There sure are plenty of troubling theories and problems surrounding Microsoft, more specifically around Windows 10, some of which might not be as baseless as we like! I cant help but think I should mention it ... but at the same time, I worry about troubling people over it.

Warning some of this stuff may greatly concern you if you are sensitive to such issues, however please be advised that it may not even be a real issue (because it could be all baseless speculation), they could however, be important topics to at least be aware about.

I am sincerely sorry if I have made anyone worry about it, or uncomfortable about this information, I am saddened if I have caused any trouble :( . But I felt that people have the need to know! I have thoughts of making a separate thread due to the nature of these sensitive issues.

#1 Privacy concerns. There are a great many people concerned over Cortana and feeding who knows what kind of information to Microsoft, and the cloud, I would only be more concerned about that if it is not encrypted information, which I sure hope it is. The part that really instigates people is that Cortana may be listening in on what your doing whether being used or not.

Extra Information: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-privacy-settings/

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/28/windows-10-wifi-sharing/

My opinion: It may very well be an actual problem. Services these day really try too hard to integrate everything from interests to location, and Cortana even has a feature to let people know when your out and about (though I am not sure on details of this but I assume it has to do with a windows phone). Until we get clarity, and some Cortana basic functions without it listening to everything outside of using Cortana (which in itself may be a baseless speculation).

#2 Policy surrounding pirated games and "Unauthorized hardware." http://www.myce.com/news/windows-10-updates-can-disable-pirated-games-and-unauthorized-hardware-76883/

My Opinion: The policy of pirating games does not particularly concern me, though I worry a little about my DRM free games from humble bundles or gog.com (both of which are completely legitimate). I am already tired of many "platforms" launching to confirm my game is legitimate, I like steam, so I have no problem with it, though account security is always something to be cautious of, lose that and suddenly your entire library goes *poof* until you get it back, and thats IF you do. It is because of that I like DRM free options, or physical copies. Now though, if you have something from Ubisoft you need to install the game, run steam, then run U-play, and register it to Uplay. just to play your game. Then there was also the EA downloader deal (which is now Origin by the way). I am glad that at most things stop at two steps. but how happy would you be if it kept going?

Unauthorized hardware however .... That could be a problem. What about people who have to use Motion Joy to get their non-microsoft/logitech controllers working, like say PS3 or PS4 controllers? There has never been a good competition for a good PC gamepad, but with the release of Xbox One controller drivers for windows 10 ... I am skeptical of their intentions with "unauthorized hardware" which had better not extend to keyboards, mice, or home made things (That last part does not concern me much, but I know of some skillful people who make their own adapters, wires, and even some rudimentary drives or speakers, you ever seen a hard drive turned into a speaker? It is amazing! I definitely would not appreciate losing that due to the restrictions on such resourcefulness!

I think it's pretty good in my opinion. I turned off as much of the privacy sharing stuff as I could, but I'm not overly concerned about that anyway. After all, the NSA spies on us regardless of which OS you're on.

Honestly, I'm not super informed or educated about computers and such. I just know how to use one and that's it. All that technical mumbo jumbo scares me off. As long as it works semi-decently, I'm good.

However, Windows 10 did not work semi-decently for my computer, a brand new computer that was purchased for me not very long ago.

I tried upgrading and it was...buggy. The bluetooth settings especially were unacceptable and it was basically impossible to connect my headset. I'm CONSTANTLY switching my headset on and off. The interface is nicer than Windows 8, and it loaded faster after a time. But the bugginess got to be worse over the days, and my internet was loading EXTREMELY slowly. Pages would just refuse to load for no reason. Then the start menu stopped working.

So I had to have my fiance manually fresh reinstall Windows 8 because it wouldn't let me reset back to it. I will stay with what I've got until I'm sure the bugs have been ironed out and Windows 10 has been around for a while. Not going through that harrowing experience again. Although I sure do wish Microsoft wouldn't subject us to a product that hasn't been completely and fully tested. It wouldn't even install on my fiance's computer. Making people their beta testers... I'll let everyone else be the beta testers and benefit from their impatience. I just hope they update that damn bluetooth someday. It's annoying even on Windows 8, but at least it works.

On the bright side, my computer's pretty much a bit faster since the reinstall anyway. And I don't really think Windows 8 is as bad as everyone says (start menu is easily resolved by paying five bucks for Stardock's Start8), but that's probably because I was stuck with Vista for 5 or so years before getting a new computer.

