controls: I'm sorry, but I absolutely HATE motion controls. Sure once in a while it's a nice gimmick but I want to play my games and swing the controllers around however I want. Also bad controls... can't think of any modern games off the top of my head that I absolutely hate, but for example: Resident Evil 1... TURN AROUND!!! FASTER!!! RUN!!!! NO!!!!

Multiplayer in a singleplayer game: I'm sorry but I really do not like it when a singleplayer game shifts it's focus from single player, to multiplayer. Prime example would be Assassins Creed. It just feels like (to me) that developers are focusing more on the multiplayer aspect than the story (I felt this way about brotherhood, never played revelations but from friend's complaints I would assume something similar)

Long loading screens: sure my computer has long loading screens but thats cus it's really old and such... but if I'm playing a game and I have to wait 10 minutes to start a game, I get annoyed... come on already!

Lack of "New Game+" or "Hard Mode": I like challenges, so when I beat a great game, I want something else to get me to play through the game again

Boring characters/horrible story: Metroid: Other M... need I say more?

Replay value: I want to be able to come back to the game in like 3 days and say "hey let's play this again!", notable example would be pretty much any of the Tales games, they're so long, but I'm always willing to play through one again

Silly objective quests: "Oh no! Can you pick 157 carrots for me? I'm lazy!" "Oh thanks! Here's $1 for your trouble"

Un-balanced things.

Bad cameras.

Bland textures (it's ok if it's an older game, but i don't like it in new games).

Poor optimization (lagging and using more resources in areas then the game should).

Overly complicated or poorly integrated UI systems (i do like a lot of options though).

Games without enough sound options (I HATE not being able to just turn of certain things like dialog without turning everything off).

I'm sure there's more but these are some of the bigger ones.

  • 2 weeks later...

Playing Mario Kart DS on Download and Play during school trips was the best... until you got the whiny people. I was beating all the girls in my class and one of them kept whining various things like "I WANNA WIN!" and "STOP HITTING ME WITH ITEMS!". So I quit that game and happily came in the lower ranks with the boys group. I'd rather lose than listen to someone whine about how they're losing.

Girls "I have a blue shell, but I'm not gonna use it cause I like you." (Also the girls never call the items the right things... It's a BULLET BILL not a ROCKET... yeah it kinda makes me mad xD)

Boys "Blue shell's coming first place! Sucks to suck like you!"

Other things I hate...

-I enjoy a challenge. But when a game gets difficult too fast, it makes me angry. (mostly iPod games with this one)

-When there's nothing to do but level grind until you can beat the next part (Pokemon games)

-Bad graphics and repetitive sound

There are 2 things I really hate in a game:

* Brevity - I can't STAND short games! I love games with a good storyline that I can really get into, and it really gets on my nerves when a game is too short, and it seems like the developers just got lazy and ended things too quickly. There are a few exceptions to this, like arcade fighters (Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc.), but if I buy a game for plot, I'm looking for something that'll take more than an hour to finish. (Which is why quit Gears of War after the first game)

* Ring-Outs - I know this doesn't apply to every game, but it's still a major killjoy. Nothing ruins an epic battle quicker than one guy falling off a cliff or into a lake. Ring-outs have been keeping Soul Calibur from being one of my favorite series ever, because nopony wants to have a fight end anticlimactically just when things get good, because either person makes a mistake and falls off-screen. More games should incorporate a free-fall combat system like Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, where even if you get knocked off the edge, the fight continues in midair and you eventually land on another stage.

I totally know what you mean. The ring outs are similar to my one hit kill hatred. Also, Brevity gets on my nerves to. I love LOZ becuase most of those games take forever to complete. I also like the game Skies of arcadia, because not only is it long, but you can be really strong or weak depending on how you play.

  • Unavoidable one hit KOs
  • Endless combos
  • Obviously unbalanced characters
  • Short gameplay
  • Poorly written dialogue
  • Pointless unskippable cutscenes that you can't skip

  • Poorly done cell shading
I actually dont mind revisiting places again if the enemies are harder or changed. Otherwise, it is a major bore. The looping soundtracks get on my nerves as well, but if its an awesome song, I can deal with it. I feel you on the copy protection crap. Cell shading done poorly totally distracts me when I play games. Also, I hate it when there are no sidequests as well, unless the game is extreamly long and has an interesting story line.

