Why did Granny Smith get younger?

Soaring Symphony

Did anypony else notice this?  Granny Smith looked significantly older in early season 1 then she does now. She's still clearly old of course but it seems like she's gone from being 130 years old to just being about 65. How???  How did this pony reverse her age?

It's magic!

Knowing this is Equestria, it's probably magic. No logic necessary.

Maybe the show's writers put her in as a random character at first until they realized they wanted to use her for something. Besides, you can never judge somebody's age on looks. She's probably the same age.

For a Watsonian explanation, she might've just not gotten a chance to freshen up in the first pic, so she looked worse than she was.

For a Doylist one...Espurr's probably right:  the writers didn't know they'd be using her so much in her first appearance.

In the S1 finale, The Best Night Ever, Spike mentions wanting to show AJ the princess's golden apple tree.

In Norse myth, the gods got their youth/immortality from eating the golden apples.

So: Princess Celestia's lived a thousand years by eating nothing but golden apples, and AJ sold her soul to the sorcerer queen to get a single precious apple for dear old Granny, slightly prolonging her life - but not by enough, oh, not by nearly enough.

Remember the episode with Granny Smith and The Flim Flam Brothers' potion? Granny Smith had that youth and vitality to her the whole time, it just took until later seasons for her to realize it and for her to feel younger and stronger. It works within the show's world.

Granny Smith is clearly a shapeshifter. If you remember on the apple family reunion, she can literally contort her face so that she looks like she hasn't aged at all... XD

Being able to polymorph your face is also something Pinkie Pie can do... and she is apparently related to her XD

Supposedly the paintings of Queen Elizabeth of England are not completely accurate.

In her old day she had the face much like anyone else, withered and wrinkled.

The painters dared not to paint a single wrinkle into the portrait

... just some food for thought that I remembered from this...

"Most pictures are painted to a romantic ideal, rather than as true depiction of the idiosyncratic facial features of the person in question."

Guys, this is what she looked like in her first appearance.

Which is the same as how she always looks. She only looked really old and wrinkley in Applejack's imagination spot and that one scene in Show Stoppers with Scootaloo. Those are the only exceptions, and she otherwise looks the same in season 1 as she does in the rest of the season.

The writers probably only made Granny Smith really old and wrinkly looking in Ticket Master because it was Applejack's imagination spot. She also imagined Sweet Apple Acres looking really rundown and then transforming into its normal state, just like Granny Smith turned into her normal state. This is probably a case of them making things look worse than they were and then turning them to normal, rather than imagining them in their normal state and making them better.

The use in Show Stoppers was probably not the result of the writers, unless someone can provide the script that specifically described Granny looking that way, and was probably just the animators using the wrong version for her for that scene.

Thanks Marimo! I don't have to add a thing, since that was pretty much exactly what I wanted to say. I do still question Applejack's astounding lack of tact for wanting to go to a Grand event just to shill apples! The Royal catering Union would sure have words to say to AJ.

It's Flim and Flam's tonic or she got a boost from Celestia's age spell after she did one of Celestia's favor. See Granny Smith is an undercover agent in the same branch as Bon Bon and is actually an assassin that takes out Celestia's political enemies. She acts like an old pony but is actually a lot more spry and healthy as shown when she can still dive from great heights.
