Hello @King Mars,

Just to let you know, I have moved your topic from Creative Resources to General Discussion. :)

I've always been interested in trying out karate one day, but I only need the motivation to do so. I do know that my father is pretty good at it, however. He has two black belts.

It's not really martial arts, but I have been s wrestler for dozens of years.

Hey thats cool! I consider it a martial art, but I do like exchanging techniques and I made a mixed martial art I call " Stone Fist " it's just a mix of bone breaking, pressure points, wrestling, some ground and pound, Tai-chi and mostly boxing and Judo. But how long have you been wrestling? Also, what kind of training did you go through?

I been doing freestyle wrestling like in the Olympics since middle school. I'm not the greatest but I have made it to state a few times in high school. I lift constantly and have practice from October to the beginning of March.

I used to do American Kenpo Karate way back in middle school and high school. Now that I'm in college I've transitioned to Kung Fu and feel a stronger tie to it than I did my base style. (Not that I regret it, it was a good start.)

I used to do Tae Kwon Do when I was younger. Never really progressed too far in it, due to the instructor being a lazy shit. Got as far as 6th Kup before I got bored of it. It helped my reflexeses and taught me how to kick and punch properly, but...that's about it. I never felt like it actually helped me stay healthy or improved my self defense. I wish I'd done one of the more spiritual martial arts, or something based more around grappling and technique than "Punch dis ting, kick dis ting, do dese movements - duh..."

I know exactly what you mean, that's why I took up Kung Fu in the first place. My teacher makes it a point that we do Kung Fu not to fight, but to become better people.

If you want to get into the more spiritual and self-empowering arts, I would recommend looking at older schools. The closer the style or teacher is to the roots, the richer the nectar, so to speak.

I live in a small town in Ireland...there was Tae Kwon Do or nothing, unfortunately

There is online instructions. Private skype lessons. My teacher lives in Arizona and I live in Florida and I've learned a great deal from him. Let me ask you this though, do you regret learning Tae Kwon Do?

I'm pretty sure that my area has some martial arts centers, but they are likely just the standard mcdojos that I want to avoid.

For someone who hasn't actually gone somewhere to practice martial arts in years outside of home when I'm bored, I've been told I can kick and block pretty good. Hours of flexibility training has its benefits for kicks. :)

I practice my own blend of martial arts, but to list the predominate aspects:

Aikido

Shinobi (Ninjustu)

Escrima (Kali or Arnis)

Most of my art derives around deception and evasion, therefore, I rely mostly on Shinobi. Manipulate your opponent to waste energy so you can escape.

Little do people realize an inescapable fact: Time governs those who wish they had more of it. By wishing you could use it better, you govern time, and you can get all the time you'll ever need." — Starfall, Quillwaver

I don't regret it...it just wasn't quite what I would've liked.

I'm a yellow belt in karate ;;u;

My base style. No need to be ashamed, I never got past yellow belt either. It's like Mr. Myagi said when Daniel said he was afraid he didn't know enough karate, "better quality, not quantity."

Heh, I like the term "Mcdojo" I'm writing a story now all about the martial arts and "mcdojo" if not in name is basically a chain school where everyone can learn.

In my world, they aren't exploitative as much as "you get what you pay for." No one going in is expecting to be a master but it's a good base to have.

Not to doubt you but have you actually learned any of those styles from a teacher? I'm not saying you can't combine aspects of different arts but you need to have learned the arts in the first place that you are combining.

My brother was a (legit) former pro wrestler for 10 years, before he quitted for his new family. He also knew some amateur wrestling stuff that he taught me, which i mostly probably forgot. :P

Don't know if you call amateur wrestling as  martial arts thought, but it is used to defend yourself.

I tried learning from a teacher, but none of them... how do I say this... seemed genuine in what they were doing.

I'm self-taught in everything I do, and martial arts is no exception. I discovered that visualizations are mostly all it takes for me to replicate what the video (image, text, demonstration, etc.) contains. It took a couple of years to get to where I am now, but I am still working at it.

Well, bear in mind that words are but words until proven. Unfortunately, I can not prove them over the internet.

It certainly has aspects. I would only call it not a true martial art if it was so removed from reality that they didn't teach "illegal" moves. For instance I was on the fencing team in High School. I wouldn't say I regret it, but it was so focused on the sport aspect that they didn't teach moves like kicks or slashes with the foil, techniques that historical fencers did.

I'm not saying I think you are lying! I'm just skeptical of the effectiveness of an entirely self-taught martial art, especially one that appears to be a hybrid style. If you said you had learned escrima by yourself, I'd have an easy time beleiving you'd be just as effective as a student with a flesh and blood teacher. The combination just seems a bit unwieldily, especially since aikido, ninjutsu, and escrima have different philosophies.

Tai Chi and aikido, for instance, gel a bit better from studying both of them.

I am an honest soul Steel, trust me. :)

That wasn't to you, and I assume honesty on all bronies.

I have done some Taekwondo and some Ju Jitsu, but never a full course. I have been interested in more Korean martial arts. I would like to learn to be able to defend myself and build up my nerves if I should ever get attacked.
