web The Fine Brothers are trying to copyright reaction videos

My reaction to Fine bros reaction series.

Teens react/ Kids react- not bad I guess, makes for good content, I suppose.

Youtubers react- I like this, kinda like bronies react, only It's famous youtubers, and its not pony related.

Elders React- Ummm... O-Ok I guess I can see how that could work out but this is kinda pushing it

Adults React- Are you kidding me!? It's just the original cast of teens react! What, Fine bros, couldn't let your original cash cows grow up and move on with their lives? Were their original reactions that amazing that you have to make adults react just to use them again? wow, pathetic!

Parents React- Oh, hear that... Its the sound of no one giving a fuck as you have officially run the react train so far into the ground that I'm surprised anyone even watches this pointless trite anymore. Seriously? Fucking PARENTS REACT!? You already have adults react, what the fuck? Whats next, Fine bros? OHHHH how about Pets React!

My reaction to Fine Bros trying to own reaction videos- Yeah good luck with that. This is about as stupid as when the makers of candy crush wanted to copyright the words, Candy, Crush, and Saga.

Wait... This was a reaction post... Oh WELP I guess Imma get sued by the Fine Bros now!

I didn't particularly have any vested interest in this, as I don't make, or really care about, react videos.

Then I heard about this lawyer who is fighting the trademark, pro bono.

And, for restoring some of my faith in humanity, I offered up my thanks via Twitter.

Apparently, whoever runs TFB's Twitter doesn't pay much attention when they browse the site. See below.

Well.....let's just see how long this holds up in court. Spoilers: not very bucking long. I enjoy the Fine Brothers, and react videos in general (especially react videos of people trying foreign things) but this is just plain stupid.

It all depends on how long it takes for someone to be willing to go all the way to court over this.  If and when that happens, this so-called 'copyright' is done.

I almost hope it does go to court at some point, because I think we really need a Judge to officially define the old and outdated copyright laws so people and companies can't pull this anymore.

So I look back on their channel and it appears they deleted both the React World announcement vid and the Update vid.

Either they're too scared of criticism or they're canceling it. Let's just all hope it's the latter.

Yeah they cancelled it. They just released this

A message from the Fine Brothers

Hello,

We’re here to apologize.

We realize we built a system that could easily be used for wrong. We are fixing that. The reality that trademarks like these could be used to theoretically give companies (including ours) the power to police and control online video is a valid concern, and though we can assert our intentions are pure, there’s no way to prove them.

We have decided to do the following:

1. Rescind all of our “React” trademarks and applications.*

2. Discontinue the React World program.

3. Release all past Content ID claims.**

The concerns people have about React World are understandable, and that people see a link between that and our past video takedowns, but those were mistakes from an earlier time. It makes perfect sense for people to distrust our motives here, but we are confident that our actions will speak louder than these words moving forward.

This has been a hard week. Our plan is to keep making great content with the help of our amazing staff. Thank you for your time and for hearing us out.

Sincerely,

Benny and Rafi Fine

*This includes “React,” “Kids React,” “Elders React,” “Lyric Breakdown,” etc. Please note: It takes a while for the databases to update, but the necessary paperwork has been filed.

**Content ID is YouTube’s copyright system that automatically flags content that looks like or sounds like copyrighted content. This mostly flags videos that are direct re-uploads of our videos (which is what the system is built for), but if you know of a video that has been claimed or removed incorrectly, please email us with “false claim” in the subject line.

Glad they realized it was a terrible idea and have apologized for it.

But the whole fiasco did a number on their rep, it's gonna be a while for them to recover...if they can anyway, the damage has already been done

Even though they apologized and canceled "react world" or whatever doesn't mean they'll stop hemhorraging subs.

Think I'll monitor their channel with some popcorn and watch it go in the toilet

At least they are not as stubborn and stupid as I thought they would be, nobody will trust them ever again and it is their fault entirely. Everybody knows they are only sorry because it blew up in their faces. Even though they came to their senses this issue is far from over as it is part of disturbing long term trend of nearly anything and everything being able to be copyrighted/patented and with well connected individuals and corporations being able to screw a lot of people over by making filing the right papers at the right times. There will be other cases similar to this in the future, Donald Trump tried to patent the phrase "you're fired" a few years back and Sony tried to do the same with "lets plays" and while neither were successful with how broken the copyright and patent system is it is only a matter of time before someone succeeds where they failed.

Darksydephil made a video on this. You know you've screwed up when one of the worst, narcissistic, drama magnet youtubers has legitimate criticism to levy against you.

I'm glad to see the subscribers dropping so rapidly. Hopefully they take it as a lesson that people aren't as stupid as they think. Their update video is the most condescending bullshit with a message more or less feeling like "sorry you filthy peasants are too stupid to understand what we meant in our original video". Doesn't matter how important youtube makes you think you are, you can't piss on people and expect them to thank you.

It's too bad reaction videos suck. Hopefully they do trademark them so we don't get those like five million mlp reaction videos made for each episode.

I hope that after all this, they won't get back any of the subscribers that they lost/are losing. They need to learn that actions have consequences, and if people are too easily forgiving then what's to stop them from trying to pull the same crap again?

When you couple this with the fact that they used school shootings for ratings, I think the loss of subs is going to stick. I don't believe their "sincere" apology due to the fact that it came days after the announcement so it's clear it's just hoping it'll stop the unsubs.

"We can look forward to looking back at this moment, to this video, with all of you, knowing this was where we all stood together, changed the way things were done, and created this first of its kind global community."

The whole internet stood together, and changed things alright. Just not the way they were hoping for

I was not surprised when I first heard about this a few days ago. They are just YouTubers who are trying to capitalise on their popularity.

Reaction videos are far from being the most original concept and the fact that they considered getting it trademarked shows that they would do anything to raise their revenue of an already successful network.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure trademarking a word doesn't literally mean nobody else can use it. It seems to me that Fine Bros were trying to establish a general brand with this move, not claim ownership of an entire genre.

Sorry, but it looks to me like the internet...

Actually no. They didn't. The Fine Bros wanted to trademark the entire format or reacting. They even tried to claim that Ellen doing a reaction video somehow was her ripping them off.

https://i.imgur.com/idasVMZ.jpg

If you watch their announcement video they flat out say that they are tired of people "ripping off" their format. I.e. anyone that does reactions. This wasn't the internet overreacting, this was two idiots who thought they could get away with a quick cash grab and it failed because people called out the bullshit before they were permitted to get too far. Honestly this is one of the few times where the internet reacted accordingly.

IF you read their appology well you see that they are planning to release this react world in the future after they have "fixed the issues" so they will most likely try this again but then keep it under wraps untill it's too late.

What Key Sharkz said and also, people were already getting content ID claims because of this, it was happening to numerous channels.

Also, I guess I can add this:

The internet has claimed another victory. Too bad terrible reaction videos will still be a thing though. Among other problems.

We also have the issue of the fact that TheFineBros capitalized on school shootings in the past, so they were never really "great people with high morals" to begin with. I think this coupled with that is going to damage them for the rest of their careers. If they get one more fuck up like this though, I'd say it's more or less over for them. They are on the thinnest ice imaginable and one wrong step will end them. They are lucky they survived this will 13 million subs, but one thing we've learned: the internet doesn't forget. This shit gets archived and it will follow them to their next miss-step.

They survived this, but it more or less is setting them up for a bigger fall in the future.