Games that come out every year OR SOONER with only one or two small tiny changes! That is was absolutely destroeid Guitar hero! They had 5 Guitar hero games come out in one year... WAY too much. And sports games are the worst. I do have some sports games, but when they come out every single year. All they change is the player's names. Rediculous. They may ad one or two small features but it's no where near worth shelling out another $60.

That's more of an industry thing though... not sure if it fits :?

To avoid all of these things, play Alice: Madness Returns. It was VERY under-rated, and an absolutly amazing structured video game! I have never been playing a game and thought "wow! This is f*cking video game! I'm playing a game on the screen" But that is in a good way! I thought that while playing and i loved it! It was amazing!

I am always nervous to buy a video game based on a movie. The only games that were based off a movie that I actually liked were the lord of the rings games. I love those games. I played those games with my older brother for hours on end. We were unstopable. It was great.

I hate it when introductory/tutorial missions last forever and you don't get into the actual gameplay until a good couple hours into the game. This also applies to when reminders and "tips" pop up constantly throughout the game.

dont play skyward sword then. I would have given the game a 10 out of 10 if not for the CONSTANST tutorial from your sword fairy person. Also, EVERY time you get low on health, she reminds you that you have low health. Im all like ," Yeah, no crap, I can hear the beeping and see the low health!" so I give it a 7 out of 10

annoying AI/badly scripted AI

unskippable tutorials

un-editable controls

games that is just ported from console to pc

unskippable cut scenes

Re-makes of shitty games ( the cod series, they make 1 good game and they continue pumping out the same shitty game for years just with some new textures and maps)

I have never really been into the COD series. I have played it once for ten minutes. Didnt like it. Also, sometimes bad AI can lead to some funny things. Like an enemy that will run in a circle if you are in a corner, or enemies that will damage each other if you get between them and another enemy. Its awesome. But othertimes the AI can get pretty annoying. Play Dark Souls, the AI in that game is amazing.

In racing games, I hate if the AI randomly gets faster to catch up with you and slower when in front of you, It's so annoying when you are driving LeMans in GRID and on the long straight, the guy behind you flies past with a speed his car can't even go and brakes(including braking lights) as soon as he has passed you.

In shooter, endlessly spawning enemies that force you to rush forward are a total atmosphere-killer.

Also if a game's too easy and has no difficulties to set(In the Forza4 career it's just awkward when you race the others in the ground everytime, especially because F3 had difficulty settings and the game is awesome except the easy AI)

Checkpoints that are set very stupid(like for example in GTA4(you drive to a certain point, there is a cutscene with an action scene following. You die and you have to drive there again)

In RPGs I hate Kill-Bring missions und boring sidequests

PLay extreme G 3, not only will the other cars not do that, but if they do somehow get ahead of you, they will keep going faster, and you can shoot and destroy them :)

Unbalanced characters on fighting games, main problem I had with MvsC2 along with it's online mode were everyone spammed the hell out of magneto and sentinel.

Unskippable cut-scenes, I spent approximately four hours watching those damn monologues from the original Kingdom Hearts.

You mean When you had to fight Riku? I know! I hated that. After the 13th time watching that scene I was so fed up with listening to them talk.

I don't know how any of you enjoy any games at all with such long lists of "Dislikes" xD

The only things that annoy me are unskippable cutscenes, unPAUSABLE cutscenes, stupid checkpoints (****ing first Ratchet and Clank game), games that practically force you to do the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over until you finally do it perfectly and get past it. I don't mind it for a little while but eventually it gets old. Games like Resident Evil (Oldschool) or Demon's Souls are the worst offenders of this and as much as I have fun playing the games I'll never beat them because of their asshat difficulty.

True, those games are hard (or in the case of Demon's souls, the hardest game on ps3) but, when you do actually beat them, you get a huge sense of accomplishment.