I forgot to post this earlier

Last Thursday I got a notification that my upgrade is ready so in Friday I upgraded.  The process was pretty seamless and pain-free for me.  Overall, I like Windows 10, I wish the privacy settings were opt-in instead of opt-out and I wish that you didn't have to go into the registry to enable the Dark Theme, I like the look of Windows 10, especially since I have barely used Windows 8

I'm upgrading exclusively for enhanced gaming performance. I couldn't care less about everything else.

I'd say that upgrading is a good idea, since DX12 comes with it.

i did this as well so far GG love it i have it on my $2000 gaming/twitch streaming rig

I've still been on the fence about upgrading so far. Is it worth it for a high-end gaming rig? Is there enough support out for 10 yet even with DX12 or does that alone make it worthwhile?

Is it worth it for a high end gaming rig? Not yet, the main issue is motherboard compatibility I would think. Though mine works more or less perfectly, the only windows 10 drivers that have been released are audio drivers, which I haven't bothered installing because the old windows 7 drivers still work perfectly.

As for if there is enough support for 10 with DX 12, its only natural it is! that is the key feature the OS is capable of. The problem is video cards and games with DX12 support or availability. No that alone does not make it worthwhile, that is, unless you feel it would.

Ah, thanks. :) It was hardware compatibility I was primarily concerned about, I just haven't really heard much of 10 being of any great benefit in that area yet. DX12 sounds all well and good, but yeah, I'd rather wait till it has more support before bothering with the upgrade. 7 does the job fine for now.

Anybody having their wireless card become useless after the upgrade? I'm seeing tons of posts and articles in google talking about users losing network connections because there's very little support or drivers for win10 for their wireless adapters. I'm having the same problem. What are you doing to solve this if it is happening to you?

I had this problem after doing a clean install on my laptop. The network worked fine when I chose to keep my programs during installation.

Still running 7...for now. I may or may not decide to upgrade in the near future.  I've reserved my copy on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine.  Would be nice to  rid myself of my pirated copy of Win 7 Ultimate though.

Pretty sweet that MS is allowing pirates to upgrade as well...but I guess, they can't really tell the difference if an OS is pirated or not...

So, i upgraded to windows 10 a few days ago, here are some problems i have encountered so far:

During installation it would hang on "Preparing for upgrade" without making any progress for a few hours, i sorted this by deleting all the update files, rebooting and redownloading everything, it made me redownload them twice though, after that the install went fine.

On first boot it seemed determined to use my other account on my PC rather than my main one, keep this in mind when you set everything up if you have multiple user accounts.

Second boot i got onto my proper account, everything seemed off resolution wise, it seems asthough it wasnt using my graphics card, instead it used my intel gpu, after a patch from nVidia everything worked fine there.

A while later, an update message seemed to crash everything and cause a reboot, after the reboot a patch applied and everything seemed fine.

Today, i immediately booted a game after my PC booted, the game took its time booting for some reason then when it did boot i closed it immediately, this gave me a black screen, i had sound but no image, i sat on this screen for about 10 mins before i decided to just do a hard reboot on it and everything worked fine after.

Software wise, the only issue i have seemed to face is GoPro Studio not working, it doesnt seem to want to import my video files from my GoPro, not sure if this is just an issue with my software or GoPro or an issue with a conflict with windows 10, but keep it in mind if you're using a go pro and import with the software, it could be experiencing issues right now.

So the good bits?

The new features are pretty awesome, im loving the Xbox App, even if all the features dont work 100% right now, everything looks sleeker and my PC is booting much faster now, some of the features came in hand to reduce boot times by looking at what applications are starting on boot and using alot of resources, allowing me to disable the ones that are not 100% necessary to start immediately.

Overall i am pleasantly surprised with how good Windows 10 is and would recommend it if you're willing to get your head around some of the problems, alternatively wait for it to be a little more stable and then upgrade later.

TL;DR: Some major issues installing, some minor issues with reboots, overall pretty damn good, get it if you want or wait until the problems are fixed entirely.

I am thinking about upgrading to Windows 10. I also wonder how broken it is? Can't be worse than my Windows 7 installation, can it?

Been using win 10 since august 2016. You should check if your hardware is supported and there are drivers available for Windows 10. If your pc isn't older than 5-6years you shouldn't have any problems with compability issues with windows. Also btw if you prefer Windows 7's ui check out openshell, classicshell.
