And of course the apology itself:

I knew that it would eventually come down to this one day. Dragonball Evolution marked a very painful creative point in my life. To have something with my name on it as the writer be so globally reviled is gut wrenching. To receive hate mail from all over the world is heartbreaking. I spent so many years trying to deflect the blame, but at the end of the day it all comes down to the written word on page and I take full responsibility for what was such a disappointment to so many fans. I did the best I could, but at the end of the day, I ‘dropped the dragon ball.’

I went into the project chasing after a big payday, not as a fan of the franchise but as a businessman taking on an assignment. I have learned that when you go into a creative endeavor without passion you come out with sub-optimal results, and sometimes flat out garbage. So I’m not blaming anyone for Dragonball but myself. As a fanboy of other series, I know what it’s like to have something you love and anticipate be so disappointing.

To all the Dragon Ball fans out there, I sincerely apologize.

I hope I can make it up to you by creating something really cool and entertaining that you will like and that is also something I am passionate about. That’s the only work I do now.

Best,

Ben

I honestly am shocked that someone from Hollywood would not only apologize for crap quality, but admit they did something solely for the paycheck. I mean I give him a lot of credit for realizing his mistake and owning up to it, but wow. This is one of the first times in Hollywood I have heard of this.

I do find it cool that he actually came out and told it as it should be, because that film was awful. Even if the film was made on its own merits, it still would have been terrible.

However, this guy is a tad late on this. XD

The guy's late, but I still give him a lot of props for not only apologizing, but admitting he was only doing it for the paycheck.

Now if only everyone else who worked on the movie could do the same

At least as the article puts it: we can cross him off of our shitlist.

The only people who should apologise is those who wrote him hate mail.

It depends on the nature of the mail. If it's threats, then sure, but saying how they hate his work is acceptable.

You know that they say: better late than never  ;) . Still, the damage is done, and that won't stop haters from hatin', but at least I respect him for admitting his mistake, as very most people shift the blame to others (he did at first, but he turned around, and even less people do that)

And that's why we need writers who know and love the content they write about.

@@Key Sharkz: Are you planning to make a video about it?

Nah, mostly because it's such simple news that I don't even really know what else to say about it besides being amazed and that this is an inherent problem with Hollywood that isn't changing any time soon. Admirable that he finally admits it, but a bit late to the show I suppose?

As someone who haven't seen the film or the Dragon Ball series, could anyone explain to me what makes the writing for this film so bad?

I give this guy kudos for that. Like...there were sooooooo many negative reviews and reports...I even thought that movie was a flop. I mean...the storyline was completely wrong...the effects were...ok...but tying this to RL stuff isn't a good idea at all...

Goku goes to high school

It barely resembles the series apart from the name and the fact that the titular balls are in it. The writing takes a dump on the characters with them not resembling the characters in anyway, with the exception of Roshi who's still a perverted old guy. Instead of Goku being a happy little boy who lives in the woods, he's an emo teenager going to high school and having girl problems and bullies, Chi-Chi is the token popular girl, Bulma is a Black Widow wannabe, Piccolo is a Darth Vader wannabe and Mai works for Piccolo instead of Emperor Pilaf for some reason. Also it omits main characters like Krillin and Tien, but then goes and adds original characters like Fuller who's Goku's school bully

If there's anything good to say about Dragon Ball Evolution, it's that without it we wouldn't have gotten Battle of the Gods, Resurrection F or Super

I thought the Movie was okay.

It was a bad Adaptation, but the fact that the Movie was called " Evolution " gave me already a hint, that its gonna be different, so i expected something different and got something different. And i was entertained.

But, it shouldnt have been advertised as a normal Dragonball Movie, the Movie should have gotten a warning, that its gonna be very different.

He only has to apologize for the false advertisement, other than that, i thought the Movie was okay in my book.

Come on guys calm down...It's never too late to apologize...Just so long as there is an apology in the first place. Sometimes jerks only finally realize years later that they screwed up.

Well, i'm glad that guy made an apology to us fans. That movie was downright the worst thing i've ever watched. I understand how he wanted to make a good adaptation on the anime into live action, like what Michael Bay did to Transformers. I don't have anything against, live action versions of animated series, but sometimes the executions can be horrible.

Alright then. There are indeed still writers who think they did the job good and ruined the movie. And to be honest, Hollywood is the weakest link when it comes to popular cartoon franchises and video games. One certain game focused episode even caused a panic in the gaming community (it was also co-written by an infamous congresswoman who hate video games).

Of course The Last Airbender movie was a f*cking abomination.

Now if Lucas Arts would apologize for Jar Jar binks.

I think you mean George Lucas himself. He kinda admit he "went too far with some parts".

Japan, where Yo-Kai Watch's second movie has more success than The Force Awakens :umad:

Now let's get the sad excuse of the movie called The Last Airbender.

I wouldn't expect anything out of Shamalamadingdong.

He openly admits he didn't care if the adaptation was good  or bad. He wasn't a fan of the series.

Did it take him this long to realize he flamingoed up? I doubt it. This apology should have come within weeks of the movies bad reception, not years. But a late apology is better than no apology, I guess.

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!