I just crossed off the ones that I don't agree with.

But really, how do you play old games with a list like this? That's like... all of them.

Also, apparently none of you like Super Meat Boy or IWBTG, because one hit kills all over the place.

Those games are based off of the idea of one hit kills. Thats different. In an rpg or games like that, one hit kills are just annoying.

I could never deal with the Idiot NCP's, so I never did a non-essential escort mission. I actually like extreamly hard games, it makes it more fun when you end up winning. The story line is a major reason for me playing the game. If the story sucks, I find it hard to like the game. Regardless of actuall gameplay. Thats kinda why I dont like online multiplayer games. Becuase there is no story, its just mindless killing.

why in every fps shooter game

pistol ammo capacity: 250

magnum ammo capacity: 18

COME ON GIVE ME A BREAK

If they gave you two hundred and fifty magnum bullets, the game would become to easy. They cant OP you or else the game is ruined. Thats why the weak weapons always have tons of ammo, where as the strong ones have little. Read a book on game development and they will tell you all about the game difficulty and player power relationships.

Not being able to skip or pause cutscenes. I've missed out on major plot points more than once because I had to go do something in the middle of an unpausable cutscene >_<

Also, save restrictions really bug me. I don't like having to find a save point somewhere or lose an hour of play. If the game has a suspend or quicksave option (quicksave anywhere, but as soon as you load it, it deletes the quicksave.) as well, then save points are fine.

I know what you mean. I had to deal with similar situations with a game called Phantasy star online, where you cannot pause the game... ever. One time, My mother called me right as a boss started. So I had to run downstairs and quickly explain to my mom that I couldnt help at the moment because I was fighting a boss and couldnt pause. She understood, and let me run back upstairs, where luckily I was still alive, but not by much. But later I found a solution to that problem, just open up the disk cover, or pull the game out, it will pause the game and tell you to reinsert the disk, just reinsert it whenever you are ready to play again.

One game I love, and am actually replaying as we speak, is Skies of Arcadia Legends. One cool thing about the game is that because of the battle system and the game settings, I can litterally set the controller down and walk away at any moment, and come back later without having to worry about the game going on without me. The cutscenes always have tons of talking, and the talking doesnt continue unless you press A. So if you dont press A, the cutscene doesnt progress. I love it. I set my ship to attack and stuff, then I will go get a drink, and by the time I get back, I will be able to attack again! I love it!

A few of these came from my playthrough of Shenmue.

- Not being able to skip cutscenes. Its really irratating if you die you go back, but you have to watch the entire cutscene again.

- Slow and tedious gameplay. Shenmue was very bad with this. It was a big story, but it took waaaaay too long to play through it, mostly because you have to wait for events to occur, and I mean wiat. If the game says "Wait until tomorrow," you're waiting at least half an hour in real time for the game to advance. Its even worse when you have a limited amount of money, or nothing to do except stand in the middel of the road like an idiot. Shenmue 2 fixed this to a degree, but it still feels tedious.

And a few others

- CLIFFHANGERS. If you're going to end the game on a cliffhanger, either come out with a new game to end the story, or come up with a book or comic strip that explains the end. It doesn't have to be a game, but at least finish the story.

- Autoscroll. I'm looking at Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum here. IIn battles, after yu choose an attack, the text will scroll automatically after a few seconds if you don't do anything. This is nice, but, if you step away for a moment, you'll miss some critical information, and could come back to see a fainted Pokemon. But, when you most want it, like during Cyrus' speech, its not there. You have to manually scroll the text. At least give me the option to autoscroll it so I don't have to sit there and listen to blahblahblah. Goes with cutscenes above.

- Use an item, then OHKO. Another Pokemon one. So, the Gym Leader pulls out a Full Restore and uses it. Then you do the same thing to your Pokemon, but immediately after, the rival will use a move which normally won't do much damage, and its a critical. Bam, the Pokemon you just healed is now fainted.

