Actually they're quotes from a old TV sit-com, so I can't answer that for myself.

Anyway was like a catch phrase of one of the characters, the boss of the company, if when presented with some idea that he thought was stupid would typically say "I didn't get where I am today" (being the boss) "by " .. whatever.

The TV show was The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin
