I'm pretty sure that Luna and Celestia was born as Alicorns.

Source?

And even if they did, then you would have to be related to them in order for you to have the gene that makes you a alicorn. And we all knows how well those OCs turns out.

Oh right, the thing that doesn't exists in the canon world.

Also how the hell are you born with half a horn? Or as a alicorn for that matter. It isn't a gene or anything like that.

It was a small gene from his mom, and his entire family tree is Pegasus, unicorn and some earth pony. But mostly Pegasi.

I see. So he was born with a broken horn because of a genetic disorder.

However that still doesn't explain how he was born an alicorn.

I'm surprised that nobody made a comment like this earlier. Anyway, what's wrong with having an opinion on something that someone else created?

Which brings me to another thing this community does that's starting to get on my nerves. Not so many people just enjoy the ride anymore, they've gotta analyze and criticize everything. Did the creator of the OC ask for your opinion? Say the creator was some nine year old fan who drew a picture of their OC, gave it a backstory, and worked super hard on it. And then, without thinking if the kid cares for the "sanctity of canon", the fandom dog-piles on the kid, telling them their OC's not good because it's an OP/UP alicorn. Not only did you ruin the kid's fun for no good reason, but you make them shy away from participating in the fandom due to a fear that people are gonna bully them for having fun again.

And that's just what your opinions tend to end up as: bullying. Most of the time it's really subtle, but look where it's gotten us. We've got a stigma against alicorn OCs, and whenever someone tries to break away from it-- actually get creative and let their imagination take them places they've never been-- we tell them, "No, you can't do that because it differs from what we're used to." or rather, what we prefer.

They don't deserve that. Nobody does. You know why? I have seen just as many-- if not more-- terrible unicorn, pegasus, and earth pony OCs as I have legitimate (not for laughs) alicorn OCs. But even if I didn't personally like the OC, I let the creators be because they were just trying to have fun, and it's terrible when someone brings unwanted criticism when you're trying to do that. If you've got nothing nice to say and nobody asked for your opinion, don't say it.

I've replied to this thread on Everypony, and I'm not afraid to say it again.  Both of my OCs are alicorns, and I'm proud of both of them. And unlike most of you these days, I actually sure as hell enjoy the ride, and never critisize or give out my opinion when I think it could come off as bullying.  Y'all have done this for far too long.  It's time to watch the sameness end.

I've got one OC of almost each race and let me tell you: It's liberating not to conform to what most of the fandom considers "right" and "wrong." Seriously guys, how does a random stranger's character effect you in any way? They have just as much a right to enjoy themselves as you do, and if it's an alicorn OC that's somehow related to Princess Celestia and Luna, let them be. I don't care if an OC doesn't work in the canon because let's face it, most of the stuff this fandom produces wouldn't slide. It's rather hypocritical to target one group who are just trying to enjoy themselves.

The nasty attitude the fandom has towards alicorns infuriates me.

That is until that person slips there OC into your roleplay, you say no because it's completely not canon and is pointless, and then they argue to death with you about how they should be aloud in your roleplay. Or when they show off there OC to everybody, and compare it to other OCs, hailing it as a better then yours if not the best.

Alicorn OC's are a cliche and unorignal way to give your OC special qualities. Some people take their OC's very seriously, writing out long backstories and such so that they are legitimate and canon. Then a 5 minute alicorn OC walks in and kick your OC's ass in every way in a roleplay? Or the owner of the character claim their OC is better then yours? Nope, I don't think so... Not saying this is all people who own a alicorn, but I'd say a good amount.

Which brings me to another thing this community does that's starting to get on my nerves. Not so many people just enjoy the ride anymore, they've gotta analyze and criticize everything. Reading everyone hate Alicorn OC's makes me want to make one. I'll probably be drawing one up today or tomorrow. xD!

In my personal opinion though, I think there's nothing wrong with an Alicorn OC. Yeah, they're supposed to be rare. But if someone is just having a bit of fun, whatever. But at the same time if you don't want an Alicorn OC in your roleplay, let them argue to death about how they should be allowed, and ignore them.

Two sides.

I've RP'd since I was 12 (Now 22. Oh joy of getting old) and I've ignored plenty of people trying to do things that I don't enjoy or allow in my RP's. However I haven't had a Pony RP before. Maybe it's different.

Indeed it is. Brony roleplayers tend to be a lot more sensitive, illogical, and immature. Not saying that's all of them, but a certain percentage. It's hard to find a good roleplay with ponies sometimes if you don't know people, and when a whiny kids decides to hop in to a group you have established, they tend to stress things out. Your OOC is for discussing the roleplay, and so many times have I gotten people whining when you deny their OC's. Sometimes alicorns, other times other non-canon, overpowered, things. It just is stressful and turns the attention off the roleplay.

The thing is... Alicorn OC's are not the first or last thing to be hated on. People have opinions. Trying to say this in a non-asshole like way, but deal with it. Deal with the hate, and they'll just have to deal with your OC's. People will always disagree, and I doubt the end of all alicorn OC's is ever going to come. Oh no, people's opinions offend you...?

Yeah, but at the same time, they are kids. They are immature people. You can get mad at them all you want but in the end there's next to no point. I also don't understand why they won't just find a new RP if you don't like it. I've personally never been declined from an RP, but I would be so embarrassed that I wouldn't sit there and argue I'd hide under my desk xD.

I must say that they are normally gorgeous OC's. I think Alicorn's are absolutely beautiful. Might be a factor in why they're made and people want to use them.

And let's not forget to mention that it SCREAMS originality!

You can't run away from a roleplay you created. That doesn't end well. You usually don't want to either, since making a RP can be a lot of work. Not here, but in other places I RP I usually make my own roleplays because I find it easier and more fun for me. If a little kid makes a alicorn OC, then fine. Whatever. But that doesn't mean I'm accepting them into my roleplay!

'Give them a chance, Star-Lord!'

Uh, no. They can find someone on their skill level. I sucked at roleplaying once. I had a shit OC once. I roleplayed with people that also sucked and had bad OC's. We grew until we could have proper, canon, legitimate OCs. Just because your young, doesn't mean you can do something wrong and get away with it. Use this as an example. 5 year old draws a car, and the mother praises it and puts it on the fridge though it looks more like a bunch of scribbles. 5 year old draws a car, enters it into a professional art show... Do they let it win just because the person who drew it was 5? Do they put it in a frame and put it in a museum? Do they praise it? No, of course not. They give a small compliment to not be rude and walk past it like 'how the hell did that get in here?'

same can be applied to OCs

I think they are better looking honestly. You're coming off as rude and arrogant because you hate Alicorn OC's so much. There's nothing wrong in it.

But once again, this is a PONY Roleplay, not a freakin' art show. People learn through mistakes and whatever. You don't run from it, you ignore them. I'll show you how to ignore someone.

You'd swear this was rocket science.

I'm not a fan. There would have to be a truly compelling reason for their existence, or I'd just kind of have to roll my eyes at them. They usually just seem like they're the creator's attempt to make them special by making them the rarest and most power pony type, instead of spending the extra effort developing an interesting Earth, Unicorn, or Pegasus OC.

Source?

And even if they did, then you would have to be related to them in order for you to have the gene that makes you a alicorn. And we all knows how well those OCs turns out.

It could be changed in the future, but a few facts still support it:

- Lauren Faust planned for Celestia and Luna to be the only alicorns and for them to have been born that way.

- The concept of "ascended" alicorns came about with the introduction of Princess Cadence and Princess Twilight. Cadence is an ascended pegasus in supplementary material where she came to truly understand the magic of love, and Twilight ascended when she came to truly understand the magic of friendship.

- Now if all alicorns are the same, then they'd all be immortal like Luna and Celestia. However, after Twilight ascended, the creators confirmed that she would NOT outlive her friends (and I doubt that means they're going to alicorn-ify the rest of the Mane Six). If Cadence became an alicorn in the same way as Twilight, then that statement should apply to her too.

So the common belief is:

Celestia and Luna: born as alicorns, immortal, super powered

Cadence and Twilight: ascended to alicorn status, not immortal, super powered but not quite on par with the royal sisters

But yes, I agree that if you're born as an alicorn, your parents would have to be natural born alicorns as well.

If your parents ascended, you'd likely just be born as one of the three normal races.

I have never been a fan of Alicorn ocs and I have many reasons. For one they tend to be either Mary Sue or just plain overpowered. Because of that, people also try to make them underpowered in some sort of way. And yes, there is a way to do an Alicorn just right, but even then you should only use it in an AU. Alicorns are supposed to be a very rare thing in Equestria. There are only five in the entire country for goodness sake. So in general they just don't make sense.

On top of all that, I feel like people who make Alicorn ocs are trying to assert dominance in a sense. Alicorn are considered more powerful than the other mlp races and it seems that by making yourself one is you saying that you are better then everyone. Now I know that is not always the case but it still comes off that way.

But of course I can't tell anyone who their oc can and cannot be. This just my opinion on the matter and is not me saying that anyone with an Alicorn oc is bad.

I've got a LOT of Alicorn OCs, but purely just for artistic purposes; they don't have personalities or anything like that, they're just pretty to draw. I think that kinda thing is the draw of Alicorns, outside of their power; they're incredibly pretty, what with their wings AND horns, so people just want to make their OCs look as nice as possible? That's always been the opinion I've held, at least:catface:

You're full of reason most of the time, shads, but funnily enough now the canon has misfired and just destroyed its own hoof with the epilogue. I know this post I'm quoting was made almost 5 years ago, but is rather interesting to see how the canon haber and company was demolished by their own lame writing xD
We were shown an aged mane 6, but the only one that didn't look like old hags was Twilight, pretty much taking the "She won't outlive her friends" statement down.

Is also interesting how this belief crumbled down like a cookie after McFlurry's birth. She's one of the biggest questions left about the FiM universe. Why is she a born alicorn? The common belief on alicornness as a non-genetic condition didn't age well, which is something I myself lament since alicornhood became a less special situation and seems to work randomly.

Now, in my very own opinion, alicorn OCs should be avoided at all costs, and in case it can't be avoided to have one, procure extreme caution. They are meant to be the most special kind of pony, and apparently you must do something of way greater proportions than merely saving the world several times (since, let's face it, if saving the world was just enough all of the mane 6 along with Trixie and Glim Glam would be alicorns by now) to be alicorn, unless you're a princess' child.

Having said that, I find most alicorn OCs to be cringe worthy and written lazily, and I'm not even poking at their design.

Hey, them breaking their promises doesn’t make me less full of reason.

But yeah, the fact that they broke their promise about Twilight outliving her friends irritated me a bit. But like you said, that post was made years ago, with the information we had at the time.

So with the current state of things, my conclusions/headcanons about alicorns are thus:

  • I still believe Celestia and Luna are natural born alicorns from an actual former alicorn tribe. They said Flurry’s birth was unknown to Equestria, but who says the sisters are FROM Equestria? It was founded by the uni/pega/earth tribes.
  • ALL alicorns are apparently immortal, even ascended.
  • The alicorn status CAN be inherited. Natural failsafe so that alicorns will always exist perhaps?
  • I still believe ALL races can ascend, and males can as well.
