how i got into mlp: It started as a joke at school, I decided to actually watch it for real, and as everypony knows you can't just watch for a little bit

1.      What caught your attention about “My little Pony Show”?

The astonishing amount of people who'd set their profile picture or usernames to pony related things. At first I thought it was some sort of new trollish meme, but as years went by and I realized it was not, I decided to check out the show myself.

2.      What does it mean to you to be a member of a community surrounded by controversy?

Pretty much everything is surrounded by controversy these days. Being a brony is no different from being a member or any other fandom or community. 

3.      Do you consider yourself “obsessed” with MLP?

Maybe in my early days as a brony, but not anymore

4.      How often do you find yourself thinking about the show?

Not much.

5.      How often do you discuss MLP with family, friends and peers?

It depends on whether or not they know I like it and if they share my interest in it. If they do, we'd talk about it pretty often.

7.      What is something that you really enjoy about the community?

Its cheerfulness. Bronies have been the kindest community I've met so far, very warm and welcoming. I suppose it's hard to judge and scold others when you're an adult fan of pastel colored little ponies. Not to mention the metric ton of well made fan content.

8.      What are some of the largest Brony communities in the U.S?

I'm not from the US, I wouldn't know

9.      What is something you really dislike about the community/.

The stereotypes surrounding it. You can't mention bronies without people submerging you in pictures of a fat guy in a fedora.

10.   Do you go to MLP conventions?

No, the majority of them are far away from where I leave and I can't afford to go.

11.   What are some of the reasons you enjoy MLP?

It touches on topics that are relevant on functioning adult members of society and manages to be cheerful and colorful enough to be enjoyed by a child, but not too childish to bore an adult.

12.   Have you ever considered leaving the MLP community in the future?

I had, but I always come back for one reason or another.

13.   You being part of the MLP community is a secret to your family, peers and friends?

Yes

14.   If so, why?

People can be quick to jump to conclusion, therefore I try not to tell people until I know they can understand why I really enjoy the show. A few friends I've told, though, started watching the show afterwards and became fan themselves.

15.   How many hours a day do you dedicate to the show?

Not many

16.   How much money do you think you’ve spent in MLP merchandise?

I have never bought any merch. The closest thing I have is a small Twilight plushie a friend of mine got me as a gift after I told her about MLP.

I currently have no significant other.

The fandom surrounding it and I wanted to see what it was all about.

I'm not bothered by it and I understand that it is controversial, since it all seems so strange and different.

Sometimes when I'm walking to school and ponder about the show.

I only know one other fan of the show and he's my brother and we don't discuss it much. I don't mention it to really anyone, since don't know how they will react to me being a fan of this show.

When I was about 13 or so when my mom mentioned that  a brony got fired. It was years until I actually watched the show.

7.      What is something that you really enjoy about the community?

People don't tend to be as aggressive or toxic as many other communities that I have been  in. 

8.      What are some of the largest Brony communities in the U.S?

I'm not from the U.S.

9.      What is something you really dislike about the community/.

When people shove the fandom in people's faces, which can give the fandom a bad reputation.

10.   Do you go to MLP conventions?

I never have and likely never will.

11.   What are some of the reasons you enjoy MLP?

It's a nice break from other TV shows and movies, since it is much more innocent and bright.

12.   Have you ever considered leaving the MLP community in the future?

Maybe if the show ended, but I don't think that will happen for at least a couple of years.

Only 3 people know about it that I know in person and they are all family.

Some people in the fandom give it a bad image, so if people know that I'm a brony, they may think I'm like those people or think that there is something wrong with me, since it's a show targeted at little girls.

15.   How many hours a day do you dedicate to the show?

I don't watch it on a regular basis, so it took more than half a year just to catch up to the present episodes.

16.   How much money do you think you’ve spent in MLP merchandise?

I don't have any MLP merchandise at all, so $0.

I'm single, so no.

I took interest in it in the summer of 2015 and started watching the show on April of 2016.

It's a fun, funny show, and is endlessly entertaining to watch. Every aspect of the creation process, from the writing, voice acting, music, and animation, are all done with the same goodhearted, genuine, sincerity of the show itself. The voice actors are amazing at bringing emotion and personality to their lines, and the animators in turn can bring every inflection to life.   

12.   Have you ever considered leaving the MLP community in the future?

sure, maybe after the movie

1. What caught your attention about “My little Pony Show”?

Its growing popularity. I hadn't heard of it for months even after the community had been established. However in its heyday I spent a lot of time on DeviantArt and started to notice the growing pony art. There was always 1-3 pony pictures on the most popular page for months so I started to wonder that the fuss was about and watched it.

2. What does it mean to you to be a member of a community surrounded by controversy?

I never cared what other people thought, still don't. I am not going to let them ruin something I vastly enjoy. 

