Anyone Else Think Christmas is Overly Hyped?

I think it is overrated in some aspects, especially when people decorate everything a month and a half prior to the actual day. Sheesh :P

If you think likewise or have different reasons as to why you feel Christmastide is overwhelming for you, feel free to share.

Christmas means different things to different people. Some really enjoy it as a time to look forward to, whilst others may not share that sentiment it's at its core just something to feel positive about.

Everyone needs a reason to feel happy every now and then, that's why I think Christmas is and always will be important to people.

Heh, I know what you mean, some people will even decorate their house in Christmas decorations in July.  Really makes little sense to me why you would do that.

Yeah, I think so myself. But even so, I actually think that there are still some people that understand what Christmas is meant to be. If anything, I find Halloween to be more overhyped than Christmas. I've only met at least one or two people who know what Halloween is meant to be, but everyone else? It's a day of silly horror pranks for them. Halloween is in my opinion a boring holiday that is as much of a cash grab as Christmas is.

Not as overhyped as it is overly commercialized. Seriously people get greedy around this time of year and it's all about what they're going to get for Christmas. It's all but lost its traditional meaning. I don't mind giving and getting presents for Christmas but I do mind it when people expect things for Christmas. You should give because you want to, not because it's expected of you. That's not a gift from the heart and it's got no meaning. I think my family has learned to not ask what I want for Christmas or birthdays or whatever because I don't expect to get anything. It makes getting something that much more meaningful and it keeps you from being disappointed if you don't get something.

As far as decorating early goes, yeah. That's a little over the top. But then again, I hate decorating. I'm too much of a minimalist lol

You get presents.  Therefore: Awesome.  I'm atheist, and even I like it. xD  Besides, it's nowhere NEAR as overrated as Arbor Day.  People absolutely LOVE Arbor Day...  Don't they?  Do they?

...What's Arbor Day again???

Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees

Quick Wikipedia search, basically a "be kind to trees day," I guess.

I'd say Christmas isn't really overhyped, just that they start way too early. I've never understood why they start putting out Christmas things when Halloween hasn't even fully passed. I'm not looking into anything Christmas until some time after Thanksgiving.

Christmas isn't overhyped, it is however completely over-marketed. It has gone from being a deeply sentimental/spiritual/religious experience into a corporate feeding frenzy mixed with a massive dose of materialism.

I  guess some can definitely over hype it. But for me I simply love Christmas for what it means to me & being able to spend time with loved ones. Really I don't mind anything else, I do think at times it can be way blown out of proportions at times.

But I love this time of year & Christmas has always been a nice holiday for me.

No not at all. Now I don't know how things go in USA, things are probably a bit different over there but I think that Christmas is one of the best days of the year. I always have such a good time with my family. Since I celebrate with the people on my mom's side and my father's side at different days (we like to do it this way since we become way too many people if everyone comes at the same time), I get to celebrate it both the 24th and 25th.

I love christmas decorations. I put up christmas lights on my whole house, it looks rather cool.

Kinda like this note, this is not my house. just a random google pic

The only thing, if something, is that they start to sell christmas stuff like in the end of september already which makes no sense to me, but that's pretty much it.

...And to be honest, I kind of like when people make holidays a big deal. It's kind of cool if you ask me.

I believe the over-hyping is justified when there are small children involved. It's like taking them to Disney- my then-7-year-old cousin cried during the fireworks on his first visit, going, "I do believe! I do believe! Dreams do come true!" For Christmas, going all out on lawn-and-tree decorating, making gingerbread houses and listening to Christmas music makes it all the more magical.

Now, I'm not really for the idea of telling children that it's okay to expect a magical man to bring them whatever they want- when I have kids, they'll be raised believing that Christmas is about gift-giving to and from people who care for each other, and being with family. And I'm not going to spoil them with a million toys, either :P

Well sorry if I upset anyone with this.....

Christmas to me doesn't really mean anything. It's just another day of my crappy life and nothing changes except the season annoys me to death. To me these days it's just about making the less fortunate feel bad by people always talking about the gifts they got and the parties they went to and the food they ate. Not to mention that it is WAY OVER HYPED. People get overly excited about the holiday by decorating their houses a month prior and with stores selling Christmas decorations right after Halloween ends. It's pretty annoying and overwhelming for those who don't celebrate.

There's also the problem that everyone believes that everyone else celebrates Christmas and immediately asks someone like me why I don't. It's just a day, it's just a freakin night, just respect the person's decision and there's no need to inquire about their reasoning. I simply don't celebrate because I never grew up with the holiday to begin with. Also these days it'll just be a cause for sadness rather than joy. This year I lost the one person in my life that really truly loved me that was actually with me. This Christmas was especially hard on me because of that. I missed my mom very dearly especially with everyone talking about their Christmas parties and visiting family and having a good time.

I unfortunately don't get the meaning of Christmas because it simply doesn't apply to me. I don't have a family to truly spend the holiday with unlike everyone else. I also don't like how others feel pity for me when I tell them I don't get gifts or don't celebrate. It honestly just makes me feel worse because I feel even more less fortunate than they are :(

So yeah...Christmas sucks. Just another commercial cash grab anyway -_-

Sounds like my opinion. Only with Valentine's Day.

For decades, I've felt that Xmas is for little kids & people who have little kids.  Some of my happiest memories of childhood are of us kids helping our  mother make Xmas cookies (We got to help Mommy make Xmas! YAY!!).  Now, I know Mom hated to cook & considering the time involved, the hassle, & the clean up, she would much rather have just bought the damn things at a bakery.  She did it for us.

Now, I cheer the Grinch before he wimped out & think Scrooge was right "Bah, Humbug!"  I think the dividing line is when you start thinking clothes are a good gift.

There are good reasons the suicide rate jumps over the holidays (or so I've always heard).  Like I said, strictly for kids.

It doesn't really mean much to me so I say yes, however it means a lot to my family so I participate in all the traditions like the Christmas parties(3 in one night :okiedokielokie: ), Church(I'm sorry, but I'm Atheist), the Christmas movie, etc etc. For the most part I dislike Christmas as I just think what exactly is the point of all of this, but I can't deny I like spending time with my family nor can I deny not enjoying gifts. I'm kind of ranting, but yea it is way over-hyped, Christmas doesn't mean what it used to(In the majority) and I just feel it is just another celebration to well celebrate for the hell of it, the only real upside is what it does for a lot of the community(I mean the needy) and allows for time to be spent with the family.

Yeah, I think it's over-hyped, or mostly just over-commercialized. :okiedokielokie: However, I realized that we have a choice of whether or not to get wrapped (:P) up in it; it's hard to look past all the commercialism sometimes, but I just tried not to let it bother me and instead focused on friends and family :)
