general Mystery of which gender

So I was talking to a friend and they made me realize something that I sometimes wonder. Who here ever gets looks from strangers or questioned on what gender they are?

I've heard kids, parents, strangers you name it ask what I am?

Do I mind? Heck no. I find it funny. I like for people to wonder and guess. It's a game for me. So needless to say it's amusing.

But for some people it's not. It can be hurtful, embarassing, and a down right mood killer.

So like I asked has that situation ever happened to you?

Also sorry if wrong place, I wasn't sure where to ask.

It doesn't happen so often irl, but online I'm often confused for being a female. I find it somewhat amusing, though also tedious to correct. Apparently I give off a very feminine vibe, though in real life if you mistook me for a female everyone around you would think you were blind and deaf.

I had kind of a "baby face" as a kid; I was mistaken for a girl at least once. My nickname, "Paddy"--short for Padraic--probably didn't help.

Ain't nobody gonna mistake me for a girl now--not with my big ol' fluffy beard.

Since i was always shy and silent as a Kid, many Class mates always asked me, if i was a Boy or Girl.

Well they didnt asked me directly, i just heard them talk about it.

It was kinda cool, that no one had an Idea about me and that they wondered about me.

I felt a little Special.

Not anymore though, its pretty obvious that im a male now.

Back when I had long hair I was mistaken for a girl from time to time, the first one caught me off gaurd but from then on I half expected it. It was funny seeing how awkward people were when they realised they messed up

On the internet... It happens all the time. And when I cosplay... Yes, it does happen. I mean, I take it as a compliment if I cosplay as a male character and people think I'm a man??? Because that's what I was aiming for. I'd be shrugging it off if they said I looked "too feminine" for a male character but, that I DO look like a man as a man??? Good enough.

I've had weirder questions though. I've never been your typical girly girl. I like games, I like to hang out with guys and I do NOT like when men treat me like I'm some fragile sculpture just because I happen to be a girl. I can fight and I can be macho af even though I'm a lady. I'm a TOUGH LADY, ladies are not weak, etc.

Anyway, I've been told "You look the manliest out of the bunch" when I was standing with a group of other girls. That was one weird comment out of nowhere, hahah. No offense taken though, just odd.

And then there was this comment, when I was hanging with my boooiiis... And a new guy had just joined our little group of friends. When he noticed that I wasn't the stereotypical girl, he asked me... "I need to ask you something, while I can ask a girl. Because... You're a girl, right??". I... Just wha??? I just... I didn't dress sloppy that day, my hair was long and I don't have a very deep voice. He just questioned if I was a girl, because... I liked games and stuff? I DON't GET IT. Still no offense taken, but I just don't get the deal.

I'm genderfluid btw so I don't care either way.

I remember one time eight years ago I was at Walmart wanting to try something on and they had gendered changing room areas (I honestly have no clue why) and I ran into the lady working over there and she started asking me which gender I was. I was so shocked and confused. It has happened a lot since.

Exotic. I have noticeable masculine traits, like thin waist, broad shoulders and jaw. But also very slender body, and fairly long hair, which makes me look somehow androgynous.

I get yelled at by some women. But their pheromones can't lie to me.

Most people say I look like some kind of wood elf.

I don't remember a time when I've been mistaken for male IRL, but I have been assumed male several times on the Internet and in World of Warcraft, even though (or perhaps because) I only ever use female avatars.

Probably because most people assume gamers to be male. Some female characters are played by RL males for RP purposes, while others because they're hot and sexy and others because "why not". I've played female characters before. I won't be too surprised if some female characters were actually female, but because most RPGs are overwhelmingly male-demographic it's easy to jump into conclusions.

I dont believe that thinking you are another gender makes it true. Although if you want to change sex to look nice and all then i say go for it. But you should be polite and play along i think, so that their feelings wont get hurt.

I've only experienced that problem online and over the phone. Apparently my voice sounds soft and people believe that I'm a girl because of it. I tend to just roll worry it since it doesn't really bother me because I am a feminine guy anyway.

Well with my hair bleach blonde in bangs & clean shaven, I tend to get call a lady by little kids & occasionally an adult. It doesn't bother me as there more are important things in life & the world to worry about.

I don't think I've ever been mistaken for a guy before. I remember being told once that I "texted like a dude" back in high school, just because I used to not use emotes that much. Looking back now, I find it rather silly, as gender isn't defined by how you type! :P

Nope, never been mistaken for a man. Cuz, you know, boobs. And I dress and wear my hair in a very feminine manner that leaves little to speculate about.

Absotootly! Before I came here (to MLP forums) I used to frequent Equestria Forums, and I didn't tell my gender on my profile. I wanted my posts to speak for themselves without gender coming into it. So for three years most of the people there thought I was a guy. So it's true, typing style clearly has no bearing!

Having short hair has brought me many a children calling me a he.  Wearing pants almost all the time when you go out also adds to that.

Combination of being very feminine in the way I act and how I dress has earned me many 'Huh?' looks from others because not making it easy to see which gender I am, even more intense on the last months as I just gave free rein to my feminity because I don't longer have to handicap myself around my parents.

granted, i'm trans and i' chasing being of the other gender, but come on, it's still a legitimate answer

Only happened once when I was in high school when I had hair down to my shoulders and the guy only saw me from behind. Now I prefer to have my head shaved. XD

"I could have been happy above if I'd never donned the copper carapace and dipped my head beneath the waves to hear the muddled man-made sounds. Distorted and dreamlike droning. The whir and thrashing of a distant propeller, the tumultuous thundering thud of fogbound freighters. Mud underfoot, no sights, except the grasp of a diver's trained hand, dreaming of distant lands knowing all the while this is what I love, not the blue skies and wondering faces above. Canvas, rubber, brass, copper, and glass. Leather and lead, mud and sweat, heaving around in dark, damp depths seldom seen by most yet talked about by all. As if a sunny, happy place where mermaids and seahorses play and chests of gold are lain bare, untarnished by salt and time for all to grasp who are bold enough to go below..." -"Deep Sea Diver", Steven L.
