Spike needs a father figure

I've been thinking on why Spike is so accepting and sometimes whimpy at certain times and tends to be too kind without standing up for himself at certain times, and why he hangs out with the girls most of the time - Twilight's the closest thing he has to a mom, but who's his dad? Has he ever had a fatherly figure? I'm sure he's hung with Twilight's family when he was a kid and I was thinking that Shining Armor coulda taught him O&O, but that's more of a brotherly figure than fatherly.

Now Sludge wasn't necessarily a positive role model for Spike, that's for sure, but who's to say the closest thing he'll have to a father is a dragon or even a pony? I would like to think that when Scorpan finally comes on the show, HE could be Spike's father figure! A dragon with a pony mom and a gargoyle dad, who woulda thought? XD Every kid needs a father figure AND a mother figure. Even homosexual couples need an opposite sex role model for their kids, cause that's why there are Moms and Dads. They don't have to be husband and wife necessarily, but for the kid's sake, both gender role models is healthy for a child's growth. And Spike has a feminine personality mostly from hanging with girls for so long, and only hanging with guys once every week or so.

I can't think of anyone else other than Scorpan that can fill the job. If he shows up next season, let's hope he becomes Spike's fatherly figure. It could really help him! What do you think of this?

I think for now Smolder is the father figure Spike needed. They say while Mothers care and nurture you, Fathers tend to teach their child about the world and their society. And Smolder fits the bill, teaching Spike about the Molt to using his wings. Plus she was the one to help Spike realize Sludge was a fraud.

Spike needs a father figure. The show needs a father figure. The whole freaking H-Bro needs a father figure.

They do! Josh Haber, MA Larson, Mike Vogel, Nick Confalone, take your pick! ;)

I think maybe Big Mac could be a fatherly figure to Spike in some ways. Doncha think?

He seems more like a brother to Spike, but a father to Apple Bloom!

Well, we've never really seen him around Night Light who, if we view Twilight as an adoptive sister, would in turn be akin to an adoptive father.

no,  don't think he does. The show itself has made this clear in two separate occasions. He's content with having the ponies as his fam.

This has nothing to do with species. It's about having a MALE role model, cause other than Big Mac and Discord, and on a rare occasion Thorax, how many guys is he close with? Big Mac is pretty much equal to Spike, Discord's not much of a role model, and Spike is pretty much Thorax's role model!

That's why it says FATHER FIGURE, just like Twilight is his mother figure. Spike doesn't need help on what species he is - he needs help on his self esteem as an indivdual, and that's what the dad is for!

again, I really don't think he does. What can a father figure teach Spike that the ponies haven't already?

Ahem...

Be a man! We must be swift as the coursing river! Be a man! With all the force of a great typhoon! Be a man! With all the strength of a raging fire! Mysterious as the dark side of the mooooooooooon!

Iunno if that answered your question. Basically what I'm saying is, he's too soft and sensitive - letting himself be pushed around (like Twilight using him as bait even though he didn't want to, or the ponies putting him on the crowd in Horse Play). And Twilight's so busy on focusing on her own destiny with Spike constantly helping her out, that neither of them are thinking of Spike's future, or what he wants.

Twilight taught him how to be kind and smart and to be a good friend, but she never taught him how to be more confident and tough. Not dragon tough though, but more thick. Spike has a hard time understanding himself and he just chooses to ignore it and just go on with his life catering to his friends without caring what happens to himself.

That's why he needs a dad. A gargoyle dad! :D

First of all, being soft is not weakness. Did you ever stop to consider that Spike is content with his life right now and that is what HE wants right now? I mentioned elsewhere that no one has the right to demand the characters needs this or that to be happy. If Spike is happy with his life, then we should be happy for him instead of DEMANDING his life get better. It's HIS life, and no one, not even you, have the right to say that he needs something like a father figure to be happy.

Did you not read my post earlier?

In my eyes, Smolder already fills the hole you think Spike "needs" to fill.

Be less demanding of what you think characters need to be happy, and be happy that the character is happy right now.

'Need' is a strong word, in my opinion, regarding this issue.

Sure, Spike could benefit from a character who would help him improve his confidence and choose a path to follow for himself. But I don't think it is something he cannot do at his own pace with the friends and family he already has.

I think spending more time with friends like Rainbow Dash, Ember and/or Smolder could help him raise his confidence without someone explicitly teaching him to be more confident.

We also have to consider that Spike is still a kid, and that dragons have longer lifespans than most creatures. Spike's development could well be completely normal and his time to grow confidence, firmness and ambition towards a personal goal could come years after his molting.

And once again, friend, I wasn't DEMANDING! It's just that every child needs both a mom and a dad role model, even if they're not in love, it's not a homophobic thing. It's just what the child needs. Spike's only content with his life cause every time he wants something, it backfires on him. It's a safezone for him. And Twilight's focusing so much on her own goals that neither of them are focusing on his. He needs someone that thinks of his benefits more. Twilight was a kid when she started being a mom! Obi-Wan was young when he started training Anakin, and look what that brouht him! When Spike gets older, he could suddenly snap at this rate! How much longer will Spike be an assistant for until he realizes he's suited for bigger things?

When is he gonna use Twilight as bait to get back at her? :P

Once again, friend. You ignore what I was trying to say.

You don't need both parents to live a happy life. Look at some of the Disney Characters. They only had one parent and they lived happy, exciting lives.

And you think Spike will end up like Anakin Skywalker? Well, if that's not jumping to conclusions about a character whose life and happiness you DON'T have the right to control, then I don't know what is.

If you are too stubborn to acknowledge my point that no one should be controlling what a character needs to be happy, then I have nothing more to say to you.

Please, relax brah. It's just a theory. Why do you take this way too personally? It's just a show lol!

We don't have to talk about this anymore. We talk about something else in PM! ;)
