_Kurtis 636 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 (edited) I honestly get really annoyed when Bronies start bashing on the older gens and saying: "Blegh! This is complete trash, Friendship is magic is way better!". It's pretty annoying because a lot of people act like FiM is a God sent cartoon and it saved the entire generation of cartoons. Like, seriously? The older gens had some problems but so does FiM! And don't even get me starting on the FiM toys... One other thing, most people judge the older gens by comparing them to FiM. Like, when they watch G1, they might say: "Ewww! The don't look like FiM ponies, they're too chubby and horse like!". ReverseFaller 2,483 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 I don't really care for the earlier generations. I don't dislike them, I just don't watch them. You have to appreciate the early gens a least a little bit, since without them Friendship is Magic wouldn't be what it is today. The Coffee Pony 1,390 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 (edited) Actually most of the hate is directed at G3 and G3.5. Yeah there are those that hate G1 but there are a lot of bronies (such as myself) who like it as well I just have no interest when prior generations with toys and characters that look a lot uglier then the current ones and that often share names but have little in common with the current incarnation. I mean does a Frank Miller / Christian Bale era Batman fan buy into the same 60's Adam West / Burt Ward era Batman? Surely not. There's partically no similarities. Actually you'd be surprised, there are a lot of people in the Batman fandom do enjoy both eras myself included. Both eras are very different but still loved by fans both old and new. Hell, the Adam West Batman show is loved so much that DC decided to continue it in Comic Book form. The comics are fun by the way. If you haven't read them, GO AND READ THEM NOW!!! Argumedies 1,748 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 (edited) A lot of the hate is derived in the fact that most didn't live in those time eras and all they have to compare it to is today's standards and they're two completely different worlds. I myself have and I grew up watching not just G1 points but a whole shelew of cartoons back then. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that ponys of all things would become what it is today. Hell look at Transformers, their cartoon animation was just as bad back then. Now look at them on their forth movie. TMNT was another. I say let them hate, they're all just a bunch a rookies when you boil it down anyway. As for myself, I'm happy that mlp made it to the big leagues of pop culture Edited June 21, 2014 by Argumedies
Banul 3,831 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 I haven't seen previous gens, so do try not to judge them. I don't plan on seeing them, as the art style is kind of a turn off for me. That said, I always assumed that gen 1 must have at least had some merit, as it spawned additional gens.
RockinRarity 1,605 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 most probably have distain for it because most of the grief bronies get stem from the ignorance of people not knowing the differnce between the different generations. Its sort of a faceless target they can strike at. Yup, pretty much this. Before FiM, the people who give the previous gens hate now probably wouldn't have bothered to spend any time/energy hating on the previous gens. But because, especially in the early days of being a brony, people associated bronies with liking the (mostly awful and excessively girly in all the wrong ways) previous generations, they have developed a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to the previous generations. Part of that is actually stemmed in bronies' own ignorance of the previous generations, particularly Gen 1. I don't think that anyone needs to watch anything besides Gen 1, however. Tommy Oliver (Bronycurious) already has a few videos criticizing some episodes of My Little Pony Tales, and there are a few videos out there of bronies making fun of Gen 3.5 movies. And no one needs to expose themselves to the Gen 3.5 Newborn Cuties. Not. A. Soul. For the love of Celestia, the only thing more horrible than the newborn cuties is, um, I dunno, I guess Satan himself would be the only thing I can think of. Bits of Gen 1 are worth watching if you know which one to watch. If it's not your cup of tea, I understand. 80's cartoons aren't really my thing either, probably because I was born in 1989 and I don't have nostalgia for most of those cartoons. But it is good to know the source material for much of what is represented in Friendship is Magic. 1 Follow my blog! ~The Mind of Sally - Experiences, Opinions, Musings~
Jennabun 1,579 June 21, 2014 Share June 21, 2014 (edited) I haven't thoroughly watched the previous generations, but I am absolutely in love with the toys. My little sister was really into MLP during the G3 era, so I have a fondness for G3 and I collect some of the toys. I simply adore the color and design of the figures - they are really quite beautiful. I feel like the toys are of a higher quality than G4 toys (though I do collect those too). I also do a little bit of G1 collecting (mostly just the plush), but I haven't really gotten my hooves into G2 at all. I agree that people carelessly pass negative judgement on the previous generations sometimes. You can't go into it expecting the vintage ponies to look, act, and be similar to the G4 ponies - the show occurred through different time periods and appealed to different audiences back then. I just appreciate it for what it is - some good ol' nostalgia. I think there's something to be said for appreciating the show's roots. You don't necessarily have