-Not taking time to finish a game. If there's one thing I like about Valve, its "Valve Time." It gives them the chance to work on a game until they're ready to release it. Take Sonic the Hedgehog on 360/PS3, and you'll see someone really screwed up. Instead of giving themselves more time to develop a game on a new set of consoles, they set a release date and stuck to it. The game is incredibly buggy and glitchy as a result. If you're not going to change the release date, pull a Sonic & Knuckles, when they split Sonic 3 up into 2 games.

I am with you on the cliffhangers. I love stories, but hate when a cliffhanger comes and I know that there will be no resolution. It sucks. In a game skies of Arcadia, I was fighing a boss that kills my characters really fast, but I have revive and healing items galore. Unfortunatly. She would often kill a character right before I was going to heal them with a different character. Because of that, the character will use a really expensive item on themselves when they really dont need to. AS for auto scroll, I dont mind that as much, I just dislike slow speach. I can read really fast, so alot of times I get annoyed that they are speaking so slow. I like in skies of arcadia, they will have a whole paragraph of speak for a character instantly pop up, and when you are ready to hear more, just press A and instantly another paragraph pops up.

Games that still have a stock system, like most Sonic games! Having a set number of lives is troublesome, and it's a pain to end up back at the start menu after dying so many times. I'm glad most games have evolved beyond that feature, but there are still a few out there that refuse to get with the program...

I know what you mean. It wouldnt be so bad if the lives would reset everly level or something, but im most cases they dont. I actually dont play many games with lives though. I more play RPG's and games like that. By the way, do you like the show Firefly, cause your name is that, and I am wondering if you named yourself that because of the show, or the insect?

When your playing a part of a video game thatis really intense, but it is so easy to screw up that if you are thinking of something other than that for just 1 second you're screwed.

Dont play TOHOU then. The whole game is so intense and impossible. But I stlll love that game.

Ah, escort missions. The bane of nearly every gamer's existence.

- Similar to escort missions is stupid partner AI, especially when said partner suddenly becomes einstein when he's paired against you.

- Massive amounts of backtracking between two or more areas with no shortcuts. Twilight Town and Creepy Steeple come to mind in that regard.

- New game+. If the game is long enough and can be mostly completed in one go, then this is fine. But if the sole purpose for this is to shamelessly pad-out the game by replaying the exact. same. game just on a different difficulty...the word "tedious" comes to mind.

That reminds me of Tales of Symphonia. You have a character Richter that is your friend and on your side who is kinda strong but not really. But at one point you have to suddenly fight him, and he is like 3 or 4 times more powerful. What the buck man? Also, I actually like new game plus on really fun games. Like the metroid trilogy, even though the different difficulties were the same exact game just with enemies taking more hits to kill, and you taking more damage, it was still really fun to be challenged more like that.

Having a limited inventory, especially if it is small. It is such a small and simple thing but it makes the game a lot less enjoyable when you cave to constantly choose what to keep and what to drop.

Sounds like you are describing Resident evil 4

The stock system has been the bane of my adventure game enthusiasm for a loooong time now... It looks like they've finally phased it out of most games, but I'm still waiting on a good number of perfectly respectable games to get rid of that one annoying property called 'lives', so they can finally be as close to perfect as possible!

And to answer your question, Fenrir, I've never heard of the show, actually. My name comes from my OC, and he was named FireFly because of his abilities. Although, I just looked it up, and it does look interesting.

I take it you don't like it when Phantasy Star Online takes ALL of your money for dying, Final. xD

Also, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days does that if you die, they ask you if you wanna temporarily lower the difficulty. I always say no, of course, because if I started on that difficulty I'm gonna do it on that difficulty.

I know right! I hated that in PSO. But in the ulitima server, they got rid of that. So I always carried all my meseta around with me in that game. But on the gamecube version. I would always telepipe back to the bank before going to a boss. Especially with dark falz or vol opt

Its pretty awesome, but short. Its definitally worth a watch. If you watch the series (its on netflix by the way) then you can watch the movie serenty, which takes place right after the series. ONe of my favorite series. Josh WEiden worked on it I am pretty sure.
