general Keeping Christmas Out Of November

Denim&Venöm

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year. Leaves are falling. Skies are cloudy. Temperature is dropping. Halloween candy is on sale. And the shelves of just about every major retailer are lined with Christmas themed products.

Seems like the day after all hallows eve or even a few days before, trees, wreaths, candy canes, lights, decorations, tree and lawn ornaments and wrapping paper are brought out in full force.  Some houses already start putting up the lights and inflatables, and some places and stations even start playing that infernal "music." And it progressively all gets worse as the weeks go on.

It's kinda like this.

Or this

So is anypony else on here tired of having the winter solstice holiday season be extended over a month early? Does every store heaping it's holiday merchandise front and center, every pop radio station blaring holiday hits and neighbors decorating their yards in festive decorum end up diluting the holiday experience and take away any meaning the month of November has?

Is it time that everyone just, pardon the pun, chill out on the Christmas cheer? And how would you celebrate November as a distinctive month (outside of thanksgiving)?

I'm all for the Winter Solstice holiday being all over the place as fast as it can, because Winter is my favorite season.

What I'm *really* tired of is summer weather extending into November. It happened last year, and guess what? It's happening again today, even though we've already had two nights of hard freezes (which is very different from last year, where the temperature had never dropped below like 50F at all)

But I know that's not what your topic is about at all, I just went on my little rant. In the end, I think people complain too much about Christmas decorations and stuff coming up early. The ONLY case where it annoys me is how "Black Friday" now happens on Thanksgiving. That is problematic.

I just need to point out that Christmas is far from the only time that this happens. Does no one pay attention the rest of the year? Like how Christmas candy is being taken down the week before Christmas and Valentine's candy is being put out? Like how the instant New Years Day is here, the stores have cleared out all of the winter wear and are putting out bikinis?

If a cold front comes through in January and you need a coat and don't already have one, you're big time out of luck. You were supposed to shop in August and September for your winter wear. That's a much worse thing that stores do than putting up Christmas stuff early.

By the time January hits the stores are acting full-force as if it is Spring. That is much, much more absurd than putting up Christmas decorations in November. Just saying.

Well because Halloween isn't really a thing in Australia Christmas stuff started to appear in stores as early as late September. So yes retail giants like Target and Big-W put Christmas stuff on shelves as early as late September to try and beat the competition of sales with smaller retailers. It's something that's been happening for years now and I find it quite strange how people would want to buy Christmas stuff as early as late September. :)

Theres a reason companies and radios do this.

M. O. N. E. Y.

Putting out Christmas decorations a month early increases any profit a store is going to make.  Christmas sales are money makers. And money is the little green bill that makes the world go round and round.

You know why it happens? Because people buy it. If people didn’t buy the products they put out early, they wouldn’t put them out early.

I work in retail, and sure enough, you’ll get people that complain about the early Christmas decorations AS THEY ARE FILLING THEIR CARTS WITH THEM.

The only thing that bothers me about companies and advertisements cramming christmas at us as fast as they possibly can is the fact that as a non-christmas celebrating person there is absolutely ZERO coverage of other major winter festivities. Where's the Hanukah decorations??? I think the fact Christmas is used as a money making thing instead of people following their beliefs in a traditional way (I don't know how to word this aha I think I mean in a commercialised way) that it takes the point out of it...

On the other hand though, I think the earlier we spread the message of friendship and kindness (which is what it's all about really) then there's no issue... but it would be nice to walk out the house and not get tinsel in my eyes :okiedokieloki:

Halloween was pretty non existent for me this year. And well my Brother is already getting the xmas hype started. Honestly its already winter here. As soon as the clocks went back, we had the first cold day of the year and its been bloody cold since. Today is a freezing fog/mist. Winter is here!

tbh Ive started looking forward to Christmas more the last 2 years, I think its because i have a house, near family and have a serious partner to share it with.

