Third time redrawing this...

I just finished this piece the other day and I know the clouds are sort of at a strange angle but my hand is sore so I'll fix it later. But what do you guys think about the picture in general? I'll take the cruelest criticism you can muster, as long as it's constructive and makes sense! I tried to make the sky a little more realistic, and I was trying out a new shading style on the ponies. It was originally slightly blurred, but I changed it to be plain cel shading because apparently it looked weird the other way? 

 

It's my dream to be a vendor at a convention in the future, and I'd like to know if this would make a good print. Thoughts?

I think this drawing is very beautiful =)=)=)=)=)=)=))==))<3<3  I love the texture of the ponies smooth coloring  and the cute shine from their hair  makes it really look beautiful and pleasin my eye, the clouds and background are looking  awesome though the ponies maybe stand out from the background too much since the clouds look bit more blur but im not sure about that =)=)=)=)=)

The clouds look like fluffy burnt marshmallows. I find it odd that Scootaloo's mane isn't blowing back like Dash's is, looks a rad bit too neat. But I do think this would make a good print and it's very nice!

 

Also I think it would be nice to make the front clouds clearer but the hind clouds blur

If you're looking for advice, then I'll give you a few tips.

 

Perhaps you should make the poses of both Dash and Scoots a little more exaggerated. Seeing as how Dash is flying quite high, you should perhaps make Scoots cling onto Dash's tail harder. Make Scoots' back legs a little crossed too.

 

Two more tips I will give regarding Scoots is make her mane and tail get blown by the wind and have more fear from her expression. Both of these, along with the exaggerated poses I was talking earlier, give an overall vibe of nervousness, seeing as this image is more from the orange filly's perspective. As such, it makes your viewers think that if Scoots is going to make it. Oh, and with all of these tips, I would also suggest for you to put more of a reassuring expression for Dash, seeing as how she wants to have trust to her friends and supporters.

Yeah their manes aren't flowing properly, Scootaloo's is near stationary and Rainbow Dash's seems to be pointing forward.

 

With the way Scootaloo is looking down I'm assuming that's the direction of the ground. So the clouds orientation is off since they run long ways perpendicular to the ground.

Especially all the detail in the wings, the mane and tail..

The shiny parts make it look even better..

The shading.. The clouds.. The proportions..

It's all awesome and well done..

 

I think the clouds look fine how they are.. After all, Rainbow tends to fly as fast as possible

And if you think "But Scootaloo is looking backwards :/" Well.. she could be looking back at Ponyville.. which could be miles away by now xD

K it looks nice. Though I feel that their bodies position doesn't really feel right.  And Scotaloo's face just feels a bit off for me. Maybe you should try to make her eyes look bigger.

-It should probably be the same thing with Scoot's hair and it would probably help to make her tail similar to how Rainbow's looks

-Rainbow's front legs are placed too high along her body. They just need to be moved down a tad. My thoughts on the design/ my opinions (This is what I see in my own mind of how the picture should look like. You most likely envisioned it differently, so keep it to how you want it to be drawn, but if you find anything written here interesting and decide to try go for it.):

-I don't know about the place where Rainbow's tail starts. It just looks weird to me.

-How do hooves work? I would have Scoots embracing Rainbow's tail instead of pressing her hooves together on it to cling on.

-I don't see Scoots as looking behind her, but looking at the ground beneath her.

-It also came to my mind of how cool Scoots would look holding onto Rainbow from her neck and Rainbow with a grin on her face.

 

I'm sorry if I offend you in any way. Your drawing is absolutely beautiful with how much work must have gone into getting the correct positions, shadows, highlights, and colors. You've done an incredible job and if your work is as good as this I can see you being a vendor not too far in the future.

I drew it back in like 2012 and everyone's seemed to really like it, even though I've always thought it looked weird and the anatomy and shading didn't make sense. If I could figure out how I got the colors to look like that I might redraw it.

Maybe you've seen it before it's my second most popular picture I've ever made for some reason. And it was on EQD, and some random business website used it (erasing my signature) on their page, and I emailed them about it but I'm pretty sure they never took it down. I don't know why.

 

Oh, and I think I drew it in December 2012 too, which is the month when I drew the most pictures in one month I ever have. 28 deviations, to be exact, though I probably have more in storage (I put ones I really hate in there). I was pretty inspired that month

So, BEAUTIFUL PICTURE. Love it. But I think you already know that it's absolutely great and wonderful. 

 

So, just a tip or two, although I'm no art crtic. 

 

- Rainbow's Mane looks kind of weird to me... like, it should be positioned differently. 
- Rainbow's legs should be moved up a tad. 

 

But besides that, absolutely Fantastic.

While I do agree that the anatomy isn't the best, the reason it seems to captivate many people is because it's between two characters with a touching bond. One bond that many fans love and can relate to. Seeing that this old piece is from Scootaloo's perspective, some people (especially those with older siblings) can relate to her happiness to fly with her surrogate sister. It's also nice to see as Scootaloo always wanted to fly, which makes it even more heartwarming to see Dash help her out on what it's like. The new version doesn't do this due to the expressions and that how Scoots is clinging onto Dash's tail, and as such, loses the charm that people look for in Scootaloo/Rainbow Dash images.

 

As for Equestria Daily, it's probably a way to advertise your work, rather than "ooh hey here's some random art for you". If people saw this and liked it, then it would gain you more watchers. So really, EQD is a good thing as you're more likely to gain watchers who want to help you and assist you.

 

Here's a bit of advice - with your older images, how about you ask your viewers what they like most about the old version rather than feel embarrassed by it? Just because you dislike it doesn't mean you should expect others to hate it as well. I do the same myself - there are many pieces I made that I'm not too crazy over, but I never put them in storage as I understand why they're so popular. It's mainly because I done something that is favoured by many fans, or that I do something completely unique. Even if my drawing skills were less than stellar at the time, I still ask my viewers on what they like most about it, as it helps me what my viewers like and expect from me, as well as what I should draw next.

 

This may not help you much, but if it does, then that's good. But really, I see no point in hating it just because it's old. You were still improving at the time, so naturally there will be some mistakes that you needed to polish.

Hmm, maybe I'll take some of the more popular ones out of storage then...it's more that people didn't really favorite any of my art back then because I had next to no watchers, and also since I don't really draw as much nowadays, people only see my old stuff in the recommended or more from this artist thing on the side. I want to paint a little better picture of how my art skills are now. Maybe I'll pull them out once I update my deviantART enough.

Excellent! The colours and measures here are pretty much spot on! As for little details, some people have already mentioned them above me, but considering the altitude and no doubt speeds they're flying at I think next time you should have that show more in Scootaloo's pose, it just doesn't look like she's getting much wind in her hair there, it all seems very idle. It can be little details like that which really set you apart from others. Some people really appreciate it.

 

I'd say you're well on your way though, improve one step at a time as they say! I'd love to see more from you soon!