3. Do you consider yourself “obsessed” with MLP?

Not at all. I do a lot outside of this fandom and hardly own anything pony related. To me it's just one of my many fandoms but doesn't seem be ahead by any means.

4. How often do you find yourself thinking about the show?

When there are new episodes I looks forward to it. Other then that not unless me and my brony friends are talking about our OCs which we make jokes about from time to time.

Every once and a while. I know a lot of bronies in real life. Our OCs where made as a group and sometimes we enjoy discussing them.

18 I believe? It was my freshman year in college.

I believe for the most part it's rather accepting as well as talented.

2-Meh. I've been like a black sheep in my former environment. I stand-up for things others find stupid, and prefer to waste time attempting to lead a hedonistic lifestyle by ruining others. A bunch of random dudes insulting like third graders ain't a thing compared for what I had to deal with :dry:, in fact, most of them are easy to troll-back 

3-I guess so. Well, there's not a day pass by without thinking about ponies at least once, but I won't go out of my way to buy every single merchandise I see  . Plus I LOVE making voice actor jokes

4-see above 

5-Not much, and I have a very thin group which I discuss ponies for a short time

7-The art, the fics (though I haven't read any lately), and they are normally a very healthy bunch of people (unlike sports fans XD)

8-I dunno

9- How they make you choke you on shipping or headcanon in general and scrub  you to accept they are official canon :dry:. Also, rants towards the franchise are usually blown out of proportion

11- I think I've stuck with it because..... I dunno what I saw, but it made me care for it. I saw something I've missed for years: joy, happiness, hope, goodness. Plus I've used those to change for the better, like working out

What caught your attention about “My little Pony Show”?

It was Lauren Faust's artwork at first, but I really started enjoying the characters designs and personality in the first season. I HATE girly things, but MLP never struck me as girly when I started enjoying it. I was quite hesitant at first though.

2.      What does it mean to you to be a member of a community surrounded by controversy?

Controversy? I never really considered it that at all. It just became a normal thing for me and the people around me. Just like guys would watch the Powerpuff Girls when it first came out because it was a great cartoon. The irony being that it appeared girly to anyone who had no idea what it was. When I was growing up, it was just a bizarre thing that teens and older where watching cartoons in the first place, but that it pretty much my life now. 

3.      Do you consider yourself “obsessed” with MLP?

Yes, but just the same as Pokemon and various other franchises I love. It has ebbed away a little during the current hiatus and the lack of conventions and constant meet ups here in the UK this year has also had a huge effect on my obsessiveness too.  

4.      How often do you find yourself thinking about the show?

I get commissioned to draw MLP fanart and OCs a lot, I also sing (currently working on a few MLP song covers), MLP is a regular everyday thing for me and my partner. Our house is littered with merch too, so you can't avoid it. 

5.      How often do you discuss MLP with family, friends and peers?

Pretty much all the time, my sister is into it too, so we talk often and tend to gift merch to each other. My partner and I actually met because of the brony fandom, we started collaborating musically doing song covers or pony themed songs and then got together after a brony convention. It also comes up at work, but only because my colleagues question me on the conventions I attend and what I draw.   

6.      At what age did you found out about the show?

Oh yikes, it was 2011, so I was 20. Of course I knew about the original series, but hated that stuff growing up. 

7.      What is something that you really enjoy about the community?

The creativity. It's insane how big the creative community is of bronies. I've gained a lot of confidence and recognition from it, from my artwork and also at times my singing. I sell at cons as an artist, but its when I get recognised for my singing that I feel really happy. Music is such a big part of the fandom, but a very difficult part to make your mark with. 

8.      What are some of the largest Brony communities in the U.S?

I don't know. I'm in the UK. 

9.      What is something you really dislike about the community.

It's become really difficult to get noticed as a creative member. Music especially. Unless you are someone like EllieMonty or BlackGryphon, you're a nobody. The other big problem is that 90% of bronies only listen to dub step/electronic music. My partner and I dabble with alt rock, but not many people seem to enjoy it as much. If you don't have some "wubs" in your song, you're nothing is what it feels like. It really gets my partner down and kills his musical confidence. He really is quite talented and it breaks my heart to see him just give up when no one listens to his work. 

10.   Do you go to MLP conventions?

I've yet to afford to go out of the country, but I have been to every UK convention at least once. BUCK being the biggest one, but sadly it has ended for good. UK Ponycon is the next big one, but its also having a tough time, mostly adapting for bronies as it originally is more of a collectors fair than a convention, but they are branching out and evolving to make it more fun and convention like for us. 

11.   What are some of the reasons you enjoy MLP?

Apart from the community, it's a very well written and directed cartoon (except the last season, dropped a bit in the writing in my opinion). I love the animation style and the attention to detail, which is how the love for background ponies came about. The best part in recent years has been how much fan service DHX have started putting into the show. Episode 100 being the obvious one. The staff behind it really do love the fans. 