When Halloween is over, what else are stores going to put in their seasonal department? Other than the overindulgence of food, Thanksgiving isn't a materialistic holiday, and it doesn't really call for any yard decorations. I see nothing wrong with stores doing this, and I'm saying this as a person who loves Thanksgiving more than Halloween and Christmas combined.

personally believe in waiting until after Thanksgiving Day to put up Christmas decorations in and around my house, if at all, but I couldn't give a rat's behind if neighbors decorate early. It's their property. I wouldn't say it dilutes the holiday experience for me, because I experience holidays through action, opposed to environment.

Radio stations do need to cut it out, though. There's nothing more annoying than a station that denies listeners the usual music 2-4 months out of the year.

This is the funny truth to almost everything people complain about. Everyone bitches about Reality TV since the early 2000's ... gets high ratings. It's popular to complain about COD, Transformers, Madden, Wal-Mart, yet they all make crazy money.

The various explanations behind this often lead to a conclusion that people like hollow bitching, they lack the courage of their convictions, or the majority simply nods in acknowledgment as they think to themselves, "I'm not going to disagree with this person. If they are going all self-righteous over something insignificant ... I'm not painting a target for them on me." Seriously you complainers on here ... you would be shocked how often people are feeding you bullshit and judging your ass because they don't want to deal with it. The facial tells when this happens is so obvious to me, the only thing that is more amusing is the fact that the complainer is oblivious to it since their are caught up in their own self-important rant.

Seeing christmas decor earlier has been a increasing trend since I can remember. It certainly isn't anything new. I have no issues with seeing holiday decorations off-season. I honestly have more important things to worry about.

This is actually a very fair complaint since it involves an opportunity cost. I'll have to agree with you here.

I don't know, some of these shoppers may be realizing that if they don't suck it up and purchase their Christmas decorations early, there might not be anything good left for them when the season actually rolls around.

For example, I had seen pink Christmas lights around a couple of Christmas seasons around, but every attempt to find them in stores that season turned up nothing. Last year, I had to make sure I made it to the store in October to make sure I would get some.

Want to see them and why I had to have them? =P

So, in fact, it is a begrudging purchase, not so much hypocrisy. If you don't get these now, they won't be around during the actual season when you're supposed to buy them. That's the problem.

@Denim&Venom

I already put this video up in another topic that more people should see. It gives great insight into why it's this way.

Please I would greatly appreciate if people could tell me why they agree or disagree with this guy's conclusions.  You don't have to agree. I just want to see if the answer to the question is getting through.

It is just a corporate celebration of making a shitload of money. They put out the Christmas stuff early, people rush to get everything as soon as possible, and the corporations make all sorts of profits as people fall in line. If corporations had their way, they would be advertising Christmas stuff in July.

Well at least my family always celebrates Thanksgiving. Only AFTER that are we allowed to get stressed out about the holidays, which is actually better than how the media cynically portrays the so-called fools.

Seriously, watch that video I put on above. It should give really good reasons why this happens.

My Christmas Wish this year is that people have a better understanding about things like this and not get so angry all the time. Just some acknowledgement would be nice.

Already had an idea on the corporate side of things, but the whole nostalgia kick is a new way of looking at it.

His advice at the end is nice and inspiring, but not really applicable. Not gonna tell the retailers to ship back those holiday goodies because everyone's developed insightful moral fiber.

It also doesn't change the fact that the holiday season still looses it's magic when being paraded around an extra month.

Sometimes less is more.

I'm just glad someone at least see my and the NC's point about why this is (nostalgia kick). so while I strongly disagree with the topic title Keeping Christmas out of November, I won't hate you for that.

Your reaction, @Denim&Venom?

*shrugs* If it makes you happy practically celebrating Christmas in November, more power to you.

It just kills my mood for the yule tide season, putting up with it for so long.  That and it takes away from the unique feel of November and it's holidays, as lower tier as they may be.
