What is your favorite YouTube subculture?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

What are your favorite subcultures on YouTube?

Examples include paramotoring (Tucker Gott), skateboarding (AndrewShrock), modified cars (ThatDudeinBlue), political/societal commentaries/critiques (Sargon of Akkad), etc.

It's hard to pin-point, really. Looking back on my subscriptions, the overall theme seems to be entertainment (Terrible Writing Advice, CuteFuzzyWeasel, Shit Flick Critic, SomeOrdinaryGamers, etc.). Those aren't all of my subscriptions, of course, but those are the ones I watch the most.

I like racing a lot so failrace, super gt, nicki thiim, and jimmy broadbent.

I also enjoy art so I usually just watch draw with jazza.

For retro stuff and sometimes modern pc stuff I like lgr and for modern pc reviews and speculation adoredtv.

Last one I'll mention is quill18 for strategy and rts games.

1st obviously is My Little Pony related things and going deeper than that is SFM animations and music (1-EDM, 2-Punk)

2nd would be Political/Societal commentary. I watch a lot of DarkMatter, TJ Kirk, ShoeOnHead(or however you spell it). I of course don’t agree with everything they say I just like hearing their nuance perspective.

3rd Does YTP count? Cuz if so YTP

4th Gaming. I’m subscribed to some gamers.

I really love Nigahiga and Wong Fu Productions. (Nigahiga being my favorite YouTuber) idk where they would lie as I don’t feel they are specific enough to be a subculture but idk.

Political/Social commentary. Shitposting/trolling. Memes. Gaming.

Though it kinda falls into gaming, there's a section of strictly Dota 2 content I really enjoy. PurgeGamers probably being my favorite because he makes really informative videos that noobs, skilled players, and ones wanting to improve their skills can really enjoy,

I used to be deep into the Minecraft YouTube subculture. Never actually made videos, but I was a big fan of a bunch of Minecraft YouTubers.

I am still a fan of Let's Plays in general, having followed a bunch of those YouTubers (especially those who focus on Nintendo, racing games, and indie games) since my early teens.

I love my MLP analysis, speed art, PMVs, audio dramas, short animations, and reviews.

I love YouTubers who analyze and review other non-pony animation (both Western and Japanese).

And finally, I watch various political and social commentary YouTubers, including some controversial ones like Stefan Molyneux, Blaire White, Paul Joseph Watson, and Riley J. Dennis whom I don't necessarily agree with on multiple issues but I still admire. And as a staunch libertarian, I watch every Ron Paul Liberty Report video. :please:

Then animation of course and some music.

OH yeah, I also enjoy top 10 list type vids and the creepy ghost related videos. Channels like Top 5s covers.

YouTube Poop. Even with some of them getting to be special snowflakes that I refuse to watch anymore (Pie Pivotmontier, EmpLemon), there'sa still a lot of good stuff being churned out once in a while. Sure they've really been taking their time lately, but it usually ends up worth the wait. Content makers like cs188 and Numberer1 really make this genre as great as it is, even 10 years after it became a thing. Most videos still make me laugh so hard I end up barely being able to breathe.

2nd, 3rd, and 4th- Countdown Makers (Most particularly Fawful's Minion and rabbidluigi. Don't really keep up with others), Poketubers (I actually watch a lot of Free For Alls and videos from people like Truegreen7 once in a while), and Paladins Youtubers (I could probably count them on one hand, though). I also watch a lot of content from League YouTubers such as SoloRenektonOnly and Tobias Fate, and I am very fond of Brawlbrstms3's extension and remixing of video game OST scores. I occasionally watch smexuals as well.

I'll add a twist here: LEAST favorite: SKEPTICS. A subgenre full of utter alt-right garbage including people like the Armoured Skeptic. I've really began to dislike YouTube's political channels (even ones I used to watch), and this subgenre is the epitome of why. It's become completely biased BS with no real substance aside from bashing on people they don't like for whatever dumb reason. I'd have an easier time watching PragerU than most of this, and that's saying something because Mr. Prager is one of the political BS tossers I hate the most.Hey videos from skeptics are still far more palatable than Fox News, so I'll have to give skeptics that. At least it doesn't feel like my brain is melting quite that fast.

I have taken a liking to the various amateur critics that have cropped of around YouTube over the years, who often perform their critical analysis at least part for comedy.  Some of the more famous ones are:

Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw:  Zero Punctuation

Noah Antwiler:  Spoony Experiment (now defunct)

Red Letter Media:  Home of the Plinkett Reviewers

SfDebris:  A  must for Star Trek fans.

Nostalgia Critic

These sites tend to be both entertaining and informative.  I have probably spent way too many hours watching the various reviews they perform.

Tons of Pro-wrestling channels.

  • WrestleTalk news. First thing I'll watch when I come home. As obvious by the name, they do news n wrestling, covering the latest breaking gossip, recaps of shows that are more entertaining than the shows themselves and a few light comedy skits.
  • Whatculture Wrestling. Bigger production budget, usually displaying Top 10 lists, as well as articles and breaking news set to well edited slide shows.
  • Cultaholic. Pretty much the same as Whatculture, considering they're all ex-staff. More reactions and comedy skits.
  • Wrestling With Wregret. former manager turned personality Bryan Zayne does weakly reviews of shows as well as top 8 lists and reviews/retrospectives of old shows and topics.
  • Octopus stretch. Talks about the comings and goings of the burgeoning Japanese wrestling scene as it makes it's way west, as well as Top 5 discussions, analysis and critiques on current and past events in the world of Japanese wrestling.
  • WrestleLamia. Also does top 10 lists as well as mini-documentaries and 'where are they now?' segments.
  • RasslinN'Rantin. Recap, news and analysis as well as opinion pieces and discussion on various indy feds across the world.
  • DaveKnowsWrestling. Dave goes into the history of various companies, individuals, teams, wrestling families and even entire styles of wrestling.
  • Showbuckle and RealNeatPuro. Both do the same thing, and that's make mini-documentaries and long from essays on the intricacies of Japanese wrestling and it's growing market in the west.
  • Being The Elite. A backstage look into the lives of Pro-wrestling's most popular faction today, The Bullet Club, specifically the Elite: Matt and Nick Jackson, Kenny Omega, Marty Scurll, Adam Page, Cody Rhodes and more, as drama, comedy, insanity and C&D letters follow their every move.
  • As well as all the official channels for various feds around the world.
  • And finally, the one that started ti all for me, The Wrestling Round-table. A channel that delved into critical thinking and mature discussion on the subject of wrestling.

For "subcultures", there's several I enjoy. One of them being YouTube Poop if that counts. I've been into it on and off for about a decade now, and the quality seems to have improved over time since I've first watched gotten into it.

There's also reviewers/critics of various genres, most notably animation and especially MLP episodes.

Some others I can think of are let's players, countdowns, and songs/music videos.

I really like the channels that feature fixing up old electronics! Mostly computers, though. There are a couple I like especially, like the 8-bit-guy, LGR (Lazy Game Reviews), and this one's virus testing, but I like Danooct1's videos, too.

Sometimes I watch movie reviews from Saberspark or Mr. Enter, but I especially like the Fandom Files series that the RPG Monger does.

Edit; I forgot the Game Grumps how could I forget the Game Grumps