12.   Have you ever considered leaving the MLP community in the future?

Recently we've started to settle down about MLP, but we won't stop watching it. We've started drifting out of being in the centre of the community socially to just enjoy our offline home life, but the love for MLP won't go away. Its the same with pokemon, there have been times where I've just lost interest for a short time, but I always come back to it.

Not at all. I'm quite proud of it because its made me a happier person. I've had the rough times with the fandom, but my current outcome is great. I don't hide it at all.

I don't dedicate, I live it. If I can sneak ponies in my day, I will. I have two figures on my desk at work for goodness sake. I don't watch the show or movies every single day though. Just when I feel like it. If anything, I end up having an MLP song on once day.

Ha ha! Waaaay too much. I said earlier, our house is full of MLP merch. From fridge magnets in the kitchen to blankets and cushions in the living room, to a whole room full of them in the studio, they're everywhere. I can't even guess how much I've spent. 

17.   Does your significant other shares your passion for MLP show and the community?

I've mentioned him a few times already, but yes he does. It's how we met, it's part of our creative outlets and it's part of our everyday life. He's not so obsessed as I am, but the usual question when out and we see anything MLP is "where is Applejack?", because Hasbro's merch and advertising seem to really hate her, ha ha.

Well I started watching the show when Season 1 was new, episode 9 had just been released when I started watching, so that was 2010/2011, but I did not really start getting involved in the brony community until about 2013/2014. I've been a part of it ever since.

I was not hooked until I got to episode 9/10. So I started watching it every week from there. I then got into the active brony community after a "Pony Day" at my local comic shop, where I met other fans of the show.

1. What caught your attention about "My Little Pony" show? Rainbow Dash. Yup, after watching a Rainbow Dash epsiode a few years back (I think it was "The Mysterious Mare Do Well") I was hooked, mostly because I loved RD's personality and really everything about her. After a while I got even more interested in the show and other ponies, and that's when I decided, "I freakin' love this show!!!" 

2. What does it mean to you to be a member of a community surrounded by controversy?  I don't really think there's too much controversy, if there is it doesn't bother me too much, couldn't be prouder to be a part of this fandom.

Initially, nothing did. I had to be introduced to the series before I could say I took an interest in it.

The characters are likable and not just cardboard cutouts. They have their own unique personalities, and this leads to a very diverse set of characters that a lot of cartoons seem to lack. The antics are zany and the lore is also well crafted.

Not really. If I ever leave, it will be because G5 is not as good as G4. That would be a sad day.

What caught your attention about “My little Pony Show”?

I was aware of the show before airing since I follow animation news and heard Lauren Faust was developing a reboot of My Little Pony. I didn't take a look at the show until early in 2011 after seeing surge of pony themed avatars and memes on the internet, coupled with my brother-in-law stating that the show was decent and to try it. I did and it didn't take. A few years later in 2014, my kids asked me to give the series another chance, so I did. It took that time. 

What does it mean to you to be a member of a community surrounded by controversy?

I don't consider anything about the show or community to be socially controversial, helped in part by a larger awareness of the world, the growing political unrest, and perspective. 

 

Do you consider yourself “obsessed” with MLP?

No

 

How often do you find yourself thinking about the show?

Not counting active participation on forums like this, once a day maybe. Some days not at all.

Once a week, usually after seeing the new episode with the kids who are now 16 years old.

It has a tendency to explode over the silliest of issues, both related to the show, and related to the fandom itself. As a fan of other media properties like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, ect ... this is not something I am unfamiliar with, yet it annoys me in all fandom communities. 

 

Do you go to MLP conventions?

Yes. I have been to two in my time (2015 and 2016), and will likely go to them in the future.

 

What are some of the reasons you enjoy MLP?

Creative animation considering the limitations of the platform that the showrunners have selected. I am enamored by narratives that are deceptively simple yet -- narratives that are digestible yet invite the viewer to collaboratively complete the narrative internally. The voice acting is well done, and the characters and scenes are simply adorable and meaningful. 

 

Have you ever considered leaving the MLP community in the future?

The fandom? No. Communities within the fandom? Yes.

Not including travel costs to venues that I have happened to buy merch, the fact that I bought MLP stuff for the kids before I became a fan, about six grand. If you factoring in Con costs, that jumps significantly. 

 

Does your significant other shares your passion for MLP show and the community?

Complicated answer coming your way. My late wife was approving of my interest in the show and the community. She encouraged it. Her personal view evolved over the course of two and a half years. She maintained that she appreciated the show, then enjoyed it, then admitted that she was a fan of it. She appreciated the community to a greater degree though, eventually participating in it with me and hoping to cultivate a budding friendship with my closest friend in the community. 

 

How long have you been part of the community?