to be in love with the previous tv shows to just appreciate the nostalgic value! Ziggy + Angel + Rain 11,302 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 I only vaguely remember watching an earlier gen as a kid; I watched everything from He-Man to Voltron to Rainbow Brite to Care Bears when I was leetle. I harbor no hatred for the past gens; FIM is just the gen that GOT me. And sometimes I see choice clips from, I think, gen 3 that are a unique mix of hilarious and terrifying that... Almost make me want to see it. xD And I actually used to own some past gen ponies. Because reasons! I didn't know any of their darned names or anything, though lol. Everleaf 541 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 (edited) Myself I am interested in the past generations and I can take a liking to G1 as the writing was pretty well done in that we would not have fim if it was not for G1, G2 may not of had a show (My little pony tales in actually kind of 1.5 or a G1 series) however the G2 toys had been very elegant and I seem to actually like them G3 writing may be a little sloppy but I gotta give them credit since I used to watch it back when I was younger bronies need to realize G3 was aimed for the younger crowds so you can't expect the writing to be that good and I do like the toys in that collect them along with the other generations, I got to say though 3.5 was pretty sloppy written however as I said it was not aimed for (older fans) but more to the fans 2 to 5 and in a way it is (kind of) cute. so I am cool the the other generations and I got to give credit so don't worry I'm cool with the others I would not even know ABOUT fim if it was not for the other gens. Justin_Case001 4,897 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 Honestly, I don't care at all for the old gens, and I don't think they were very well done. And, as I never saw them as a kid, they're not going to have any nostagia value for me. So, zero interest. But I certainly don't hate them or give someone flak for liking them. It sounds as though many bronies are rude about this kind of thing, and that's not very cool. I certainly don't have a problem with anyone liking any gen, and I respect the previous gens, because without them we would have no FIM.

Mand'alor Dash 2,224 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 Respect must be earned, and those three were responsible for turning what was a franchise with a revolutionary vision into a laughingstock. No offense, but the original vision for the franchise was bright, neon horse toys... with tramp stamps. Even gen 1 didn't really cover any new ground when it came to 80s saturday morning cartoons. Jeric 46,854 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 No hate for G1. Born in '77 so the Sunbow/DIC/Filmation animation was no stranger to my household. I don't remember much about the show, but I do remember seeing it. I did have a kid sister just a few years younger than me so G1, Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Jem, and all were on the TV. And like I said earlier RBP, when someone says G1 Transformers was garbage, a little piece of my heart breaks. So I do know where you are coming from. Dr. Frasier Crane 319 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 (edited) I liked G1. I watched it when I was little and I honestly enjoyed it, and I wasn't a 'girly' girl. Plus it has a strong 80s vibe to it, which I love. G3.5 is just mind-numbingly awful though, I think everypony has to admit. Adachi 772 June 28, 2014 Share June 28, 2014 The first, original gen, was actually darker and less innocent at times. I mean, ponies getting turned into dragon slaves? Plus, I think one pony even got killed (read that Majesty got killed). I liked G1. I watched it when I was little and I honestly enjoyed it, and I wasn't a 'girly' girl. Plus it has a strong 80s vibe to it, which I love. G3.5 is just mind-numbingly awful though, I think everypony has to admit. If you mean Newborn Cuties, then I agree, although the chibi one where they're not babies wasn't half bad. Haven't really watched it much though. “I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man’s reasoning powers are not above the monkey’s.” — Mark Twain
Denim&Venöm 19,151 July 8, 2014 Share July 8, 2014 Generation 1: Haven't seen it but have heard good things about it. Maybe one day I'll get around to watching it. Generation 2 (tales):Haven't watched it nor intend on watching it. From what I gathered, it lacks what got me into FiM. It's a middle school drama set in an exact mirror image of our problem laden world, but with ponies instead of people. No magic, no adventure, no no character growth or depth, no relateble lessons, no escapism. Just fillies trying to score dates w/ colts and spread rumors about eachother. And for a 90's cartoon, it didn't really have that good of animation & voice acting. Generation 3: This is the only other generation I've seen. I managed to snag two G3 tapes at a garage sale. And honestly they weren't that bad. I didn't go in and watch for the same reasons I did w/ FiM. The animation was pretty good. The music score was nice. The voice acting was decent. And the story was simple and to the point. And I enjoyed watching them. It triggered that youthful, fantasy driven part of my brain that still thinks anything is possible. I just sat back and chilled out. Generation 3.5 should not be lumped in w/ G3 for any reason, as G3 deserves better than that. It doesn't matter if your audience consists of 2-5 year olds, it's still your job to put out a quality program regardless. You want your audience to look back on your product w/ fondness, not questioning why the ever liked it in the first place. It just seemed like the studio wasn't even trying and Hasbro wasn't even caring.
